Eh, I'll experiment. Worse comes to worse, I can't use that disc again. Either way, I'll have at least the first few segments up, if only to generate interest.
HUGE bump

Is anyone still interested in a PAL any% run of this game? I'm looking to get properly into speedrunning, and this was always a favourite as a child.
Hello, I just started running Tomba 2 single segment any% and 100% using a PS1 Disc in a PS3

I have a couple questions about 100%.

Since Tomba 2 has 4 Bonus events via Tomba 1 savefiles, I was wondering how to categorize the two different 100% routes. I feel that is unfair to force someone to buy and play Tomba 1 to get a true 100% in Tomba 2. So I was thinking about seperating 100% into two different categories... "100% - Black Tuxedo" for achieving 100% without doing the 4 bonus missions and "100% - Red Tuxedo" for 100%+ 4 bonus events.

Also I have another question on how to define 100%, currently I have it defined as:

133/133 Events
16 Vitality
Magic Gauge Upgraded Twice (Fully Upgraded)
All Weapons
All Suits/Robes
All Pants
All Items (except lunch boxes and magic juice/water)
5 Seeds of Strength collected during Trolley
No need to collect all the gems or open all chests( this is way too 100% for me )

My last question is when to start and end the timers. I start my timer as soon as I press "Start Game" and end the timer upon receiving the Tuxedo from Kainen.

That being said I dont have any streaming or recording equipment to show proof but my PB's so far are

any% = 1:27:39
100% - Black Tuxedo = 3:47:18

I don't know much about the game since I never got around to buying it, but there was a TAS started earlier this year but it got abandoned. But maybe there is some information in the topic that is useful for a real time speedrun: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13731 (also contains encoded WIPs on YT)

Good luck.

Totally Radical Awesome Game
Since there is some discussion going on here, here is my Tomba 2 PB of 1:22:26 (ps2 slim fast disc speed ntsc) http://www.twitch.tv/cavemandcj/c/2213901
It is improvable,  but this game is super boring to run so I'm not gunna improve that lol.
The neat little jump thing the TAS does is doable in real time, but I never got around to implementing it. Seems like it would only be a situational thing at best.
As far as 100%, whatever you need to do to get the tux should suffice. Nothing more nothing less

Move Speed trick thing looks interesting, I'll try messing around with it.

I just watched CavemanDCJ's run and there are some tricks I picked up for my route. Not sure if mentioned before but I found that you dont have to enter the trolley entrance to trigger the magic wing option. If you "talk" to the save point it triggers the magic wing Trolley Entrance option. Also at the Circus Village there is no need to talk to the Red Women with basket, its possible to just go straight to the triangle cog cutscene which triggers the circus ball.

For 100%, not collecting all the health pots and magic upgrades feels kinda not 100%-ish but oh wells, I'll change my route to doing stuff for the tuxedo or make two separate routes or something, one with collecting all the extra stuff(health, etc.) and one with focusing only on getting the tux
Where is the vitality max 1+ in wobbly wharf? (Tomba)
Hi, never really looked at these forums but I stumbled across it while looking for other games to learn.

Anyway, I'm f_swipes, Tomba lover and current WR holder for any%: 59:06! My Twitch channel is twitch.tv/f_swipes

I have always loved this game so I figured learning to speedrun it would be perfect for me. The first rule for speedrunning in my opinion is to find a game you absolutely love to play over and over without getting sick of it. So after watching the SDA video and seeking out more current speedrunners for the game (bizkit047 and zerosevenscu) I started to practice and run the game a lot more over the past year I guess. Eventually I turned my 1:28:xx time all the way down to 59:06. zeroseven and I have found some really cool tricks in the game that were previously unknown such as the Phoenix Mountain skip and the Pig Bag Skips. If you're interested in learning about these, check out the video highlights in my Twitch channel!

I think there's still a bunch of little tricks waiting to be discovered. Tomba is a largely unexplored game, so I'm happy to see more people getting into it like I have. I am happy to talk to anybody about getting into speedrunning Tomba because I hope the competition and community will grow!

