Yes, The SNES lost because it didn't have Dark Castle. Suck it!
I just want to throw in my story... my opinions on systems is entirely based on those that I owned. I never went to friends houses much to play on other systems. I started with an NES which I loved for Mario, Yoshi Cookie, Pinball, and Pictionary - yes, sad but true... then I remember getting a Super Nintendo on which I logged innumerable hours playing Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat II, and Link to the Past (Breath of Fire 1 and 2 and Earthbound I played later via emulator). After that I eventually got an N64 where I obsessively played Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, GoldenEye, Jet Force Gemini, and of course, Star Fox 64. Meanwhile I had an original GameBoy with Mario Land, Tetris, and Alleyway being the only games of worth I owned for that. I breifly owned a Virtual Boy which I regrettably gave away or something after getting an N64. I never acquired a GameCube, but accidentally won my PS2 by playing Dance Dance Revolution (for the first time at a Christmas Party). On the PS2 I love Ratchet and Clank 1, 2, and 3, Jak and Daxter, Breath of Fire 3, 4 and 5, Ace Combat 4, and Dark Cloud 2. On the computer I played plenty of Sim City 2000, FreeSpace, Alpha Centauri, and Total Annihilation, but was never truly devoted to much else.
My only memorable experience with Sega was with Sonic, Mortal Kombat, and Earthworm Jim. I honestly never recall playing on a PS1 except Crash Bandicoot in a game store. I've only ever seen some wrestling game on the DreamCast. I've only ever used a gamecube controller to play Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 on someone elses wii. I've only played Halo 1 and 2 on XBOX and while I've atleast seen an XBOX 360, I've never seen a PS3.
Why did I list off the highlights of my video game history? I suppose just to show folks that I, and surely many others, have a very limited perspective of the gaming world. For some unknown reason I followed Nintendo until I was old enough to be broke and I've never purchased a console since!
Anyways, I suppose I'll throw a list together. Since I don't have much historical perspective I'm ranking them based on which ones I would want to have if I could only have 1 system, then second place is my top pick of the remaining systems and so on. I'm basically sorting only those systems I've played (NES, SNES, N64, GameBoy, PS2, PC).
1. N64 2. SNES 3. PS2 4. NES 5. PC
Sorry for being long-winded, but that precedent seems to have already have been set.
1. PS2- dont even get me started on the games. FFX, FFXII, GoW, MGS3, enough said 2. PSX- FF series. enough said 3. SNES- AlttP does it for me 4. GC- fun system with some great games 5. Xbox 360- I just love Oblivion and Gears of War
Why do most people prefer old consoles to new ones? The Xbox 360 has everything you could possibly want and the Wii will soon have and maybe the PS3 but I know nothing about that.
Well when it comes to the bleeding edge generation a lot of people may be not including them in consideration because they haven't played out yet. More importantly though most people are voting systems for their games, which don't always follow the same curve as technology.
I'll bite. These are all including games that didn't make it to the US. This is just my opinion, blah blah, I don't hate you or your dog.
1) PS2 - The selection of decent games is ridiculous and the top end is great too. I know there are so many games out there I haven't played, that are better than most things I beat on GC. Seriously, games like Cubivore and Odama wouldn't be cult classics on the PS2 since good obscure games are actually in abundance. 2) SNES - Helluva lot of good games too. And a lot of games I really like.
3) Saturn - Not a very deep lineup, but there were some great games. Maybe if I think about this hard enough, I'd admit the PS1 was "better," so maybe the underrated angle fits in here somehow. Nah, maybe not. 4) Genesis - A very deep selection here too, but less games that I thought were truly great.
5) NES - Not that I think it deserves it, because most games were utter shit, but when you're a monopoly, that's quite the advantage to work with.
HM in no order) PS1, TG-16 (of course I mean PCE), DC
I really like the 360 so far. It might crack the top 5 somehow when it's all over.
For arcade boards, which is related, I'd go some order of CPS2, NeoGeo, NAOMI. I'd have to think about it.
1)GBA ( all the pokemon games made it for me i was able to game everywhere even when i was being sneaky in schoolz!) 2)N64 ( pokemon, and the mario games also zelda games were epic) 3)SNES ( super mario world, zelda link 2 teh past) 4)Ps2 ( all the Gta's and metal gear) 5)wii ( super mario galaxy 1 and 2 also the pokemon game ever tho it was shit i still played it)
Sure, I'll do this, but solely based on my gaming history. This is NOT an objective list, it is thoroughly subjective and says more about me than gaming as a whole.
5) Xbox 360. Deserves a spot purely for the existence of XBLA, which I use to play a ton of old-school games I never owned the systems for. Also: great controller, great library purely based on breadth, great online. 4) N64. Never owned one, but I've had some of the fondest memories with this console. To me, the last of the "pick up and play" consoles. No dashboard, no home button, just you, a cartridge, and a goofy (yet weirdly comfortable) controller. 3) Gameboy Color. My God, Pokemon. It was a childhood obsession. 2) Xbox. It was a Halo machine for me, but I loved Halo to pieces. 1) PC. Didn't own a console till my teens, and there are so many PC-only games I loved through my childhood. StarCraft, Half-Life, LEGO Island, SimCopter, any of the Maxis games, really, Age of Empires II, Zeus: Master of Olympus, Caesar III, Gizmos and Gadgets...
