Another rainy day (well, a floody day) in England, so I decided to do a segmented single-segment run (a segmented run whereby I did it in one sitting).

Final time of 0:51, which is equivalent to 0:42.5 NTSC time. I didn't optimise a couple of the pig battles (yellow, navy and orange, notably) due to their erratic spawning; basically, I lost around 30-45 seconds here alone, because I couldn't be bothered to restart >10 times if I was only doing this "for the sake of it". I only spent a couple of hours on it in total (remember, in game timing is waaaay off).

Also, I was only using one file, so I messed up once (not visiting mermaid, and having to do so later, wasting a charity wing) because I was pleased with managing the red pig perfectly. The warp I didn't use as a result of this was from the bottom of Trick Village to the 10,000 Year Old Man, so I lost another ~20 seconds.

I -might- do a segmented run in the future (if I ever get around to any run) purely because I would like to get a run of each of the three feasible runs (any%, 100% and SS) on SDA. I'm fully aware the the any% PAL would be pointless to do, but meh.

@ Rob: how's the Tombi 2 run coming along?
I feel like I'm talking to myself a bit, but meh...

Finally finished a 100% "serious practice run" of Tombi, that I started before my disc wouldn't play. Final time: 1:38. Looks like my intial playthrough (2:10-ish) was pretty horendous; I was only doing a playthrough following an optimised route, but still... =/ I'd be aiming for 1:35-ish for the real thing; if anyone does it before me on NTSC, they should aim for ~1:19, because it will probably be a while before I do it (still no recording facilities).

Oh yeah, and a little tidbit: "The Cute Witch" is missable. If you go putting ingredients in Mizuno's cauldron before speaking to her, you can't complete the event. I almost did this in my run (which would have sucked, since it's one of the very last things I do) but I did a practice of the last 3 segs in one go, and found this out then.

Finally, you fall about 100,000 AP short of 1,000,000 AP that is necessary for the Flower Tower, so I went to Old Tree Hill first so that whilst I completed "Tree of Knowledge Knows" I could collect the AP gem out of the 1 million year old chest.

Very good to know, that's a lot faster than I predicted it would be.
That's definitely not good missing that.
Nice MTG do you have a recorder yet?

I'm currently using a 28 segment route that you posted earlier. Is this still the most optimal? I know there's still the problem of the lunch-box; if "When the Wind Dies Down" was done before the second visit to the Hidden Village, that would be sorted. Otherwise, getting the one from behind the hay wall would probably be a good choice.

Also, I ended up with 16 cheeses. I might have picked up an extra one in the underground maze, but if the route does in fact involve collecting 16, one of these could be dropped.

And no, I don't have a recorder. I'm tempted to do a "YouTube quality run" (camera pointed at TV), just to sort out any route problems, and because you have millions of comments on your YT page/videos of any% run asking for a 100% run =P

Edit: I heard somewhere that PCSX could now be used for TASing (because it has video playback); have you thought about doing a "good" TAS of Tombi (rather than a perfect TAS) just to see how low the time can go?

I planned it to get the 16 cheeses, 15 aren't enough.
I don't use a playstation emulator.  I'd watch a cam-at-screen run.
Edit history:
MTGjumper: 2008-09-15 08:33:01 am
I always thought only 15 cheeses were necessary. Regardless, I had 1 cheese left over at the end, so by that logic, I collected 17 in the run.

Late edit: it's a reasonable time in the day now, so I'll expand this post.

I'll see what I can do about recording with a camera. Our only video camera is very old and the quality is (probably) poor, and school has started recently so everything is a bit hectic. Saying that, I might have the first segment up tonight =D I'll try and finish with a time of 1:35, so that will demand quite a high level of play quality.

Also, I probably need a new memory card: I have four blocks available for Tombi, which currently are my first playthrough, my 2:11 time, my 1:38 time and a single segment 100% I did last week =P I'll be utilising two saves in total, in case I screw up.
So, I got a great first seg. done with "YouTube quality recording" (this mean resting a camera on a pile of cushions and books in a place that made playing awkward) but I only found out after this that the camera can only record for 3 minutes before stopping. Granted, it is a camera rather than a video camera; our video camera is so old it actually uses tapes =P

... I'll try and sort something out. Maybe borrow a mates camera, because he has some awesome filiming equipment.

Dang.
That youtube quality 43 minute run of mine was done in a camcorder with tapes :p

MTGjumper: 2008-09-19 02:00:29 pm
I can promise nothing. I'll look into it, but my brother left for University yesterday, and he was the only one in the family with any knowledge of technology.

But was your camcorder from the mid-90s? =P I'll see if that can be used anyway.
(I know this is a bit soon for a double post, but I wasn't sure if anyone would check the thread otherwise =P )

Anyway, first segment recorded. It's better than the one that I thought I had recorded but didn't. Anyway, what's the best way to get the video off the tape and onto the computer? (I told you my computer knowledge was lacking). Is it possible to leave the tape in the camera and wire the camera into the computer, or is there another way?
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
Depending on the cables and ports on your cam and comp.
I use a DV cable but I haven't seen a newer computer with a DV input.

