Thinking about doing a Dragon Warrior III for GBC Speed Run. It would be segmented, likely only a few large segments.  I have never done a speed run for any game before. I was hoping I could get some feedback from you all on this idea.

I would start with 3 Agility fighters as they are the strongest class early on, and require no weapons to deal massive dmg. I would use them until I get to the 2nd castle where the 1st segment would end and the 2nd begin. the 2nd segment is the one I will have to repeat the most to make sure I properly do the glitch below.

I would use a glitch to level the Hero to level 99 by using the Pachisi Track Str glitch. See here for full glitch description "Use the Hero at any Pachisi Track. If you land on a space that lowers the Hero's STR stat by any amount, the next battle fought will instantly raise your level to 99. Only works on the Hero." -http://www.gamefaqs.com/gbc/450388-dragon-warrior-iii/cheats-

From that point on, I would dismiss my other 3 party members as they are no longer needed, and will likely slow combats down. I would use Repellent to avoid as many fights as I could.

Thoughts? Ideas? or Suggestions would be very welcomed : )
Thread title:
Neat. I'd probably watch it for entertainment value...

Remember that the use of segments means you have to optimize each segment as best you can -- in a random battle RPG like especially, especially which such a glitch where you don't need to fight anything, you want to have as few as absolutely possible. Having more segments means less having to do segments over and over to get fewer.
If there's any where you can save quickly even if it means going an extra 30 seconds out of your way, it may be beneficial to do it to cut down on randomness.
There are 2 ways of saving in this game, one is at a castle by talking to a King, this is the "proper" way as you can select what file to save in.
Another is a save anywhere, but when you start again, you have to start from the quick save spot. But once you do the quick save is gone so it only allows you to retry a part once.
the only reason I thinking of segmented is to use the Pachisi Track Str glitch. It is a mini games based of dice rolls, and I wont always get my Str reduced. I could always do single segment, but the Pachisi Track Str glitch would allow for a much faster time as I dont need to fight mobs for exp anymore. I am only limited by random encounters and how fast I can get to each boss.
Willing to teach you the impossible
What personality do you plan on using for your hero? Will your hero be M or F? What gear do you plan on picking up and when and where? The field save does not allow any retries for anything, so that is not an option. I am very interested in this as I was also planning a sing segment of this game using the same glitch (note about the glitch, it works with hero, warrior, sage and I think one more). Be sure to set up your experience right. You want to get the STR reduced and fight in the parchisi before it ends. So this will be a hard run to produce luck wise. I dont know how I feel about 3 fighters... but it is prolly the best/easiest to get yourself going. Might want to consider a cleric as the dungeon just before the second castle is REALLY hard in a speedrunning setting (it is the main reason I stopped). Also be sure to configure your party proper and know who needs to go where. I recommend stating everything you are planning on doing here in the thread so others can give ideas on how to better it. I mean everything. Weapons, character levels and at what point, weapons, armor, save locations, and anything else you can think of. I will not lie and say this run will be easy. Because it wont be. The game is large and you have many many options to consider. I know the game well so I know I can help you. I believe Darkwing Duck also knows the game very well, but he knows the NES verion (very slight differences).

Needless to say, I will be following this thread and your progress.
Heidrage, if your planning SS, you could use the SFC DQ3 route to base off of. There was an old SDA thread where the runner translated and while the GBC is higher risk (retreat rate feels lower, and the troll for one of the 6 orbs seems to crit quite a bit more.) the route would essentially be the same. I played through it a few times and a fast run should be less than 4hrs. Using a cleric is just a waste of a slot since 2 herbs will heal you if you get low and vitality seeds give you the health to run your way thru the second dungeon. I know you grab 3 seeds, and sell them for 2-3 wayvern wings 1 or 2 antidotes, and all the herbs you can carry and you go all the way to magic key. That should fund your adventures until your doing the 6 orbs.
Willing to teach you the impossible
The second dungeon was just too hard to run away from everything. And yes, that troll crits just about every turn...

But thinking realistically, The fighters speed should work out, but i never got luck with it... like ever.

