I'd find out who owns this apartment complex (if it is a company that owns several) and go through them first.  If that is not an option or failed, I would then contact the utilitites company providing the water to your complex and report a problem, and explain your situation.  However, they probably will need authorization from the management.

The other thing you could try is to call the police if it is above the decimal level for a noise violation.  Since the unit is property of the apartments, it is the management's fault and they would be cited.  If you kept racking up citations on them, they might find it cheaper to fix it or they may face jail time.

If that's not how it works, the other thing I would consider is to realistically find out what would happen if you bailed, and did not pay.  Perhaps a covert operation into the management building to find your file (if it is not on computer) to destroy it?  Okay, but seriously...I know from police...sometimes getting a "ticket" or "citation" in one city or state means it doesn't get reported outside the limits of the city or state.  Meaning...if you have no FINANCIAL tracking on your lease (Bank Account, Credit Card), the worst they could do is track you and send you bills, or make a mark on your credit record somehow.

Depending on what you value most...and outstanding fine that nobody will do anything about or a deduction on your credit ranking might be worth the price of getting free.

I don't know...perhaps consulting another adult on this situation besides a lawyer could help...
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Mabye contacting your local news or radio station would help.

if I may?

i love this site more than anything (i have roughly 16 gigs of low video quality speed runs) but, maybe a good idea would be to take down this site completely for a week, no submissions, no... anything, and allow yourself to gather yourself up and tackle this matter with one less thing on your mind.
Radix doesn't need to take down the site for a week. He can just back off from processing runs and stuff. He did make Strangeness an admin to keep from having to manage the forum. Saying that people should hold off from submitting runs for a while could help, but even so- they could just sit in the queue.

Hah. Half the work is just getting them there. That's why I've been turning them down completely and telling people try again in a month.

Really? I thought it was timing, verifying and uploading. Ok. You might want to put something in the submission info page that says you're not accepting runs for now.

Uploading is about two minutes work... and a lot of waiting.

Timing is only difficult for a small subset of games.

Verifying isn't my job! (except games i know and give a damn about...)

Getting the runs in the queue requires A) talking to people B) finding out what they did C) telling them how to mail it or setting up their access to my ftp.
PwNzRd!
And don't think we don't appreciate it.

What I would say is that whatever you do DO NOT let your credit history slide with this (just in case bailing out seems like a good option at any point). Take it from someone who knows an AWFUL lot about credit and what VERY REAL longterm problems things like defaults, CCJ's and arrears can do (such as prevent you from getting jobs in the future, and no, that's most certainly not a lie).

Your credit history is MUUUUUUCH more important than you could ever realise. A poor credit history can screw you up for a long time in ways that you couldn't imagine.

I hope you manage to sort this out asap.

Sorry, to revive this topic without a real reason of any sort, but I just wanted it to stay on the first page; I'm eager to hear how the battle is progressing.

Any good news, Radix?  Or maybe no news is good news... damn those old adages...

I don't know; I was trying to be clever.

Though, maybe no news means that Radix is busy making progress against the confounded landlords..?  We can always hope.

I looked at two apartments, one yesterday and one today. Both are about the same 30 minute walk to work as I have now. The first is a better location for getting out of the city fast and bus routes by a few minutes. The first is cheaper by about $30 a month even though I'd be paying a gas bill for heat instead of not at the other place. The first place was also recently redone and has a washer & dryer in the kitchen.

The only catch is that I didn't meet the roommate i'd be living with at either place. I decided since I'm probabably going to have to kill $2000 to get out of this shithole, I need to live with someone in a 2 bedroom to save money. It'll take me 10 months to break even.

I think i have the perfect solution

you have 100's of people who really like this site and care about your well being.

You can easily sculpt this fanbase into a massive army.

you shall take this massive army by the full moon light and vanquish the vile oppressors which are the dwelling demons.

I know about 10 or 20 Koreans.  Maybe we can organize a Zerg rush!! Kekekekeke!  Grin

In all seriousness, I hope you do get out of this mess with minimal damage, Radix.  And hopefully your new roommate is tolerable.

Those of you paying attention to my plight (nobody, apparently) would've realized that yesterday was the deadline I mentioned for paying 3 months rent to terminate the lease.

Since I haven't found an appropriate place to move to, with a roommate or without, I didn't pay it. So I'm stuck here until January 31 at least now, unless I do simply move out before then and stop paying the rent like my lawyer that I shoudn't have paid for told me to do.
I thought it was just a surprise party!
So you don't think the lawyer's advice was any good then? That's terrible... well I don't think I can express my sympathies in any way that hasn't already been stated here, but I feel for you. I can't imagine what it must be like trying to live in those conditions. Hang in there.
...
Man, I can't imagine having to live in a place like that. I wouldn't last one week without going absolutely insane. Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, but have you talked to the other people living in that building yet? Don't they hear that noise too?

Here's a totally crazy idea: If the noise comes from one place, like one wall, you could try nailing a big, thick wooly carpet to that wall. It should muffle the sound a little, making it a tiny bit more bearable. Of course, those carpets are not free. I don't know your situation very well (only what you've said in this thread), so this crazy idea may or may not be applicable.

For what it's worth, I hope all goes well in the end. Good luck!

That...that really. Sucks. I'm sorry, Radix. I need to get some money to throw in your general direction now...*searches*  :-/

Hang in there, Radix. You can get through this.  Smiley
You should just relax and pick up the phone and call a hitman. Atleast you wouldn't have to pay the rent anymore  :-/

It's great that you're taking it slow, then I can take my time improving my skills at a game that I am currently trying to do a speedrun of.

Good luck!
