Well, I think all that really needs changing around is feeding the fatty during the second visit to the Hidden Village (providing the "When the Wind Dies Down" room contains a lunch box) and going to the Ol' Tree of Knowledge at the end of the game.

Hopefully, I will have started next week. The first segments are quite easy, but I'll want the leaf butterflies segment critiquing to judge whether it took too long.
Well, the cable-thing came, and guess what? It doesn't do what we thought (by we, I mean my brother, the most technologically literate member of the family; don't worry, I making sure he gets blamed). Does anyone know of a cable that connects your TV to your PC, and allows you to record TV channels (and, more importantly, AV) onto your computer hard drive? My brother keeps referring to it as a "splitter"...

In Tombi news, I decided to do a spur-of-the moment SS of Tombi, just for the heck of it. Bear in mind that I haven't played the game for a while, and was following no route, but I still managed to finish it in 1:06. If I hadn't have died in the lava caves ~5 times, messed up the yellow pig battle, actually known the locations of the maths beads, or accidently wasted a bunch of charity wings, I would probably have been closer to an hour. 1:06 PAL = 0:55 NTSC, so I should probably aim for 0:55 PAL = 0:46. (Oh, and by the way, my suspicions of the timer being way off were correct; I was playing for ~1:40.)

I'm still unsure if I should go for an SS first of 100% seg'd, providing I rectify my recording situation. I'll leave it to popular opinion (well, basically, a decision between myself and you, Rob).

We're sure there's a speed difference in the PAL version?

I think the SS would be quicker to complete, and it would sharpen your skills so less attempts will have to be done with each 100% run segment until you get it right.
I'm 90% sure there's a difference. I hope there is, or my time was a hell of a lot worse than I thought.

I watched your run again to remember what to do. I basically had the first 10 segs memorised (well, not memorised per se, I'm just used to the game) but I need to practice the lava caves.

Also, do you know anything about this "cable dilemma"?

It seems more likely if you were playing for 100 minutes that your time was 66, not 55.
I have no clue about hooking AV cables to computer, sorry. Try the tech support page.
I think the route I did for the bunk flowers is optimal but very tricky to do correct.
THE GAME!!
You'd need a capture card, go to Tech Support for more details. I have one, but I am no expert on setting them up.
@ bunk flowers: I'll be using the same route as you; basically, the first three are easy, but the last two are from a huge leap of faith. I've been practicing them a bit more this morning Tongue I'll probably allow myself one death for the lava caves.

100 minutes real time would yield a 1:06 PAL time, which would still equate to a 0:55 TSC time. On an NTSC console, a 0:55 run might take ~ 90 minutes.

How much is a decent capture card?

Another day, another practice run, another ho-hum time. 1:02, so an improvement of 4 in-game minutes, and ~7 real life minutes. Also, I've come to the conclusion whereby I'm 95% sure PAL is indeed 50Hz, because there is no way I dropped 20 in-game minutes/~35 real minutes.

Notable mistakes:

- Missing that jump over 5 egg plants in the Forest of All Beginnings
- Messing up the get-puppy-Baron jump 5 times...
- Forgetting the healing mushroom in Mushroom Forest, and going back for it
- Accidently charity wing-ing to a wrong location, meaning I had to walk from Baccus Village to the North Side of the Mansion
- Dying twice to the Green pig...
- Dying once in the lava caves =D (yes, I'm happy it was only one death)
- Messing up the grapple over spikes in Masakari Jungle and dying.
- Charity winging to a wrong location, meaning I had to walk from Dawrf Village to Mushroom Forest

They are accountable for a fair bit of lost time. Other lost time was with the Math Beads, missing the dwarves a few times, being unable to grapple to the purple evil pig bag well, and other minor stuff that I can easily tighten up. But the Black Evil Pig was an almost perfect battle

Oh, what about consistent strategies for the evil pigs? I lost a lot of time there.

Green: I can do the glitch-through-platform bagging, but often, he won't spawn there straight away, and that method is very reliant on the bag facing the right way. Need a good strat.
Purple: Go to top, bag. Easy.
Orange: Spawns unreliably. Normally, I go to the first platform and bag him there, but waiting for the pig bag is a nightmare.
Red: Normally wait on the middle platform for him to spawn nearby. Quite easy.
Navy: Quite easy. Wait in the parting of platforms at the top, then bag her.
Yellow: Really annoying. I normally wait in the whirlpool, but a combination of erratic spawning and circling pig bag make it difficult. Help?
Blue: Pah, second easiest. Wait in the middle, then bag.
Black: Easiest pig in the game. Really.

New run: 1:00.

Mistakes:

- 4 Deaths
- Triggering "What's Cooking?" and then landing inside a pig, so when the words go off screen, I get damaged and die.
- Dying whilst happy and before the green pig, meaning I had to alter the route of the haunted mansion to go get happy via the back door entrance to Mushroom Forest.
- Going to visit 1000 year old man, but having forgotten to get both the small key and break the last egg.
- Missing the charity wing that can fall into the abyss on Phoenix Mountain, and therefore having to alter the route to visit Charity Square before meeting the mermaid, to get the charity wings. The detour doesn't lose time, but due to one less charity wing, I had to swim to 10,00 year old man after the math beads, rather than warp.
- One death in Lava Caves.
- Messing up math beads and losing a life in the process (those spinning things are very temperemental), and then messing up going to Ol' Tree of Knowledge from underwater.
- All big battles were either acceptable or awesome, bar the last two.

