Fire Emblem?
I'm planning on doing a speedrun for this (Tony Hawk undgerground, if you didn't recognise the abbreviation), as I said, on Normal. I'm going to use the Gamecube version, although that dosn't make any difference, and it'll be around 9 Segments, unless I change my mind halfway through.

At the moment, I've been practicing the first segment (chapters 1-3, or New Jersy), and I got a time of around 7:28, but I'm fairly certain I can get that down to 7 minutes.

So anyway, would anyone be interested in a speedrun of this, and does anyone know any good time saving tips?

Edit: Also, would I have to do the last chapter. If you've already completed the game once, the cutscene at the end of chaper 26 is different, and you complete the game there. So... do you think I'd have to do it, or not?

For the first speedrun of a game Radix will generally only accept a run during the first run of a game, so basically your gonna have to do that hellish goal in chapter 26. I was going to do a run of this game awhile ago so if you want to check out strategys etc. go here: http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=consoles_newer;action=display;num=1122346072;start=0

Awesome, I'm interested. I haven't beaten the game and it would be cool to see how it ends (got near the end till the nOObness kicked in). Wish you luck!

I remember my time for New Jersey on the X-box was around 5 minutes or so. I only counted the goal times and such, not all the dialog and random things. Only when I was moving or completing goals. You may be timing the entire thing (when you first talk to Eric and do all those jumping drills and such). That 5 minute run had some mistakes in it too, if I remember correctly. I'm a Halo runner at the moment, but I'll break away from Halo and finish my T.H.U.G. run some day. But for the moment, I wish you luck on your run. My run was on Too Easy, so maybe that gave me a little edge ;).

EDIT: If you want, I could plug the game back in, and give you strategies and such, if you want to attempt an all out run. I'd be happy to share secrets.

Fire Emblem?
PoCari: Well, that was 7:30 from loading New Jersy, to saving in New York. I got that down to 7:00 (but that was only from the home sweet home... cutscene to saving), and that had about 10 seconds of mistakes, as far as I can see.

Edit: Ah, I didn't see that you did it on too easy. That also explains the low time. But... making mistakes on too easy...  Tongue

Also, one thing is that i'm using a PAL version, but I doubt it'll make a difference.

Rjbcc: Yeah, i'm not too concerned about chapter 27, it only takes around 1 minute if your fast (I guess, havn't done it in aeons), but thanks for the topic, I'll check it out.

Zhegan: Well, i'm afraid you're not going to see how it ends, seeing as I skip all the cutscenes Tongue
but you do still get to see the 'race' which is chapter 27, which is pretty cool.

Either way I'm downloading this run. It'll be nice to have a Tony Hawk title on here

I got a 6:35ish time (if memory serves) doing exactly that on Too Easy. And of course, that run had mistakes in it. I always see mistakes in my stuff, even if they're incredibly insignificant. I could lower New Jersey to 5:30, if everything I wanted to do turned out beautifully. By SDA timing, that could realistically be a 3 to 4 minute run =D!

Too Easy doesn't really explain my low time. I could probably get a "Sick" time of 6:35 if I really tried. It's pretty much the same. But anyways, enough of that. I might be getting a capture card soon, and I could make little videos of shortcuts.
Fire Emblem?
Yeah, that would be a good idea.

Anyway, which goals do you do? I think I've found the optimal goals for the first segment (ch. 1: not the revert goal w/ Erik, ch. 2 not the best line goal, ch. 3 not the bum goal (although my timing shows that they 2 options are very close)), but mabey one or 2 are better.

Also, on the collecting scrap metal goal, do you think the fastest method is to follow the same route as the very first goal, or another route?

Quote:
New Jersey route
First stage
Help Eric
Walk Charles
Get in tight with the street warriors
Flyers for Muska Demo
Impress Muska (FINAL)

Second stage
Demo the new playground setup
Impress Shawn
Impress Joey
Get the stolen items back from the dealers (FINAL)

Third stage
Get the scrapmetal for the tombstone maker
Get access to the train station
Impress the bratty kid
Rescue Eric (FINAL)

I was using the "View Goals" menu for a lot of these, but I remember finding a nice route where I didn't have to use View Goals as much. If I remember correctly, you can Impress Shawn, then immediately Impress Joey. Haven't played the game in awhile, so I wouldn't be able to remember a lot of View Goals "tactics" you could say.