Wow good post Heidrage. I haven't planned that much yet. I only just came up with the idea the other day when I started a new file up. I found the glitch by mistake and went to see if it was known or not, it was Sad
But I saw that and thought to myself that it is a great way to get a speed run done. Came here to see if this had been done yet and it hasn't for GBC, I think there is a single seg for the original DW3. I need to play through the game a few times to get it all down, as it has been years since I last played this game.

As for personality I'll need to test how playing trough the game feels at 99. being so high, it might not matter. But if it does Ill test Tough, Valiant, and Solitary. M for the hero.
Or perhaps Sexy as a F. As it has the largest gains to stats overall.
Willing to teach you the impossible
I was rolling with Valiant and Male, but I never seemed to have enough MP. But I am sure I was not planning my item inventory proper. I can think of a few things right now that could have helped in that area. You can also get Lewd for Male, but I dont know if that can be a starting personality. It would be hands down the best most likely. Never played with Solitary.

Tough is hands down the best, but it takes FOREVER to get it as a starting personality. You could use a Toughness but then you would have to go out of your way to get it before Parchisi, making it very not worth it. That is why I went with Valiant, very fast opening scenario, and high attack power.

I also made sure I picked up the Spiny Whip before I left the starting area. I would keep it on me for bosses such as... I forget the names... The bandit guy that stole the crown. I could use 1 or 2 attacks to kill off the goons and save a turn over using the Steel Sword using 3 attacks. I would recommend picking up the Expel Shield in your rout as well. It is the second strongest shield in the game. Once you get your fathers helmet, never take it off. It provides resistances to status effect (poison and such). The Starry should never be removed either or else you will be beat in almost every fight in terms of speed. So you have your Helmet, Shield, and Accessory covered. Your armor (Blade perhaps? Many enemies use spells later in the game though...), and weapons will need to be planned out proper.

You are going to be strapped for money during the run as well. Making it hard to buy better equipment. Plan out EVERY gold you get. There is a FAQ somewhere that shows the rewards for each boss fight, that should be a great start.

Also, after getting change staff, use it to get some extra MP recovery rings. That can save time over resting in some areas (late in the game).
Here is a great list of personality types and the total bonus or total minus each one gives. http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Dragon_Warrior_III/Personality
Sexy looks so nice, but I cant start with it
Willing to teach you the impossible
Note that they will not be accurate. When using the parchisi glitch your starts will be lower compared to if you were leveling normally.
Hey, that thread Hsanrb mentioned?  That was me who made it, and I've got it right here!

https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/i_am_dissecting_the_singlesegment_route_that_a_japanese_speedrunner_took_for_dragon_warrior_iii_t.html

Do be aware that there may be some inconsistencies, and in fact, a more updated route would probably look more like this...

Dragon Quest III Remix:

(Get Lazy personality for Hero since that scenario and action is fastest, pump everyone with Vitality Seeds, and swap Hero and Warrior's weapons.  Other than that, no changes)

Reeve: Sell your worthless stuff and buy 9 Herbs and 4 Warpwings for your bag, 9 Herbs for your Mage, and 8 Herbs for your Thief.

(Monster Tactics: One shot the monsters you know you can even over more dangerous monsters.  Run from groups with over 4 monsters.  Focus on MothWings above other monsters).

Tower of Najima: Don't use Inn, and rearrange your formation to Wr/Th/Mg/Hr once you level up three people.  Warp to Reeve.

Reeve: Get Magic Ball, Wisdom Seed, and Antidote.  Warp out of Reeve.  Don't use Inn.

(Monster Tactics: Run from Magicians.  And everything once you enter Temptation Cave)

Temptation Cave: Don't get any chests and take right path.

Romaly: Use Inn and walk out.  Go to Ashalam, get Poison Moth Powder, sell it, and get Bronze Shield for Warrior.  Revive dead people, and go to Pyramid.

Pyramid: Trip switches, get the Magic Key, Seed, enter stairs to reset encounters, get Flashy Clothes, and get outta there.  Go to Isis Castle.

Isis Castle: Get top two chests in east room, all chests in left room, then Wizard Ring from Queens room.  Rearrange party to it's previous formation,  warp out to Isis, and walk into town.