Green: Same as in the 0:41 run. =D
Purple: Bit of time lost, because I just realised that the platforms are connected, hence the seemingly "random" damage.
Orange: Good, spawned three times though.
Navy: wait, throw. Good.
Yellow: Awesome! Same as 0:41 run! =D

... and the two easiest:

Blue: awful- it kept spawning up high where I can't reach it.
Black: awful. Kept spawning way away. And what the hell, he can use every other pig's magic, bar the yellow. I got meteored, lightning'ed, whirlwinded, boulder'ed, blue balled and perfumed! Never happened to me before; I thought he only stopped time.

I think I could get down to 0:57, but 0:55 might be too unrealistic, due to the random nature of the pig bosses.
THE GAME!!
I'm not too sure how much capture cards cost. I was actually lucky enough to get one for Christmas.
You could ask Santa to see how much it cost =P

I'm determined to get ~0:58 tomorrow.
THE GAME!!
Hmm...I could always try. But I suggest you have a good look at electronic stores and see if they have any.

Good Luck.
Argg, latest run, died 6(!) times, and lost happy Tombi so I had to take a detour again to reach Mushroom Forest. However, final time = 0:57! Oh yeah!

- 6 deaths
- Messed up Masakari spikes 3 times, dying twice.
- Died again in Masakari.
- Died in Mushroom Forest.
- Died in Phoenix Mountain.
- Died in Lava Caves, not because I missed any platforms, but because when I jumped to the pig door, I hit the wall, and since I was on 1 health, lost another life.
- Lost happy.

Green: Awesome, glitch through ledge.
Purple: Good. Bagged after third spawn.
Orange: Good. Bagged after third spawn.
Navy: Mediocre. Four spawns: could've bagged her on the first but instead of throwing downwards, I accidently threw to the right...
Yellow: Awesome. Spawned in whirlpool, did his "thang" then whilst he laughed, I bagged him.
Blue: Perfect. Spawned right below bag.
Black: Good. Two spawns, first was out of reach, second was just in reach, and I managed an awesome bagging with the bag off the screen.

Also, it should be noted that during the time period before I managed to land on the black pig, he managed to use lightning powers, which although didn't hit me, makes me believe that sub-1 hour on PAL results in him using random magic. Either that, or I keep getting unlucky on my fastest attempts.

Factoring in all of these mistakes, and given enough attempts, 0:55 could be achievable. And frankly, that would be an awesome time (equivalent to ~0:45 on NTSC, 4 game minutes slower than Rob's run).

Finally, regarding 7 seven friends, isn't it optimal to get the Village of Civilization friends in right, left, up, order? That way, you avoid having to view the "walk into iron tower" bit twice (going in, coming out).
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
That's getting better! I'd say no deaths for the final run, but that's gonna be tough. You're right about the order of friends, I had thought the lumberyard friend was higher up.
According to sig, I'm allowing one death. Most likely, that would be in somewhere like Mushroom Forest if I were to allow it; one that doesn't cost time, and I no I probably wouldn't have been able to avoided (y'know, considering there are plants jumping about everywhere, and a pit of doom).

4 runs in 5 days, so now that I've got a feel for where my strengths and weaknesses are, I'm going to do a slow playthrough tomorrow, practicing various bits. Notably, I want to be able to consistently pull of the Masakari grappling, the death jump in the Lava Caves, Phoenix Mountain, Math Beads and a couple of the pigs.

Do you know anything of the final pig doing random magic? What causes it perhaps? because it can slow me down considerably at the very end.
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
I got to the last pig at the 40 minute mark, and had no problems with his magic.  Too bad I've deleted the save, or I could see if he used all 7 magics.
I'm tempted to do an average quality segmented run in the near future to work out what the quickest time on PAL is (well, approximately, if my run is of only "average" quality).

Apparently, the last pig only does magic in the PAL version.
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
The last pig surely throws perfume and meteors among other things on my NTSC copy.
How did you trigger it? I've tried all three of my saves that are complete and on all of them, he only stops time. Anything notable, such as a sub-hour time?
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
well over 5 hours and I've experienced it.  And I'm fairly sure of the lightning too.
Lightning happens most often for me.

Also, PAL is 50Hz, I'm 100% sure. Although I'd all but confirmed it with my test runs, I manually timed the motocross course. In game time was 26 seconds (it was a bad run, I wasn't concentrating) but my watch timed it at ~31 seconds. 5:6 ~= 26:31. That explains why the time you need to achieve is the same.
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
And it confirmed my suspicions of why you could get gold medal 50% of the time :p
Why? Think about it: if the clock runs at 5/6ths of the speed, and the game runs at 5/6ths of speed, then it should be just as difficult to get the gold medal as on the NTSC version. By your logic, ~20.5 seconds is the PAL equivalent to 24.96 seconds NTSC, which I know is impossible.

I'm just awsum =D
two rows of links on main page pretty nifty
Because you're actually getting 27 real-life seconds to complete the course, no matter how fast the gogocar :p I might have gotten that backwards actually, sorry.  Something's gone wrong with your recorder? *your sig*
@ sig: I have no way of recording. We need a new DVD recorder, and have needed one for ages. As is, we are using VHS to record TV, and the quality is awful =D

@ gogocar: yes, we get ~29 real seconds to do it, but the game is slower too. It's just as difficult on PAL as it is on NTSC.
