sonic the hedgehog (which im surprised no one has done yet) and the old NES game monster party. all the old games always make the best speed runs in my opinion, and those were two of my favorites

I've got Sonic 1 (and 2, 3, & S&K) for the Genesis and have tried to do a SS speedrun, though I think I might just try to do individual level speed runs if anybody else is interested.  Then maybe later a full game speed run and a 100% (all 6 chaos emeralds) run...

I dont know who should do this. But i want to see a Sonic 1 AND sonic 2 run. Sonic 2 I like much more.
What do you think its a good time for sonic 1 and sonic 2?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I just watched a tool-assisted Sonic 3 run.  Usually, I enjoy those about as much as I enjoy real speed runs, but in this case, the tool-assisted one was so absurd I just couldn't get into it.  I mean, with the Megaman Tool-assisted runs, for instance, I could at least PRETEND a human could do that (heck, the MM2 tool assist run fooled a bunch of my college friends... mostly because they ARE that good when it comes to games like Street Fighter and such, so they could believe someone else could get that good for MegaMan) but the Sonic one is just.... no.  It LOOKS fake, and thus boring.

I would -love- to see a real sonic run done.  One, two, or three.  It's a real race, and watching all the intricacies of the race would be fascinating.

I don't have a genesis though... Sad
Wasted, Not Worried!
Sonic PinBall, baby, yeah! Roll Eyes
nibble nibble nibble.
monster party was an awesome game; if I can get my NES up here I might try runnning it. And a sonic run would rock as well. maybe even the new games on the GameCube.
I am already planning on doing a sonic adventure/DX speedrun. I'll start as soon as i get all the level speedruns and a recording cable.

I already have Sonic 1 finished (individual level runs)...will do Sonic 2 and 3 at some point (few other games I'm doing at the moment).
I think by speedruns through sonic we mean go through all levels together, instead of going through them separately...
Pudding%
Radix would need to make a ruling on that...but I think it would be along the same lines as GoldenEye 007 where the whole game run would be a separate category from the individual level runs.

And in all honesty, I was going to do a single segment run on it but felt like being a perfectionist for a change  Tongue
what are your times for each level?

If you're doing individual runs for each level, then the times should be as close the perfection as possible. You should try to tie most of the soniccenter records since centiseconds aren't recorded in the game

Also, could I do this with sonic advance then? I'd like to do a single segment run through the game, but could I also post individual level times as well and if I did, would it be ok if the level's were in time attack mode instead of the "Start Game" mode?

Well, I can't compare to SonicCenter's times since the site seems to be down or something, but here's the times I have:

Green Hill Zone
Act 1 - 0:28
Act 2 - 0:24
Act 3 - 0:51

Marble Garden Zone
Act 1 - 1:07
Act 2 - 1:44
Act 3 - 1:45

Spring Yard Zone
Act 1 - 0:58
Act 2 - 0:44
Act 3 - 1:29

Labyrinth Zone
Act 1 - 0:59
Act 2 - 1:13
Act 3 - 1:40

Star Light Zone
Act 1 - 0:39
Act 2 - 0:33
Act 3 - 1:17

Scrap Brain Zone
Act 1 - 1:05
Act 2 - 1:09
Act 3 - 0:28

Final Zone - 1:14

I know a couple levels could use some polish (not a lot, just minute time savers) but overall they're all quite good (as near perfection as I could get at that time).

I also think I'm gonna do a single segment as well just for the hell of it.
Those times are fairly nice (better then the average player) but I'm not really sure if some of them are speedrun material.

Since you're doing each level individually with as many tries as you want, you should attempt to tie most of the records, or get fairly close to them (no more then 5 seconds off for the later levels)

Green Hill you should get 25 seconds in. some of the other levels look fine, but some are waaay off the record (I think one of them is off by a minute!)

I'm trying to find a list of the world record times from soniccenter so you can compare your times to it.

good luck with speedrunning this game! It's harder then you think!

Well, I would if I could access the site. Not sure if I have a bad link or what. Think you could toss a working one my way?

The 1 minute off one you refer to has to be either Marble 2/3 or Labyrinth 3 since no others are far enough from the 1 minute mark. And in all honesty I felt like I was missing some major shortcut in Marble 2, but couldn't find any trace of one, and was rather pissed at that level after the <insert number higher that 70 here>th attempt so I said screw it.