Isis: Sell Flashy Clothes, Tiara, Ruby Ring, Wizard Ring, and Copper Sword.  Then buy Steel Sword for Warrior, Iron Armor for Warrior and Hero, Iron Shield for Warrior and Hero, then Iron Helmet for Hero.  Then buy 36 WarpWings, 4 Holy Waters and Antidotes, and 45 Herbs for bag.  Revive dead people.  Get seed by well, give Travelers Cloth to Thief, and warp out of Isis.  Go to Isis Castle.

Isis Castle: Get Starry Ring.  Warp to Aliahan.

Aliahan: Raid all Magic Key chests in Aliahan.  Give Silk Robe and Rune Staff to Mage, Hero Ring to Thief, use all seeds on Hero, and equip the Starry Ring on him.  Warp to Romaly.

Romaly: Walk to Portoga, get in battle in forest a bit north of mountains (presumably to reset encounter rate), and enter Portoga.

Portoga: Buy Steel Whips for Hero and Thief, talk to King, raid treasure room, use seed on Hero, then warp to Romaly.

(Monster Tactics: Fight everyone)

Romaly: Walk to Kanave, going into Pachisi to reset encounters.

Kanave: Walk out, and go to Tower of Shanpane.

Tower of Shanpane: Meet Kandar, then hop off right side after pitfall.  Have the Hero trade Accesories with the Thief, and make sure Mage is at max HP.

(Kandar Boss Fight: Have Hr/Wr/Th attack Goon as Mage casts Icebolt, then have Hr/Wr/Mg attack Goon as Thief heals those who need it most.  Very straightforward from here).

Skip Crown, and Warp to Ashalam

Ashalam: Rest at Inn and go into Norud's Cave, and have Hero switch Accessories with Thief.  Walk to Barharata.

(Monster Tactics: Use Expel on Madhounds, Icebolt on HeatClouds, and focus on HunterFlys over other monsters.  Run from battles with more than three groups)

Barharata: Sell Tatoo and Rune Staff, then buy three Magic Shields for Hr/Th/Mg, talk to Gupta, warp out, and head on out to Kidnappers Cave.

Kidnappers Cave: Before boss, have Hero and Thief switch accesories, use seeds on Hero, and have Mage equip Mist Staff.  Make sure Thief and Mage are full of Herbs and bulldoze Goons.  Rescue the couple, make formation Wr/Th/Hr/Mg AND FIGHT!!

(Kandar Boss Fight: Go all out on first round, with the Mage casting Fireball, then after that, have the Thief heal as necessary as the Mage uses Icebolt.  After the Goons are down, have the Mage use Upper on the Thief and Warrior, then use Herbs on the others as they pound away at Kandar.)

Have the Mage cast Outside, and warp to Barharata.

Barharata: Have the Thief and Hero switch accesories, get the Pepper, then warp to Portoga.

Portoga: Rest at Inn and get ship.  Sail to Soo.

(Monster Tactics: Run from all monsters)

Soo: Get Thunder Staff in front of well, buy Tiara for Mage, and Invisibility Herb for Warrior.  Use Holy Water and warp to Aliahan.

Aliahan: Go east and into Temptation Cave, then further east to Pirates Cove.

Pirates Cove: Raid all chests and warp to Reeve.

Reeve: Sail north to Jipang.

Jipang: Sail into Dharma.

Dharma: Warp to Portoga.

Portoga: Sail north into Edinbear.

Edinbear: Use Invisibility Herb, raid Dandy Clothes and Party Dress.  Give Mage Thunder Staff and equip Party Dress on Thief.  Use seeds on Hero, get Vase of Drought, then warp to Soo.

Soo: Sell Warrior's Iron Armor and Dandy Clothes, then buy Poison Needle for Thief and Mage.  Then buy 9 Poison Moth Powders for Thief, 7 for Hero, 9 for Mage, then 9 for bag.  Then warp to Dharma.

Dharma: Go north to Tower of Garuna.

