Hey, it's been 3 days since I've last played Turok, I've had a terrible night attempting, in which I got stuck in the first 3 minutes of Port of Adia for 2 hours... I'm not 100% sure I totally understand the tip you gave me there Squeebles, but if the entrails don't try to hide at that point it sure looks like a good timesaver. I was thinking of using explosive shells to kill them so I could get one shot kills even from afar.
With all the details I was trying to convey, I'm not sure how to word it.. The first switch is forward from where you enter, and I forgot to mention that which probably messed up the order I was saying to do things.  Immediately after that switch you have enough time to run to the second switch while the enemy is following their scripted animation, and from there you can weave around the 4 melee enemies to hit the final switch.  If you fire a loud weapon like the shotgun after the last room is open and the endtrails can't see you while they're at the other end of the room they're programmed to come over to you which takes them 5 or 6 seconds but once they're away from the boxes the won't try to run.

I'll watch that part in speedruns and I guess I'll understand what you mean. I knew about the weapon sounds, that's why I fire the pistol before the first child.

I'm streaming right now if you want to see. http://www.twitch.tv/Bismuth9
Alright, I'll give it a watch for as long as I can ^u^

Alright, I'll get to learn Hive of the Mantids now, I feel like my 47:03 is pretty awesome and would be really hard to beat. Overall I think I could be able to do 45 high with a SUPERB run but it would really have to be perfect. Sadly I am not perfect. So I'm moving on to the Hive.
Ah yes, I saw a bit of what you were working on.  In the Hive, why don't you use the Charge Dart Rifle to control the mantid's position while you set up for the jump?  Also I'd like to mention that the map does show you the path all the way to the end so you can use it to assure success as long as you make the landing.  Also if you really want you can make it back after you get the key; Go to the closest point between the upper bridge and the platform and you can strafe jump back without death warping.

No, I don't need to get back safely, I just kill myself at that point, I was just fooling around. I don't actually need to control its position much, it's not the biggest problem. The biggest problem is timing my jump perfectly so I know if I land and lose my backwards speed, or if I have to hold the strafe right so I stay on the path while I move backwards. That's what's bugging me the most, it seems to be frame precise: on one frame you don't make it, next frame you stop on the ultra health, next frame you lose almost all your speed, next frame you don't lose it and you have to hold right, next frame you have too much speed and do off the path even if you try strafing to the right. To me it looks like I have a 3 frame window but I have to react differently depending on which exact frame I jumped on, and it's almost impossible to tell until it's too late.
Now I understand better, in any case the map can help you judge things a little more precisely.

The map proves to be pretty useful though! Cheesy
Good to hear ^.^

I prefer not to use it for most of the run first because I see where I'm going usually, and second because I guess it must be annoying to watch, but from now on I guess I'll use it on parts where it's useful. I already used it at the end of River of Souls simply because I move so fast I can barely understand what's going on. I think I will also use it in Death Marshes when I walk on narrow paths and I don't want to fall down, because it does happen a lot.
I don't think it looks bad at all, and using the map seems like a much better call than risking a death/retry over it to me -nod-
Hello again Bismuth, I've found 2 things that I think you'll find helpful while you're trying to single segment Turok 2-

Eye of truth bridge trick in Level 5; When you get to the green mantid before the bridge zap him with the charge dart rifle before he moves, to keep him at the right distance from the bridge.  Now line yourself up carefully between him and the bridge and crouch(for some strange reason this almost guarantees that Turok fly in a straight line when he jumps and gets hit).  Now instead of jumping back, just jump straight up without moving- This vastly reduces the amount of sliding done after you land.  Finally, after you land hold right for a second or two to keep you from sliding off the left side of the bridge.

Eye of truth skip in level 6;  As we all know by this point it takes both fan boost and a push from the wheel robot to get across here, but it turns out you don't need a full fan boost or a diagonal jump.  Thus I've made the jump moving straight forward and later I found out you can make the jump while going straight -back-.  Mind you, I've never made the jump across the razor wind bridge going backwards before but it's easy enough and fast enought to make that jump regularly then hit the switch to extend the bridge and go back to the fan tunnel to change your boost from a forward one to a backward one.  When you have your backward boost you'll notice that it's slower than the normal one, not to worry though because it's enough to do the job.  Now while running backwards make your way to the eye of truth pad and wait just before the edge while watching for the wheel robot's melee attack.  Just as it's about to hit start holding back and once you get pushed jump.  Finally, when you land tap forward a few times both to stop Turok from sliding and to cancel the backwards boost.  With this new strategy you can get a 100% success rate on the jump as long as you're lined up right and get the timing down fairly well.  It seems to have a little flexibility, where you can jump just a little bit late and still make it, but never jump too early as that always fails.

Hey, thanks for your tip on the eye of truth trick. I find that not moving backwards seems to be better indeed, but I think I remember I actually didn't... not sure though.

Anyway, I'm here to announce that I finally got to learn the Hive. I don't know it on the tips of my fingers but it's getting there. I've had attempts at speedrunning the first half of the mission (lol, we're almost getting fully segmented there) but only 3 of them (completed 2). It ends at the warp after the 1st embryo, so just before the big final area with the primagen key, satchel charges, 2 last embryos, master computer and portal to the totem.