And when I say polish I mean a couple seconds here or there I saw that I could improve. Most levels were like that. I should also note that I decided to never take a hit as well, so I probably lost a little time in a couple places where it would've been faster to just take one (Scrap Brain 2 comes to mind).

ooh

not taking hits now?

Well like you said, taking hits can be extremly useful in all 3 marble zones.

ok well I got a small list of the first few levels (thanks to SprintGod)

EDIT: I got most of them now! This list is from november of last year though, so the times might be slightly improved.

Green Hill
Act 1 - 0:25
Act 2 - 0:18
Act 3 - 0:35

Marble
Act 1 - 0:54
Act 2 - 1:02
Act 3 - 1:19

Spring Yard
Act 1 - 0:23
Act 2 - 0:32
Act 3 - 1:05

Labyrinth
Act 1 - 0:48
Act 2 - 0:58
Act 3 - 1:28

Star Light
Act 1 - 0:26
Act 2 - 0:24
Act 3 - 1:00

Scrap Brain
Act 1 - x:xx
Act 2 - 0:46
Act 3 - 0:20

Final - 1:13

Wow...just wow...

If I had to guess...

Green Hill 1/2 are just better control over Sonic than I have, 3 is probably a faster route.

Marble Garden 1/3 is from taking hits, 2 has to be a shortcut I missed.

Spring Yard 2/3 is a mixture of better control and changed route, 1 is same as 2/3 with a shortcut I missed.

Labyrinth 1/2/3 is better control.

Star Light 1/2/3 is better control as well, and possibly a route change or two.

Scrap Brain 2 is a combo of better control (have I said this enough times  ;)) and taking hits, 3 is better control (I hate water). No time to compare to for 1 (should be at least in the ballpark)

Final is the only one I almost have, and there's really nothing I can do to it other than hit robotnik really fast on he 8th hit so he flys off sooner.

There wouldn't happen to be any vids up anywhere would there?
Another Sonic fan...
I see that some people are interested in speedrunning Sonic games. I always thought that the Sonic Series was created for speedruns  Grin

Actually i did a Sonic The Hedgehog 2 speedrun and created a topic about it. Hope you will come and help me (i still have a problem with the encoding, my video is too big)

See ya  Wink
well, soniccenter had vids, but it's down

I might be able to get a few though (by contacting the players)

That'd be real cool, thanks  8)

With how good these times are, though, I may just tape over the whole lot of my runs with a single segment run through the game. I doubt I have the patience to actually catch up to those times  Wink

Then again I might just redo a couple and add a single segment as well, since mine are no-hit.
Fucking Weeaboo
Most of the times listed beat me.  I DID get 0:19 on Scrap Brain 3 once.  But that takes total perfection and I've only gotten it once in my life.

And since I've gotten rusty on my gaming...fat chance that's happening again. -_-
So you're still going to go with the no hit run?

Because I'm sure you can explain in your "author's notes" that the hits were intentional. But if you really don't want to get hit once, then go with it

Most of those times developed over many years. That doesn't mean that the players literally played the levels for 4 years straight, but that over time, more and more techniques were discovered. Either way, a large amount of effort was put into those times by the players, and obviously i'm not expecting you to beat them, especially in just a single run through the whole game! But I'd say since green hill is the first zone, you may as well try and tie the records, or get as close as you possibly can to them! f you mess up, you can just restart the game without fearing much to lose, whereas if you did that in a later level, you'd lose a lot more!

If you could get 5 - 10 seconds max within most of those times, I'd say you've got yourself a really great speedrun. If not, then it would still be cool, but just ok.

Me thinks this is one of the reason's why there hasn't been a single segment run through a sonic game yet, because their really hard Tongue

Anyway, good luck, and I'm at school while I type this, so no vids right now >_>
Rock on, Earthbound. Rock on.
I would really like to see any Sonic 2 speedrun, preferably single-segment, with no preference between all emeralds or not.  What I think could be very interesting, however, would be Sonic 3 & Knuckles single-segment speedplays, with character divisions for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic & Tails simultaenous (preferably with honest second player Tails assisstance), again, either with all emeralds, or without.  It'd be great to see how much the routes and strategies would differ with each character's unique specialties, like Sonic's shield jumps, Tails flying and swimming, and Knuckles gliding, climbing, and unique routes.  My inner fanboy cries out...!
Veni, Vidi, Vici.
I'd like to see the website too. Never been there but loved the games. Wanna see the current record.