As for the scrap metal, you have your skateboard for that, so that could definately be used to your advantage. I remember trying to go off the fence, and do a Boneless off that little jump, so you get enough height to reach the power line. From there, you could jump off, and get the first piece of scrap metal (which would be the first skateboard part you get at the beginning). From there, you could jump to the second, skateboard to the other pieces. You can gap the alley and get that metal faster. After that, I was thinking of grinding on the roof very fast, then jumping for the last piece of scrap metal on the house. That'd be cool if you could pull that off =O
Fire Emblem?
Yeah, I guess I'll do that (or somthing similar) in my run.

Also, it looks like the missions you do are the same as my ones, so whatever.
Also I was doing a run in which i skated to all the goals so that could change my times if you go through the start menu to your goals. I also made a word document with a rough time for every goal. If you want it I can email it to you or something just say so.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
This game pissed me off so much. Had some challenges that just always seemed impossible/unrealistic. Some you could skip in the scope of the story, but still. Damn. And I never could beat that last level with the race through the whole town. The jump up to the powerlines, and then the jump from the bridge to the other powerlines (if I made it past the first set) always stopped me.

I'd definately watch if this run gets posted.
Fire Emblem?
Rj: No thanks, but thanks for the offer

Juncti: Normally, I climb the ladder near the second power line- it takes a few seconds longer, but you get 2 mins (or 4/1.5 depending on difficulty), so it dosn't matter.
Of cource, seeing as this is a speedrun, i'm not going to be able to do that Sad

And incase anyone's wondering, I havn't posted for a while because I just got a new game (Donkey konga 2 (and it was a free gift from a magazine subscription :P)), and i've been playing that alot. But I will get this run done sometime, even if not until August
Fire Emblem?
Okay, new problem: How do you record onto VCR? I know you have to connect up some wire to the VCR, but... well, I'm kinda stumped Sad

Incedentally, I am practicing the run again, and I'll be able to start on segment 2 as soon as I record segment one... which should be soon, hopefully.
This is from the FAQ, it's a good idea to read through it, its very informative.

So how do I record my run?
For console games, the recommended method is to simply hook up your console's output to a DVD recorder and record it. You should use SP speed for best quality. For Game Boy [Advance] games, use the Game Boy Player GCN addon, and set the screen size to Normal with filter set to Sharp for best picture. A VCR also works, but the quality won't be as good (again, use SP speed).
If you have your own capture card, you can try to digitize the runs yourself. Please see Nate's FAQ for detailed instructions on how to do it. You should be prepared to send a one-minute quality test file to Radix before processing the entire run. Runs with no sound, horribly loud (overpeaked) sound, or mixed in music are not acceptable. Web cam or digital camera recordings are not accepted: record only with a video in capture card.

For PC games, you'll need software that captures the playing as you go. Unfortunately, for older DOS-based games there's no reliable way to record them yet unless you can output to a VCR. Commonly used software for newer games include FRAPS and CamTasia.

That is a bitchin' FAQ. After that, it could mention there's ports to some DOS games that allows them to be run through windows, thus enabling the possibility of FRAPs. I think there's a way to run DOS games in windows without a port anyways. My older brother showed it to me once, but I've long since forgotten how he did it.

But anywho, the FAQ is basically saying to take the Yellow, White and Red coloured wire that comes out of your Gamecube (X-box, PlayStation, N64), and putting that wire into your VCR. There'll be yellow, white and red holes in the front of your VCR, and you simply put 'em in there, slap a tape in, and start recording. But with VCRs, there's usually yellow white and red holes in the back of the VCR. I've fiddled with about 4 VCRs, and the holes you're looking for are more often than not in the front of the VCR. When you plug those into the VCR, your VCR is basically projecting your game onto your TV. You may have to switch to the "VCR video" (video 1, video 2), depending if you have that kind of TV. Then yeah, tape in, press record, go nuts.