(Monster Tactics: Use Poison Moth Powders on Metal Slimes, Hawks, and Moths in Metal Slime battles and leave at least some monsters alive so the Slime won't run.  But also make sure you can rid yourself of as many monsters as you can without having them run.  Use Expel on Sky Dragons in groups, Icebolt in solo encounters, and Poison Needles on Metal Slimes, whips on all else.  Let Warrior die. Enemy priority Eagles>Moths>Nevs>Rams>Apes)

Tower of Garuna: Get Silver Tiara, equip it on the Thief, and give the Warrior's Stee
l Sword to the Hero without equipping it for anything else but Metal Slimes.  Restock characters with Poison Moth Powders when needed.  After getting the Thief up to Level 20, change formation to Th/Hr/Wr/Mg, get Zen Book, cast Outside, then warp to Dharma.

Dharma: Class change Thief to Sage and warp to Jipang.

Jipang: Have the Sage swap accesories with the Hero, give Starry Ring and Silver Tiara to Mage,  and the Thunder Staff to Sage.  Go north to Muor.

(NOTE: From now on, you're expected to use Tiptoe every 22 seconds to avoid random encounters).

Muor: Get Leather Kilt, and go north to Final Key shrine to get it.  Fill Sage up with Poison Moth Powders and warp to Dharma.

Dharma: Save, then go to Tower of Garuna.

Tower of Garuna: Go resume grinding, and as soon as you kill a Metal Slime in a battle, try to kill the Hero before it ends.  Once the Mage hits Level 21, warp outside, then warp to Dharma.

Dharma: Class change the Mage to a Warrior.  Equip the Starry Ring on the Sage and warp to Barharata.

Barharata: Sail south and a bit to the west to get to Lancel.

(Monster Tactics: Run from all fights)

Lancel: Get the Blue Orb and Terra Armor.  Warp outside, then warp to Portoga.

Portoga: Sail south and revive Hero and Warrior at 2nd shrine.  Then go to Tedanki.

Tedanki: Get Green Orb and rest at Inn.  Get Darkness Lamp and Black Hood, then warp to Edinbear.

Edinbear: Sail west into the shrine, take one of the side teleporters, then go to Samanao, avoiding mountains and using the Darkness Lamp before entering.

Samanao: Go to Samanao Cave.

Samanao Cave: Get seed on 2nd floor, get Mirror of Ra, then warp out and warp to Samanao.

Samanao: Sell the (F) Warrior and Hero's Magic Shields, the Party Dress, the Sage's Steel Whip, the Silk Dress, the Steel Sword, the Black Hat, and however Poison Moth Powders you need to in order to buy the Zombie Sword for the (M) Warrior and Dragon Shields for everyone but the Sage.  Equip the Terra Armor to the (M) Warrior.  Give two Herbs and Mist Staff to the (M) Warrior, fill up the (F) Warrior with Herbs, use seed on Hero, then use Darkness Lamp.  Find seed in Castle garden, change formation to Hr/Wr(M)/Sg/Wr(F) and go beat Boss Troll up.

(Boss Troll Boss Fight: Parry with the Hero and have the (M) Warrior use the Mist Staff until it works as the Sage and (F) Warrior use Increase.  Use the Sage to HealMore as needed until seven Increases on the party.  Use Bikill on the (M) Warrior then Hero, cast Sap on Boss Troll.  It is once you've established all this that you can finally start wailing on the Boss Troll as the Sage heals and uses Bikilled attacks, and the (F) Warrior uses Bikill on the Sage and then Icebolt for the rest of the fight).

Get Change Staff, use Holy Water, and then warp to Kanave.

(NOTE: From now on, the notes assume that you're using the "Heal Everyone of All HP" command)

Kanave: Enter Noaniels, then go to Elf Village.

Elf Village: Change into slime or dwarf, sell the Steel Whip, Terra Armor and Thunder Staff.  Then buy two Wizard Rings and two Sleep Staffs for bag.  Then give both Warriors the Sleep Staves in place of Poison Moth Powders, and warp to Edinbear.

Edinbear: Sail to Sailor's Thigh High Bone island, using the Lamp of Darkness once the Holy Water effect runs out.  Get Sailor's Bone, use Holy Water, and warp to Romaly.

Romaly: Enter Pirate ship.

Pirate Ship: Get seed from lower left pot, and the Locket of Love.  Warp to Noaniels.

