Hi SDA dudes!

First of all, I would like to thank all of you for this site. I've been doing my best to watch almost all of the runs listed here. Smiley

Some of my favourite games have already been ran, like Starcraft and SNES classics Secret of Mana. But one of the best is missing which is Settlers 2. So basically this 10th anniversary edition is a remake from the old classic, with better graphics and gameplay. And also different campaign containing 10 scenario maps.

I dig up some old discussion from the forums that this game would be too long to speedrun. But I think that's mainly because of the way people like to play this game (just chilling out and building lots of stuff etc.). I've done some testing and found out that you can actually manage to beat this far more quickly. At least for the first missions, I can't tell yet if some of the scenarios would take much longer.

The trick is that this remake has an ingame function to speed up the game to 2x or 3x (pressing V key). It's not a cheat and thus it would make the run much more bearable to watch. I normally play with the 3x speed and the game is as enjoyable as it would be on normal speed. I think the timing would not be an issue either, you just have to speed up the time when the scenario starts (speeding up later or changing the speed while playing would mean slower run time).

For example; Campaign level 3 is quite a big map and it involves using ships and 1 computer, I test run it 2 times and I got it under 26 minutes with the 3x speed. This map would take a casual player (for fun) like 6 hours or more.

The speedrun gameplay differers a lot from the normal winning strategy and I still have a lot of work to do in getting all the pieces fit to together. I believe there are also some tricks I haven't thought of yet.
It would be nice to hear your comments on this. Would this classify as a qualified SDA run?

Best Regards,
Taikahessu
Thread title:
Sure why not?

You should set the speed once and keep it for the whole run else timing would be difficult or it may even be rejected. Sad

Maybe you come up with even faster strategies while trying or others can give time saving hints so why not give it a try? Smiley

Thanks for your interest!
I made some more tests on speed running and I was amazed how fast you can actually do it. The quicker you are, the worse the computer players are. They actually don't stand a change Smiley

This could be very interesting. I've done some poker session recordings earlier and so I have some knowledge of video recording and packing it into divx.

So next step would be a test video of some of the campaigns! I'm currently working and going to school at evenings so I can't really tell what would be the estimated timetable. But because I love this game so much, I'm quite confident that this project could be finished in a few months.

I'd love to see this, I played Settlers and Settlers II a lot when I was younger.

DivX is not an accepted format for the final encodes though (you can post WIP videos in that format though, not a problem), you can have a look in Tech Support to see how you can make submittable encodes.

I've done testing with the recording and the best software seems to be Fraps. Camtasia and Camstudio resulted in weird ingame graphic effects.

Problem with Fraps is the gigantic filesizes of uncompressed video files. So now I need to make enough hard disk space to produce a test video. Smiley

Here is the link for the game in GameFAQs. http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/934321-the-settlers-ii-the-next-generation-10th

My biggest fear is the lack of verifiers.

Hello again!

This project came to a stop when it turned out I didn't have enough storage for videos.
Now I managed to make a couple of test runs, which are in fact real deals.

But, I've come across a new problem. Anri-Chan export seems to have gone right but I'm missing the video file itself. Original files are rather big (like 20Gb and later even more).
I guess this is the wrong forum, but I have to make a couple of tests more and then I'll submit logs etc.

However I managed to make this demo video available. What do you think, is it SDA content?

Download video (mp4, 17Mb)
I wouldn't worry about verifiers. This is one of those speedruns that anybody, who played the game, can verify. Also, this is quite a popular game.

The video seems to be fine.
I still don't know about the x3 speed thing and how will be looked upon that (officially).
I only played the gold edition so I wouldn't know.

I would seriously poke around for what the thoughts on all that is.
Also the fact that getting a faster times means playing a lot different then you would normally do that campaign really doesn't matter.
The only thing that matters is that you do it as fast as possible.

Having a settlers run would be awesome though!
Jagged Alliance 2 speedrun has "speed" option too and nobody had a problem with it as it was meant to be used by developers, which is always fine with SDA. I'm sure we could find some other games.

