Hello guys !

Since I've first tried "TinyB" when it came out on steam, about 2 month ago, I can't stop playing it and trying to beat my PB.

http://tinybarbarian.com/

As some of you may know, this game is an 2D platform action game. I think it's awesome because of the art, the level design, the general feel of it and its great music (by Jeff Ball). The game is not too hard, has some rng (mostly on bosses) and secret items to collect (diamonds).

We are a few to run it, but at the moment only 2 skips has been found (that I know of at least), and one is quite hard to pull out. No glitches so far. Unfortunately there's no video of a good run yet. I would do it, but I think I'm not good enough.

Voilà, I can only encourage people to try it, buy it (preferably on the developer's site) and join the competition ! If people are interested, I'll share everything I know about tricks and skip.

One thing to know however. The game is published by episode. The second one should come soon but keep in mind if you buy the first one, others episodes will be free.

Well, doesn't seems to be many runners interested in this game !

But no matter, I'm back to round up tricks and skips, for the few of us.

Attacks and combos :

Our tiny barb can do three different attacks, one leading to combos.

The normal attack can be chained 3 times, the third changing depending on inputs. Standing still will lead to a simple, stronger attack. Going forward will to a thrust attack. And finally, you can do jump-roll attack by pressing jump then quickly attack. This last combo is probably the most useful, as you are "shielding" yourself, attacking multiple times and jumping. During those combos, any of the third hit will do double damage, and knock back enemies.

If you press upward during an attack, you will do a round slash that hits all around you and knocks back a little.

If you attack during a jump, you will also deal double damage, and one thing to remember is there's no recovery, whereas the normal standing attack as some. So it's always a good idea to jump first if you need to attack.

And lastly there's an elbow drop, which is even more powerful as it does triple damage. As you land, you will also bump, so you can chain it.

All those differents moves will be used during the run (well at least in mine).

Tricks and skips :

As I said, there's only two skips that I know of, thanks to Jesuiscontent.

Underground skip:

This one is hard to do. After a lot of tries I still can't manage to grab the ledge...

Elevator skip:

This one is quite simple. Just watch for those damn bats !

And here are videos of how I do the second and the last boss:

They are quite easy to kill. For the second boss, when he's in the corner, just don't do any combos and he won't move, trying to knock you back. However, if for any reason he jumps and grabs the chain, entering his second pattern, you can throw back his first bomb with an upper attack. There's probably a faster way to kill him. For the last boss, he will sometimes move down so you can attack him. Just mash attacks, destroy pillars and if everything goes right, he'll die before the first wave of magic balls.

Unfortunately, I have no real tricks for the third boss, except trying to stay above him, on upper platforms, so you can reach him fast enough to stop him doing his giant magic ball, which is his most annoying attack.

The last "trick" to know is the restart. The game has an internal timer you can see when you play. It has also an option which allow you to restart a level. This option kill you and the death is counted in the ending stats screen, but the timer stops when you die and only starts again when you regain control of the barbarian. And I think this is a problem, because you can abuse that restart option to get a better time. So in my opinion, we should use our own timer rather that the in-game one. Or maybe we could have a deathless category, knowing it would be harder. And knowing some diamonds are tricky to get, a 100% deathless run would be awesome !

I really with all this more people will start running it. As for me, I will, no matter what !

PS : still hoping for a full run video from a better player than me.

Hi it's me from the Steam thread. Thanks for sharing the videos, I already did the elevator skip but I do it at the last block on the left, after the bats are gone, way safer and easier. The skip at the begining of the underground is pretty cool, I always suspected it could be done but I could never achieve it. Doing it in a RTA would be pretty hard....

As for game-time vs real time I think game time could be used for real single segment runs, SDA rules won't allow for pause abuse in game-time runs anyway. Unless the timer is somehow inaccurate. The leaderboards are fun and all but they allow for segmented runs by returning to title and starting from the last checkpoint, so I don't really know if people are doing that. Would be nice if a leaderboard was made for no resets/deaths or something. That said if people generally prefer real time I don't mind either.

I should be able to get a sub 17:xx time soon, I was on pace a few times but I always choke at stupid rooms or on the Snake Lord. Anyways, I hope people notice this little gem and I can't wait for Episode 2.

Edit: Pretty sure the #1 time on the leaderboard is fake or was made with exploits, unless there's something I'm unaware of.
Well, the snake lord isn't a problem for me, but I did not train enough on some rooms before him, which I'll do. I'm hoping to beat my PB by a full minute soon, and to record the run so we'll have more to discuss about !

Not sure the 1st time is a fake, but it would require to kill the third boss pretty quickly, among other things. Doubts are understandable, after all, we have no proof, yet...
Here's a few seconds faster strat for the 2nd boss.

