Just counted characters and frames. Each character of text in Legend of Zelda runs, on Famicom and NES, is shown for 6 frames.
Famicom version uses 144 characters in the standard (First quest) route. NES uses 351 characters. On NES/Famicom framerate, that means it's a 20.67 second difference in favor of Famicom.
We now have a conversion between the two. A bit bigger than I expected.
Congrats again to DW on the new record! I was there to see it as it happened.
Note for anyone watching the VoD: The first 24 min got muted again, so skip to 51:45 and watch the commentated playback to see the run with game audio.
I'm going through and meticulously timing the Khan route, Classic route (old WR route), and the Team Bearded Flex route (the one Mattrick and I came up with). Will get back to you with the numbers.
Recently got back into LoZ from watching speedrun videos on youtube. Speedrunning is completely new to me, and I doubt I have much talent for it, but I decided to make it a goal to try to get through LoZ 2nd quest in under 1 hour. Is Darkwing Duck's 37:11 time currently the record? It was the only 2nd quest speedrun I found on youtube, and a very impressive run I might add. In any case, I chose 2nd quest because I know it much better than 1st. In the past, I always wasted a lot of time getting the blue ring, magic shield, etc. I'm finding it a new challenge all over again doing this with green link. Currently I'm modeling my run on Darkwing's with a couple extra steps since I'm not nearly as good as him: I go Level 1, 2, Ladder, 3, White Sword, 4, 8 (mostly like Darkwing up to here), then I spend a little extra time getting both of the whistle-hidden heart containers so I can get the Magic Sword a little earlier. I also go out of the way to the raft island and get the red potion instead of the heart container (gives me one use for level 7, one for level 9, which are the two hardest for me). After this, I do 5, 7, 6, and 9.
I still die a lot, so I think it'll be a bit before I hit my 1 hour goal. I'd be interested to hear from any other 2nd quest runners, what your strategies are, or any pointers you may have, and how long it took you to progress.
I've been practicing screen scrolling and block clipping a lot, but I still only get it about 25% of the time on the 1st try. Major time killer when I mess up the ladder clip going from west coast to east coast and end up in the lost woods instead. Hopefully I'll keep getting better.
Combat is the number one thing that will make you go faster. While block clips/screen scrolls save a lot of time, improved combat will save the most. Fight some darknuts and learn how enemies behave. Forcing bombs is nice too, can save you a lot of time. If you don't die and follow the route in 2nd quest, you'll definitely finish in under 1 hour.