Second segment recorded.

However, at this rate, this could all be for nothing. I've heard that you can buy video cassette player-things that can be plugged into your computer, which would be exactly the thing I need.

Also, I'm slightly annoyed that I'm going for a high play quality run, fully aware it's only for YouTube. I could have quite easily accepted some of my first attempts for a YT run, but the final one is probably good enough for SDA. Meh, you can be the judge of that =P

Edit: If I were to record this via VHS, what would be the best way to then transfer it onto the computer> I'm under the impression that VHS is not accepted here, but if you record via VHS and upload the video to a computer then put it onto disc/send it to Nate, that's OK. Is this correct?

Either way, I might just record by VHS, providing I can easily get it onto the comp.
Wow, major bump.

Well, I've been occasionally furthering my 100% speedrun (unrecorded obviously). I doubt I'll ever end up actually recording and/or submitting a real run, but I'll let you use as a reference for when you do your 100% run, Rob Wink

Anyway, onto the topic at hand. I've been playing about recently with trying to get OoB. In the past, I've found a number of locations where you can get semi-Oob using grapple, although I'd never really realised the potential of the Jewel of Wind for this (even though I knew it could be used for some clipping). A fairly easy place to get OoB is in the lava caves, on the plant below the plant that is next to What the Thief Lost (the item, not the quest). To your left is an alcove, and if you hit the angle of the corner, you can get OoB. Add Jewel of Wind and Funky Parasol, and you can stay OoB for longer. Also, in this black area is at least one platform which you can step on, but not see.

Anyway, this OoB spot was slightly disappointing in that you can achieve nothing with it, but there is still hope in less enclosed areas. I've managed to get OoB using the grapple on Stormy Mountain, for example, but have not tested it with the Jewel of Wind or Funky Parasol yet, because it's rather hard to do. Might lead to something interesting; let's hope so anyway.

I'll end my incoherent ramblings now. Smiley
THE GAME!!
OoB glitches in a side-scrolling game? Now that's a first for me.

Are you still gonna record the PAL any%, MTG?
Probably not. I've done a 0:49 unrecorded though, which is equivalent to 0:41 on NTSC.
Just finished segment 20 of my unrecorded 100%. Just checking if it was best to complete "Tree of Knowledge Knows" just before triggering the Flower Tower, as I need the AP from the golden chest at Old Tree Hill too. I've torn a muscle in my leg, by the way, so have lots of time to waste, so I'll probably be finished very soon.
Dunno if RJ still checks SDA, but nevertheless...

Almost finished unrecorded run. I think I've noticed a couple of timesavers, but I'll save them for when the run's finished. You never know, if we ever get a DVD recorder, I might actually record this thing now.

Been glitch hunting a bit. I'm pretty sure any ceiling that can be grappled onto can be climbed up into, even if it's not meant to be able to. Basically, grapple upwards from standing still, try to climb with up + x, then grapple upwards again really quickly. After a few times, the grapple will catch higher up, and if you try to climb up, you will. I haven't found any real use (and frankly, I doubt there will be any). Notably, I managed to get into the loading zone of the 10,000 year old man's hut from the underside, thereby bypassing the loading point (if that makes sense) but it wasn't of any use. I was wondering if in places such as Phoenix mountain if the death due to falling could be bypassed by falling through somewhere where you can't normally die by falling.
Hmm... quadruple post. I wonder if anyone will read this then...

Anyway, finally finished my final practice run. Final time: 1:24. I seriously thought sub-1:20 was gonna happen, but I underestimated the length of some of the later segments. I will post a few route/segmentation changes, then see if I can actually record this run Smiley

Seriously, someone read this please.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Don't judge people reading threads by the number of posts, the number of views is much more telling. I get basically zero posts in my thread, but still get about 100 views every couple weeks (and that's without updates).

Good luck with your run.

I need to collect one less cheese. Where to lose it? Potentially segment 22?

These are my notes typed up on Word. My alterations were all in red, but they don't show up and can't be bothered to manually change them all. Anybody with any useful input here?
Super-bump.

Four segments recorded, and I'm currently making sure that they are all recorded to SDA standards. I won't be uploading progress to YoutTube until I have a substantial amount of footage on the DVD, so don't be surprised if 12 segments are uploaded all at once in the near future. (How do other people upload segments one at a time? Doesn't this use up a DVD each time?)

Anyone interested? :p
Balls jerky
Not everybody records to dvd. If you use a capture card, it's trivial to upload one segment.
Sandbagging
I record to dvd-rw so i can use it mutliple times :s
I'm using dvd-rw. I was under the impression I had to finalise it to rip the video off...
Sandbagging
You dont have to do that for rw's. (Atleast not on my dvd recorder)