My time: 15:34.57. http://www.twitch.tv/bismuth9/b/321397711?t=59m55s

I have a lot of trouble with the damage boosted jump at ~2 minutes into the mission. I'll have to practice this one as well...

Also on the same video, towards the very end, I was making some kind of lazy speedrun of the first 3 missions (13:23 port of adia) and a very bizarre bug seemed to get me stuck in the opening cutscene of Death Marshes. My gun was glitched and most of the controls didn't work. In fact, I think only the mouse did. Had to quit my run right there... it's the first time it happens but I do hope it's very rare or happens under certain circumstances I can avoid. Any clue about this?
After watching, I recognized that bug very well- When I have it in hi-rez mode that usually happens somewhere past an hour of game play after a cut scene.  I think what you're seeing is the locked position of the character used to keep you from interfering in a cut scene.  Curious fact; You can switch between explosive and regular ammo during a cut scene and it will be changed after the cut scene ends.  I also tghink I know why Turok 1 doeszn't interest you as much(same reason as me I presume), which is all the platforming.  I don't remember seeing any other speed run of a game that naturally required such precise jumping just to get through an area.  Of course for short cuts there are highly challenging jumps to do, but that's by choice.

Actually I think it's more of a graphics/gameplay thing, and because of my childhood. I played Turok 2 on N64 when I was young and loved it (actually it scared me to tears early on), but I didn't play the first one until PJ64 in say, 2005 or 2006, and I didn't like it.

I'll be streaming some Hive this evening. I think I actually got a half-decent first part of the mission, so after I get a little bit consistent with it I will do the other half and hopefully by the end of the week I will be speedrunning the whole mission. After the Hive, I'm pretty sure the Lair of the Blind Ones will be such a breeze Smiley

Edit: there is another extremely annoying bug... when I deathwarp (so far it happened only at the force field deathwarp after warp 2), sometimes, I get stuck in an infinite loop of Turok falling on a black screen. The only way to fix it is to close the game. Killed 2 runs so far... Also sometimes the platforms for the first key won't activate, but I think this is due to me leaving the room with the button too soon so the "button activated" state doesn't get loaded, so I just try to spend one more second in the room to make sure.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU the cutscene bug screwed me up again when entering Death Marshes. I did Port of Adia in 12:58 (extraordinary) and was well-prepared for a sub-47 on the first 3 missions. And then the game basically tells me to go fuck myself. God am I pissed right now.
Man, I wish I could figure out some answer to those glitches but I've never even found out what causes them in the first place...
Worthless categories WR master
Well it did happen 100% of the time when I attempted a run on first 3 missions after playing in the Hive. What I'll do in the future is, I'll close the game and start it back up when I want to attempt runs from the beginning. Also, I haven't watched my videos but I think the deathwarp bug may occur when I fall at a precise spot (too close from the wall?). Besides of that, I have no idea.
Just like to add I experienced the death fall glitch from time to time in my attempts. It's bad enough in a segmented run but that would suck so much in a SS. I've never experienced the cutscene bug though. What are your PC specs that you're using to play Turok 2?

Also well done for getting into the 12 minutes on POA ! I think my time was about 12:30. I sometimes wonder if 11 minutes is possible with the most perfect run, but that might be within the realms of TAS most likely.
Worthless categories WR master
Gigan: I know for sure there is about 30 seconds to cut from my 12:55 with perfect play, and I timed my run with yours by cutting all those save/load and I got to the conclusion that your time was about 12:50, because I was 5 seconds late after PoA. Maybe the in-game time is somehow different, but it would be no new story, as almost all games have silly in-game timing.
The death fall glitch messed up a semi-serious attempt of mine at doing the first 4 missions. Extremely annoying...
That's weird because on at least one of my totem attempts I saved it straight after in the level hub area I vividly recal seeing 12:34. It would be pretty annoying if each game was timing differently and inconsistently but I doubt it.
Worthless categories WR master
but I mean, in-game time vs real time can be different sometimes, maybe it cuts cutscenes, maybe it cuts warp times, maybe it's simply running slightly slower, etc.

I could do sub-46:30 on first 3, I just choked a sub-47 run tonight and ended up 47:08.26, fuuuu

Also the death fall glitch happened again. Discouraging.

51:38 to the Hive. (51:49 - 11 seconds to type .done blah blah blah in SRL irc)
1:07:57 to destroy the second queen embryo. After that stuff went kinda bad :/

http://www.twitch.tv/bismuth9/b/321905311 Sub-46 is not out of my reach! VERY good run on Death Marshes, very solid River of Souls as well... +46 after Port of Adia Sad Final time: 46:38.98. About 10 seconds to save on River of Souls and 50 on Port of Adia, so I say I could POSSIBLY (not probably) be able to do sub 45:30 someday.

As for the death fall glitch... It seems to happen 100% when I fall for the 3rd time. Problem: I fall for the force field 2 mins in (can't die by taking damage, my hp is still too high at that point, minimum ~45-50 maximum ~75), I do it for the eagle feather, and for the Primagen key. Here's my idea: when I enter the warp for Primagen key, I pause the game, pause the timer, save my game, quit, open the game again, load my save, and unpause the timer. It should help me avoid that insanely annoying run-killing bug.

4-level runs are coming.

Edit: I can do sub 12:40 on Port of Adia.