Thanks for the comments.

I personally have no problem playing with normal speed but it would only mean that the videos would be 3 times longer. No in-game changes what-so-ever.

At normal speed the most time consuming map - which is number 8 (The Ring) - would take about 2½ hours to finish. If people just want to watch settlers crawling from place A to place B, then I'll use normal speed Wink

PS. I recall that in Gold version of the game, you could only speed up to 2x speed. And with a cheat code you could speed it up like 7x or something. This TNG versio has built-in 3x speed which is usable also in multiplayer mode.
Yeh I remember using that speed button a lot. It was really helpfull.

I'm not saying you wouldn't be allowed to use that speed option, just wanted to insert some caution with it.

But if it's also happening in other games like ewil said, it'll probably no big deal I guess. (especially if it isn't a mod/cheat or something).

All I really remember from that game is that you could play it with 2 people (the gold edition) on 1 pc. Always played it with a friend of mine. Loved that game Cheesy

SSSssup, SDA?

Soooo ... it's been 5 years since I first started this project. Amazing how time flies! The game hasn't aged a bit since, Settlers 2 still feels like brand new! And it's still fun. Lots of stuff has since happened, but in short, it's good to be back!

Troubles on the way

Few years ago, I ran into some difficulties with recording and encoding my videos. The biggest difficulty came with the recording. I ran out of disk space and my HDDs weren't fast enough to handle the recording process. Technology has since advanced. Big thanks go to the developers of Solid State Drive!

What next?

I'm a bit unsure of what my next moves should be. I'd like to get some feedback on calculating the length of the run. I've checked the starting and ending frames of the run with VirtualDub to see the precise run time.

Also I find it hard keeping up the right standards as there are no other speedruns of Settlers 2. I hope I'll set a good baseline for future improvements.

Here's what I got so far:

Level 1 - 9:52, 9:40
Level 2 - 19.04, 18:18
Level 3 - 20:21, 18:18
Level 4 - 13:18, 12:29
Level 5 - 16:13, 15:33
Level 6 - 39:44 (sub 35 is possible?)
Level 7 - 40:32 (I think sub 37 minutes is possible)
Level 8 - 30:49, 27:30
Level 9 - 38:05 (sub 35 minutes is possible)
Level 10 - n/a

I'll be posting those Youtube links ASAP. Be well, everyone.

Level 1 (9:52, a faster run available soon)

Level 3 (18:18)

Level 4 (13:18) OLD RUN

Level 5 (16:13, a faster run available soon)
Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
WANT THIS!

I'm glad you like it Cheesy

Update on Level 5, new record time is 15:33. Another 50Gb+ upload to YouTube then...

Seems like there's always room for improvement, so it's better for me to set my next goal to finish the remaining levels.
That way I'll might someday finish this project!

Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
50GB+ what are you using to record / process?

edit: I'm going to guess fraps recording.

Yeah, I chose Fraps. To be honest I kind of regret buying it as Bandicam would've had much more features with the same price.
But this gets the job done, so it's fine for me.

Of course I could convert to a smaller video file, but these are just demos and I have a fast connection.

Edit: I've moved the videos on the previous post. More will come! thumbsup
Great speedruns! Cant wait to see more
n00b
Thanks for the feedback, fellows! I truly appreciate it.

I've added a couple of run videos.  I've also improved other runs, but I'll upload those later on. Enjoy!

Level 4 done in 12:29 ... I'd say this is finished from my part. Could be improved by few seconds I guess, but also requires help from AI. It got me thinking that there must be a way to manipulate the AI in some way, but that is enough for now.

Also recording in higher resolution like 1920 with 60 fps makes the game laggy even with SSD. So I started running with 1600x900 resolution.

The project is still very much alive. I hope I will retain my enthusiasm for the game Wink
You don't have to worry too much about timing, so long as you know which attempt was fastest. (You asked about it earlier) I'm not going to watch anything simply because I might end up verifying it later anyway. Also don't know enough about the game. Settlers 1 is my old fave.