That's great ! Always wondered if it was possible but never really tried. I'm gonna try that right away. Thanks !

Update : I trained your trick. There's a timing to learn but it's not too hard. I think it's possible to do it even faster if you can hit the boss while doing the two jumping attack, just like you do in the second part of your video. I kind of did it that way but he escaped me twice and I didn't saw how much time it took.

I also did some testing on the third boss and the best time I got from entering the room to the kill is around 40 seconds. Best way I found was to jump on him to land 3 to 4 hits. It might be possible to do more hits... I messed one time while training and after landing on the boss I did the up attack, which launch him into the air and I was able to do a rolling attack. His life just dropped... And he didn't even disappear !
Just beat my PB, I'm now at 17:02. Unfortunately I wasn't recording, I'm not used to record and wasn't expecting to do such a time to be honest. I was able to reach the 2nd boss at 7:05, after him still some mistakes, a bad rng on 3rd boss but overall I'm pretty happy.

The new best time is 15:23... WTH? I don't think it's possible. I mean, 16:26 was already kind of crazy but it's definitely doable. 15:23 ? I need proof Shocked
That's the time I was referring to when I said it was probably fake. Anyways, congrats on PB! I haven't played in a few days sadly, I'll probably play next week if I have time.

Cool boss strats. I'll definitely use these when I get back into the game. Also congrats on almost sub 17 Smiley

my time (15.23) is not made in a single segment
I restart levels from the screen title.

I train to do in single segment with a real timer (sorry for my english)
So I watched magnaud's stream today and we've discussed some tricks and I'd like record some of them. I first wanted to do it this night but it'll have to wait tomorrow or Saturday. I'll show some stuff I've been doing on "rooms" that require precise timing, tricks magnaud showed me (with the cat -the beast we ride... dunno why i call it a cat!- and before the 2nd boss) and bosses (the 1st and a repost of the 2nd since the video from Inffi doesn't seems to work anymore).

I have yet to record a good full run, which should be around 17min in single segment, my time on leaderboards (16:23) being a "segmented" run, and my best SS being 17:04 (which, to be honest, I have hard time reproducing...).

On another subject, the game is now available on Mac (via Humble shop) and, we should soon have news about the second episode !
So, me again.

I've been recording some stuffs yesterday. I wont list them here, since there's like a dozen, but you can find videos on my youtube channel (seka first). Tricks I learned from magnaud inclued the 2nd room with the beast (mostly letting the beast eat the last spearman), the pillars room and the 2nd chain skip (when you're outside again after the elevator). Couldn't show the last one because I still can't do it...

Magnaud also tried to show me a trick in the platforms room just before the 2nd boss, but it seems quite hard to do. From the chain you can grab the elevator to jump on the 2nd floor. If no bats hit you, you can grab the 2nd platform to reach the 3rd floor. From here if you do it right you can go grab the last one before it's to high, but for this part I couldn't do it because bats hit me all the time.
elevator skip (safe) :

Thanks for the vids, it gives me many things to work on Smiley
here's a smooth way i've found for the 3rd room of undergrounds :

Nice tricks, both, I'll definitely train those. Thanks.

I have some new stuff in mind, I'll tell you if anything goes as planned.

trick platforms before 2nd boss :

for info : sub 15 is feasible in multi-segment,and sub 16 is feasible in single segment/no death (timer of game) for serpent lord
Hey there !

It's been a while, but just wanted to share the news : Episode 2 is out since friday ! It's, imo, better. The second episode is quite longer and harder. The music, by the same composer, is just as good, if not better. Only downside is, there's a bit much auto scrolling rooms, but really, it's still great.

Not much to show for now. I'm enjoying the game and focusing on achievements.

For those who don't know the game, give it a try ! It's on sale on the official site and on steam.
Spent a little time routing the beginning of ep. 2 and found these two skips.

During my first playthrough I was pretty sure we could something with those rocks ! magnaud showed me the first one, I'll keep note of the second one.

Two skips during the first bee ride, thanks to magnaud for the second one :

I didn't find other skips. There's a bunch of stuff to keep in mind to optimize the run, but no other skips, yet. The challenge will be to make a decent run without dying.
strat "donkey kong" :
Got back to the first episode a couple of months ago, and just finaly did a sub 17 ss. You can watch it here : http://www.twitch.tv/sekafirst/c/5380250

First part is pretty good, except the first plateform skip. The late part of the game (after my fourth split)  is not so good, and even bad sometimes. Serpent Lord was okay and so was the giant serpent.

I'm going to work on episode 2 from now on.