Looking forward to the future of Tomba speedrunning Cheesy

PS Tomba 2 is bad.

Thanks, Warepire! Forgive the dropped frames every so often and weird commentary. This was at like 3 AM and I was pretty out of it. X_X
Totally Radical Awesome Game
Just kidding, I improved it

Should I submit this?

I'm not sure if I am qualified to have an opinion, but from the commentary to the run it sounds like the game can really mess with you.
So if you really don't want to try more, submit. Otherwise you can always keep it as a fallback.

Hello every, Zerovii (Or zerosevenscu as I'm known on twitch until I get a name change) here. I'm happy to see there is some more interest right now. I'm currently practicing and studying in hopes of cutting down the run to sub 59 on top of updating the TAS.

There's some tricks I don't quite understand though. In forest of 100 flowers, going from left to right, the second dwarf's "free!" animation can be skipped completely but I don't understand how tricking the trigger actually happens. I'd be happy if anyone wanted to look more into it.

Aside from that, I'm trying to find a way to skip the event trigger in charity square so we can grab those two extra charity wings without having to wait the 7 seconds for the event activation.

EDIT:Also wish I had a technical explanation as to why swipes select on the navy pig bag (old tree hill 100k chest) doesn't work while it works on yellow (trick village 100k chest) and orange (baccas village 1k chest). I have literally pause buffered to the last frame you can before you acquire the navy bag and the trick just doesn't work.

Porkchoppan: 2014-02-06 01:29:10 pm
Hey there, I'm a new runner and have been practicing Tomba off and on for about a month now. My twitch name is Gutschan (http://www.twitch.tv/gutschan), but I usually go by Porkchop. My current PB is 1:00:44 (any%) on ePSXe. I haven't really visited these forums, but I have a question that I couldn't really find an answer to anywhere else.

My question is related to running on emulator vs console.

I've done a bit of testing and I've noticed that on ePSXe and PCSX-R, loading times over all (menus included) are a few seconds faster, and in the long run this makes quite a difference. Mednafen (or the Retroarch core) is an accuracy emulator, so it's loading times and everything else are the exact same as the PSN version (and I assume the original, I don't have the disc anymore so I can't test). The current WR is on an emulator, and another record I seen is on PS2 with fastdisk which seems to have similar times to using an emulator.

So my question is, being new to the speedrunning scene, what is generally accepted? For submissions I'm aware that emulators don't seem to be, but in general people don't have too much of an issue with them. Should I continue with ePSXe or would I just be better off doing it on Mednafen/PSN version? (using Mednafen for now to stream until I can find a way for my PS3).

Another question, are there any existing leaderboards?

Also the other day I spent a bit of time and wrote up some notes on a bunch of sections of the game, mostly just stuff I've noticed from run videos and playing through myself so many times. I'm sure pretty much all of it is known at this point but I figured I'd share it anyways. I may be wrong on some things, so feel free to correct me, I'd love to know!

I've done it accidentally a few times during practice, and once during a run, but I haven't been able to figure out what it is. I know it's possible to jump off the spore and not have it go all the way up and hit the trigger, so the only thing I can think of is that it has to do with speed and specific timing.

I've tried many times to skip it, and while it's possible to jump up and grapple just before it triggers, it pulls you right back down, I can't really think of anything else that would skip it.

Runs made on the PSN version of the game can be submitted here, so if you intend to submit at some point, you are not required to find a new game disc, just use the PSN version.

In order to record / stream from a PS3 you might need to jump through a couple of hoops compared to other consoles, but thankfully there is a HUGE topic on how to do it here:
https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/how_to_bypass_hdcp_for_use_with_blackmagic_intensity_ps3_owners_read_here.html
And if you still have problems after reading it all, you can use the same topic to ask for help.

In that case, what would the WR be based off? I'm not too concerned about the WR, just want to do a run I'm proud of, but I'm curious.

Ah I'll give that a read, thanks.