Noaniels: Sail east, using the Lamp of Darkness after 22 seconds.  Then enter the shrine on the way to Gaia Sword cave, then enter the cave itself.  Get Gaia Sword, use last Holy Water, then warp to Ashalam.

(NOTE: From now on, these notes expect you to use the Lamp of Darkness after 22 seconds of sailing, or right outside caves to skip battles).

Ashalam: Go to Necrogond Cave/

Necrogond Cave: Get Sword of Thunder and Swordedge Armor.  Give Swordedge Armor to (M) Warrior and equip the Hero with the Sword of Thunder.  After getting the Silver Orb, warp to Jipang.

Jipang: Go into Cave of Orochi.

Cave of Orochi: Go fight Orochi.

(Orochi Boss Fight: Attack with Hero, use the Sleep Staff then attack with (M) Warrior, Sap then Surround with Sage, and Bikill on Hero and (M) Warrior with (F) Warrior.  If Orochi wakes up, use Sleep and Sleep Staff with your support characters as your melee warriors tear into Orochi.  Otherwise, have those two attack as well)

Give Orochi Sword to (F) Warrior, heal up, change formation to Sg/Hr/(M)Wr/(F)Wr, use Wizard Ring on Sage twice, then fight Orochi again.

(Orochi Boss Fight: Don't bother with Sleep this time, but just have the Sage cast Surround until that lands, and follow it up with Sap.  Have the (F) Warrior cast Bikill on herself as well as the other two this time, and show Orochi who's boss).

Warp to Aliahan.

Aliahan: Deposit your (M) Warrior and register a Merchant.  Get him to New Town.

New Town: Keep entering in and out of it (cast Lamp of Darkness at time of revolt) until you get your hands on the Yellow Orb.  Warp to Aliahan.

Aliahan: Get your (M) Warrior back and warp to Noaniels.

Noaniels: Change formation to Hr/(M)Wr/(F)Wr/Hr, travel to the continent where Lamia is and free her from her egg.  Get Leaf of the World Tree and  travel to the Castle of the Dragon Queen.

Castle of the Dragon Queen:  Get the Light Orb and warp to Isis.  Travel to Baramos's Castle.

(Monster Tactics: Run from all except monsters susceptable to Sleep)

Baramos Castle:  Start using Herbs for healing again, use Stepguard when needed, and raid trio of chests.  Equip Cursed Helmet to Hero, equip the Demon Axe on (F) Warrior, then equip Orochi Sword to the Sage.  Make sure that the (M) Warrior has the Mist Staff and fight Baramos.

(Baramos Boss Fight: First, use Ironize, then have the Hero and Sage cast Stopspell while both of the Warriors use the Sleep Staves.  After that, have the Sage use Surround, the Hero use Sleep, the (F)  Warrior use SpeedUp, and the (M) Warrior use his Sleep Staff.  After that, have the (F) Warrior start using Bikill, have the Hero and (M) Warrior cast the Sleep spell again, and have the Sage heal one of your guys (since Baramos seems to have a fixed pattern, it's probably necessary).  After that, have the Sage use Sap while everyone else casts the Sleep spell.  After that, have the (F) Warrior use SpeedUp again, and have everyone else cast Sleep.  Have the Hero use Ironize twice.  After that, have the Hero restore his MP with the Wizard Ring as everyone else casts Sleep again

It is here that the runner finally managed to land Sleep on Baramos, and after that, he had the female Warrior cast Bikill on (I think) everyone while the Sage used SpeedUp until her turn.  Anyone who hasn't been Bikilled yet should cast Sleep if Baramos wakes up.  Oh yes, and I believe the (M) Warrior should use the Mist Staff on Baramos if he has been put to sleep but not Stopspelled, and if the Warrior hasn't been Bikilled)

Warp to Aliahan.

Aliahan: Give (M) Warrior's Sleep and Mist Staves to the Sage.  Get through cutscenes, and warp to Isis.

Isis: Fly to Giana Pit and jump into Alefgard.  Once you're there, sail to Tantegel.

Tantegel: Get Stones of Sunlight as well as the seed in that room, and warp out.  Walk into Rocky Mountain Cavern.

