Sleeping Terror
Well, now that my Beyond Good & Evil run is done, I need something new to run. How many of you would like to see runs for the Thief games?

I'll be doing each level separately, without buying anything from the shop. Also, I use the level skip to access the few levels "connected" to a previous one, so I start with the default items. This way people can compete on individual levels.

I only have a copy of Thief II at the moment, so that's what I'm starting with. I'll probably do Thief Gold instead of plain Thief I, because it has more levels.

The levels differ greatly on different difficulties, thanks to the varying objectives, so it's worth doing all three difficulties. To make it easy on myself, I'll be starting with Normal. (Return to the Cathedral and Sabotage at Soulforge will be FUN on Expert.)

I've already done the first level of T2 on Normal. There's not much you can do for speed, since you have to wait for Basso. But I did find that using the whistle after he finishes his walking around at the beginning is faster than using it immediately. I tried to not be too boring while waiting for him.

Thief II - Level 1 (Running Interference) - Normal - 2:52 (video down for lack of space)

One note about this video: Thief is a dark game. A really dark game. I'm using the default gamma, which is great for playing at night with the lights off. If you want to watch this video during the day, or on a monitor with poor brightness, I'd really recommend using a video player that can increase the gamma.

Oh, and one more thing... I don't have much webspace. So I won't be able to put up more than one small video at a time, unless someone offers to host them for me.

Thief 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games. I'm not sure if all three difficulties should be done (IMO, only the hardest should), but I'll watch everything anyway.

It's funny how you can leap onto the guards without them hearing anything. Are they completely deaf on Normal? I don't remember this being possible on Expert, but then again it's been a long time since I played the game..

Getting good Expert times will take a lot of practice, and I may as well start by doing the levels on Normal and Hard. I like all three difficulties, so I'm doing them all.

I'm pretty sure that leaping doesn't make any noise until you hit the ground, by which time those guards are unconscious. And that dirt floor is pretty quiet. I doubt it'd be quite so easy on wood, or that godforsaken marble. I just like having that "While Airborne:" on the stats screen.

Yeah, I suppose it is justified to do it on all difficulties. The later levels on expert are very complicated and will require some amount of planning. I will be watching this one. Good luck.
hi, yeah, i've been lurking here, and i'd just like to take this moment to say i'm pleasantly surprised at Thief1/2 having runs done! i always thought it would be cool and interesting to see them run, but i assumed that maybe people all just said "omg no thief is a SNEAKING game you don't run it!!11" heheh. looking forward to it  Smiley

Thief II - Level 2 (Shipping... and Receiving) - Normal - 2:51

This level is very nonlinear, as the main objective is simply to pick up 500 loot and get out. I think I have the fastest route, but someone more skilled could probably shave off several seconds just by playing better. I'm afraid I'm not very good at ego-shooters.

I remember spending HOURS just on that level, and you plow through it in less than 3 minutes. Very nice. Smiley Looking forward to more.
Hmm. I've been just creeping so far, but now it seems I have to come out and say hi.

"Hi."

I've been doing a run of Thief 2 on hard for over half a year now and since I'm really bad in finishing anything big I start it's not finished yet.
I've recorded everything but the last level using Fraps and here're the times:

3:00 - Running Interference (Basso's reaction time seems to have a lot of randomness...)
3:58 - Shipping... and receiving
2:16 - Framed (used elevatoring in the beginning. Probably my cleanest run on any map.)
2:21 - Ambush!
8:38 - Eavesdropping (long conversation...)
3:58 - First city bank and trust
3:53 - Blackmail
5:54 - Trace the courier
3:23 - Trail of blood
7:22 - Life of the party (did it in three segments because i just found it too impossible to do in one. 2 might have been possible though.)
6:57 - Precious cargo
4:23 - Kidnap
1:48 - Casing the joint
5:56 - Masks (did it in two segments again because of the high screwup-factor.)

I'm hoping for a sub 1:20:00 time If I ever get finished with Soulforge. And I think the runs will look completely different in most maps because I have more objectives on hard.

Did you record the stats screen at the end? I couldn't get fraps to work on it.

Also, what is this "elevatoring"?

Those look like pretty good times.
No. I didn't get farps to record in the menu screen either, but it's the only recorder i know of...

Elevatoring is a glitch in the game that allows you to get higher than you're supposed to by using certain items.

In Framed i used a scouting orb.

Oh. I forgot to mention that I used the loot I got from previous missions. A lot of the tricks I have used require items that you need to buy.
Thief/Thief 2....

Someone is finally running my 7th favorite franchise ever.  I would never do it myself because I generally suck at sneaking games (Less tippy toes, more stabbing!), but I am going to wish you the best of luck on such an endeavor.  I can't wait to see the finished product!
Sleeping Terror
To be honest, I'm getting kinda tired of doing this. All these glitches like elevatoring just seem... offputting. I find it hard to reach the level of quality I want with a keyboard and mouse - not my favorite control scheme, even if it is the most powerful for this sort of game. And I'm starting to get minor wrist pains from using a mouse too much again... so the thought of sinking a lot of time into a mouse-controlled game doesn't exactly appeal to me.

I don't think I'll be finishing this one. Sorry.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Drat...so close. Been waiting for Thief speedruns for a while. Ah well. Cry

I still want to see the 52 second level 1 of Thief 1...

How about Thief Deadly Shadow?

The game's both on PC and Xbox, so you could play with a controller.  Also, while DS isn't as good as Thief2, it's still one hell of a game!
I was planning to do a speedrun of Thief 1 on normal but I don't know how fast I am because I don't have anything to compare it with. I can do Lord Bafford's Manor in 49 seconds so if anyone knows if this is a good time please say. If it's good I'll carry on with the other levels.
