So, aside from working on a Prime 3 run (on the Wii of course), I'm considering doing a 100% segmented run on "Star Wars Tie Fighter".

This would be from the 'Collector's Edition' disc, using 'DosBox' to run it (anyone that knows a better way to play it on a pc using Windows XP, let me know).

Each segment would include a battle mission and and a quick look at the debriefing to show completion page.

Total time would be an addition of all the time readings as shown in cockpit when hitting 'spacebar' to enter starship, or hitting 'h' to hyperspace out.

Would SDA have a problem with me using the timescale command (ALT+T, once for 2x, again for 4x, and again to go back to 1x). If you don't know, in the 'Collector's Edition', they added this to speed up slow parts of the game, like, when flying long distances in slow ships. The timer speeds up as well. This has 2 important functions, one is to saveon file size when recording, the other is to save lives by not letting ppl die of boredom during those parts Tongue .

And while using the ALT+T to save space/lives, i'd also like to include all the cutscenes, to replace that space. Some really old school stuff, but still cool. But of course, to save on file size, I can not put those on. File size is pretty important, since there are a lot of missions. Also, this would not include training medals or the combat simulator medals, purely the Battles.

But before I do it, more importantly, would anyone be interested in watching it?

I don't think emulated runs are accepted... Lemme check the rules...
http://speeddemosarchive.com/rules.html
Quote:
Emulators: We will NOT accept demos recorded on emulators (ZSNES, VBA, etc). This is not because we think you are cheating; it's just that we can't prove that you're not. Tricks such as slowing games down undetectably on emulators are widely known, so in the interest of fairness, they won't be allowed to count as records. Also many emulators have a lot of bugs and slowdown, even if they are set to automatically adjust the framerate. Note that an exception is made for official emulators such as Nintendo's NES emulator that comes with some GameCube games, although owing to the "deflickering" video effect applied by many official console emulators it is nearly always preferable to play on the original hardware from the perspective of video quality.

I think that includes DOSBOX, but I can't say for certain.

IIRC, there was a Windows version of TIE Fighter... It might work with XP.

In any case, I would love to see a run of this game. I loved playing it when I had my old 486 and had it on floppy so many years ago Tongue
Waiting hurts my soul...
I forget which thread it was in, but emulation includes Dosbox, so none of that.  You'll have to get your hands on some DOS software and a machine to run it.  Good luck with recording too.  DOS games would be great to have on here.

well poo
I seem to recall not being able to play it on XP.  I didn't look into the problem though.  Maybe there's a patch of some kind or at the very least you could find an early windows system instead of DOS.  Also, TIE Fighter was awesome.

well, i've looked pretty thouroughly on it, and dosbox was/is the best, as it just emulates dos, not the game itself

i know nothing of dosbox allowing me to do anything to the game that couldn't be done otherwise on an actual pc using dos (e.g., 486 with windows 3.1)

as for a patch to allow it to work on pc, i've found nothing so far, other than dosbox or some other weird progs

i mean, anyone who would watch my run would know i'm not cheating, i'll even not use the timescale to speed up slow parts (even though that is an in-game feature)

i even know my time would get smashed by alot here, and would even hope someone does a better run, so i can watch it Cheesy (and learn)

TASvideos developed a rerecording patch for DOSbox, which is why it's categorised as an emulator. It sucks, but the logic's sound.

A possible solution would be to set up your PC to dual-boot with Win98SE or another 9x-series OS, or even DOS itself (though in that case you'd have to screencap with an external device).

well, being you can record your missions during the game using the in-game camera, couldn't i supply those files as maybe proof i didn't cheat?
Hell is where the heart is.
Hmmm. That sounds plausible. What format does it save them in?  I assume you have to play back in TIE Fighter.

That's really no different to what we do for Quake.

If the demo recording is sound then I guess recapturing afterwards in (whatever) for viewing purposes would be okay.

Ah! But how to verify that the recording wasn't done in DOSBox with rerecords??? :-D

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
record yourself playing using a camera, oh wait, you could replay the mission and press buttons Tongue
I used to be athiest until I realized I was God.
I think VMWare or Parallels or a simliar app couple do it (allows you to virtualize an entire PC on your computer, then you specify whatever hardware you want, cpu speed, ram, etc, and install whatever OS you choose).

I know Vmware is unneccesarily expensive if you don't torrent it, so that may be out.

Without using dosbox though, it becomes exceedingly difficult.
Even if SDA won't accept it officially, I'd love to see this run done on DosBOX and posted onto the forums here.  It would certainly be worth the downloads, if you ask me.

the camera recordings are in a xxxxx.clp format (x's being what i title the video when i save), which i'm sure is specific to this game. But one could transfer those files to be viewed by someone else with tie-fighter, to which, for verification purposes, i would be more than happy to send to the fellas of sda

come to think of it, the parts where i have to just sit there for 20 minutes waiting on some Tug to capture a Tie Defender, the recorded run would have the 4X time, but the playback would still have the normal time (which of course the verifiers can fast forward and all kinds of stuff when viewing the file in the 'Film Room' of the game, including the readouts of all the commands i use, just as you'd see them in the video), in fact, at the end of each mission the video will show me saving and naming the file

or, if someone can tell me how to play the game that doesn't involve money or anything illegal, please do tell