(Monster Tactics: Run from everything except single monster groups you can easily put to sleep.  Also put Kragacles to sleep before running from them.  Finally, use Expel on yellow skeletons)

Rocky Mountain Cavern: Raid both pieces of cursed equipment from it, warp outside, and travel to Haukesness.

(NOTE: It seems the "Heal to Max" command is being used again)

Haukesness: Get Oricon and warp to Tantegel.

Tantegel: Sail to Kol, entering a shrine along the way.

Kol: Give Hero Ring to (M) Warrior, sell both pieces of cursed equipment, the Zombie Killer, and Oricon.  Warp out of the town and re-enter it to buy the Sword of King's for your Hero, Blade Armor for your female Warrior, and a Water Robe and Sage Staff for your Sage.  Find the Pixy Flute.  Warp out of Kol and go to Rubiss Tower.

Rubiss Tower: Pilfer two stat seeds in the Electric Floor room full of those weird arrows, and also pilfer the Armor of Radiance.  Equip that on the Hero and talk to the statue.  Warp to Haukesness.

Haukesness: Sail to the shrine of that one lady who spoke to you in the dream at the beginning of the game, and talk to her.  Visit the shrine you see on the way to Rimulder and talk to that priest also.  Then go straight to Zoma's Castle.

(Monster Tactics: Same as last time, except use Infermost and Snowblast against Dragons.  Also, use Sleep Staff on GranTitans, and also Bikill on you're fighters when you face them.  Against those yellow skeletons with wings, use Expel.  Against those Gargoyle things with whips, use Stopspell, and against those green lions, use Sleep).

Zoma's Castle:
That's a great guide. I will hopefully be doing it as a lvl 99 so some of it will be different, but either way a bunch of good info!

I've never done a Solo quest before in DW3, I know it can be done as it's been done before. I assume lvl 99 is high enough for the Hero to walk over all the content in the game.

I also have never done a speed run, I feel this will be a long project for me to do over time : )
Just did some testing, It is indeed possible to get Sexy as a starting personality for females. So that is likely what I will start with.
Willing to teach you the impossible
How?
Hehe my secret.

Nah I'm JK

So far I've only had this work with a certain order of questions. I think it has to be a specific starter question so here is what I did exactly.

Female Name A, Real name A, birth 1/1, START QUESTION Does Victory come easy > Yes > Do you prefer magic to a sword? > No > Do you find it tiring to be with people you dont know well? > No > If you make a mistake, do you tend to shrug it off? > Yes > If your opinion differs from someone else's would you rather not argue about it? > No > Do you enjoy physical activity? > Yes > Do little things bother you? > Yes > Do you put your thoughts into action right away? > No > Do you get busy on one thing and lose sight of other goals? > No > Do you hold anything precious? > Yes > This leads to The Queen's Treachery. From here listen to the Queen, go downstairs and listen to the King, Don't talk to the king, go to the duke in the right room, and answer yes to both his questions and leave via the stairs to the south. This will give the Lewd personality, however you picked a girl and girls cant be lewd, when you load into the world you will have the Sexy personality instead.

Willing to teach you the impossible
Note about the questions, you can manipulate them to get the scenario you want no matter what your starting question is.

Awesome. I memorized how to get Valiant... so I guess I can memorize this one too.

Edit: Cool, where I go off for Valiant is the same spot for this. So I just need to learn 3 answers.

The scinarios are all based on answering a specific question the right way. I answer questions till I get on the path for the end question of "Do you believe in gods?" and answer that one "Yes". Same path except on the question "Do little things bother you?" I answer no and that sends me to the the gods question after one more question (I think it is one more). The first few questions asked lead you to a string where you head for a specific path, but you can change the path by answering specific questions a specific way. I always answer the questions the same way till I get the "key" question that gives me the path I want. For sexy, it seems it is the combination of "Do you like physical activity?" and "Do little things bother you?". Answer questions till you get one of them, then follow your path to get the Queens Treachery.

... does that make any sense?
Edit history:
loki1300: 2013-03-06 09:05:38 am
Yes make sense, there is a flow chart on the web somewhere with all the questions and which ones lead to what. I followed that to get Sexy as a personality type, which is nice because I thought it wasn't able to be started with.