I'm hoping I get a capture card very soon, and when I do, I'll post little tidbit methods and shortcuts that will help you out. Hell, I may even tape my routes, and routes through the goals =)

EDIT: Oh, and as for SP (slow play), that means 2 hours of good quality. There'll be a button somewhere on your remote that says "SP/SLP." You want it to say SP on your screen ;P

Fire Emblem?
RJBCC: Yeah, I read that. But I was tired, and didn't understand what it meant (I was thinking that I don't have any output for my GC :P). But thanks for posting that, it makes sence now.

PoCari: Thanks for making that clear. I already was going to use SP (as I said, I read the FAQ), but... well, whatever. I'm hoping the quality will be good enough, seeing as these aren't exactly the highest quality tapes (They're from a 5 pack costing £5, so they're £1 tapes), but I can get 3 hours SP on them, so they should be alright.

Edit: I've also been trying segment 2 (Manhatten), and I think I've found the fastest objectives. Chapter 6 is a tough choice, since I think that catching the thieves would be fast if I get a good route, but... well, I have trouble finding all 5 in 4 minutes, so thats gonna be a helluva lot of fun...
XXY
Manhatten is probably my favorite level. Some goals piss me off, because they give you the illusion that they're faster than another goal, and they make you go insane because of it. Take that stolen skateboard route for example. I thought about that goal instead of another one, and decided to stick with the one I chose (can't remember). It still irks me to this day @_@;

I'll dig up my Manhatten route later. Seeing Manhatten from an insane speedrun perspective, the route needs a lot of revising, so I'll do that when I decide to take this up as a project. I remember how to do the taxi goal really fast. Jump over the cab, do a trick. Get off your board, jump back over the taxi, do a trick, repeat repeat.

There's also ways to get across Manhatten in a matter of seconds, but these are pretty hard maneuvers to pull off perfectly in a single segment. When I take this up as a project again, I'll definately be using a lot more segments. If all of the chat bubbles and not-game play things were taken out, I would imagine this run landing around 24-25 minutes if I went absolutely crazy on this game. But for now, I'm living in my boring Halo world ^_^;
Fire Emblem?
Even better way of doing the burning taxi- jump it once, manual, go up the qtrpipe and do more tricks- so long as its one combo, they still count Smiley

On the matter of doing tricks in combos, the hold grind one is going to take a little luck to do- if i'm lucky, I'll get it in one combo, but i'll probably be able to do it in 2-3. I get it in 2 about fifty:fifty, so yeah.

Anywho, I posted that last message at school, but I'm home now, so i'm going to practice (and record) the first segment. After making a game. Yeah, I make them, and play them  Roll Eyes
Yeah that trick was very helpful. Also if i remember correctly you can do a set of tricks, caveman and then jump over the taxi and you should still get the gap.
Im on the internet!
God I almost finished this run, but 2 other people were doing it at the same time, and everyone was doing it a little bit different (difficulty, picking goals through menu, etc) so I just dropped it.  And then they never sent their in, so no one got to see anything.  Hopefully you finish yours, at which point Ill probably send in single levels from mine if theyre faster Cheesy
Fire Emblem?
Rj: Useful tip- very similar to what I do on impress Sean (Shaun? Shawn? whatever), but that might cut off a few seconds anyway

Prod: As I said, i'm going to finish this and send it in, even if it takes until Christmas...

Also, i've decided to stop practicing NY for now, as I rarely hit segment 1 perfectly anyway.
And, if i'm not too bored, i'm going to do a SS run afterwards.

What do you think would be neccicary in a 100% run? I'd have said all goals and 10/10 stats for everything, but... well, there is still gaps and hidden tapes... so...
Technically a 100% run would include all gaps. Radix said that as a general rule you would need to get anything that improves a players abilities, but things like maps wouldn't be required. This really doesn't apply to THUG or else all goals wouldn't be required.

Gaps don't improve abilities... do they?

Going by that, a 100% run is just getting 10/10 for all stats, but... well, Gaps simply take too long IMO, and no-one would memorise the locations of ALL of them.

Anywho, I just got another new game (M&L: SS), and i'm playing that at the moment, so i'm going to take another 3-4 day break  Roll Eyes

A run that includes anything to improve abilities is a very general rule for games that it applies to. THUG wouldn't be because then only stats and special trick slots would be included. Personally I believe a 100% run for this game would involve completing everything listed in the "Game Progress" section at the menu screen.
