Well, I'm surprised I'm one of the very few people with interest in speedrunning this game. Oh well. Tongue

So far I have a large chunk of the start of the game routed (Start to Elysion, or close to that) and I'm current at a bit of a loss. I'm pretty sure the best weapon combination for a large chunk of the game will be sword + shield (if run at BR 1, that is) and I've discussed the run a bit and figured out that there will be two major stonewalls in a run. These stonewalls are Namul Niram and gates of hell, due to the significant damage these two bosses put out, and the enthral mechanic in the gates of hell fight.

Currently I'm unsure if an upgrade path will be needed from the base shield, but I believe there is only minor improvements down the shield tree, thus it might be inefficient considering we only fight bosses. But then again as there are no random encounters in the run (due to wanting to remain close to BR 1 from the start of the run), the whole party will suffer from unupgraded weapons (except the few that get access to the special weapons at the six bases).

The other interesting part in this game is that potentially 4 extra towns may need to be unlocked to grant access to users of the 'hex' line of skills and the ilk (due to low BR and a highly probably lack of Paris or other psionic users, hexers are the only ones we can use to control moral, and from there we can't even get half of them due to a BR prereq). I currently believe that at least one group of hex users will be needed for the six bases (they kill groups of units really fast due to heavy aoe), but then again, Rush with Olibanum (gained for free after the Nest of Eagles) will hit pretty hard at BR 1 against a large chunk of enemies. From these 4 extra towns along with the main towns, minimal sidequests are needed to recruit characters (Baulson and Darien come to mind). Luckily after getting 18 party members, one can grab Zolean, who is probably the strongest (or one of the stronger) early hex users.

I'm weighing up bothering with unlocking Baaluk, Royotia (though Royotia has a hex user by the name of Joline) and Melphina, as the gains from them might be little. I believe unlocking Balterossa is worth it though, due to Caedmon being an amazing leader (though he does cost 19k to recruit) and later on in the game, Zolean is recruited there.

That is pretty much all I've figured out right now, though I believe getting 4-5 hex users is a key strategy, due to the chance of getting animalcule even in a low BR run (animalcule would effectively help cheese every large army fight along with the Gae Bolg). I'm not sure if anyone has much else to add, but I'll be working on this a lot harder after AGDQ and will hopefully get a run down (Given it is mostly a boss gauntlet with a few sidequests, I'm estimating between 3-6 hours regarding length).
Thread title:
from my experience with the game you can recruit solders who can use hex initially long before the 6 bases would that help
I'm interested as well, are we talking about the 360 version or PC?
Never completed this game, I got tired of farming at swamp. But I wonder how hard is to path it.

Since this game got a really complex building and combat system, a speedrun It's very skill based.

Any% would be like how much time? 5 hours?
All the things
A full run would probably be in the neighborhood of 8 hours. Segmented is probably the way to go here since there are so many BS fights and the fastest route would also work out to be the Low BR route. The main problem is that your ability to kill things off really falls toward the end-game. My brother toyed with routing it for a while and came to the conclusion that you'd probably need to do the mega-grind in order to survive the last boss.
From what I have read, there are some helpful hints to do like, for example, if you have rush out of active combat before the gates of hell he will join by himself in a 6th party.

But i question why the grind would be necessary for the last boss, if its going to be segmented i assume with good formations and set ups redoing for RNG would be sufficient, also because of being low BR levels would level up the last boss as well wouldnt it?

All the things
In order to get good formations/weapons/etc you'd probably have to go out of your way and pick up some of the Guild Quests or other side missions, which can take quite a bit of time. I question how effective the pieces would be without doing a lot of them.

The Mega Grind doesn't give many levels, and instead has a very high stat-ups to level ratio. It takes an exceedingly long time to set up and get through (something like 30 min IIRC) but you wind up with a lot of bonuses without raising your BR much. That said, many bosses have a minimum BR, meaning that their stats are the same regardless of whether you're at that BR or below it. This also goes for the last bosses, where their HP and other stats will be the same regardless of whether you're BR 15 or BR 40. The stats will only scale beyond that minimum level.
if anything does come up on running this i would also be willing to put in my time to help im looking for a game to do besides pokemon and i love this game Cheesy
I am interested to hear if anything came of this run?
I'm not sure if anyone has bothered to invest more time into this game, but what Omni is saying is pretty accurate. Well, almost accurate.

The minimum level is true, but they also scale pretty oddly up until a point, where when you pass that BR, their BR jumps to a higher number (say from 18 to 32 after you are a BR 18), thus making it harder to fight them. At least, last time I checked, that was how it worked. Because of the odd scaling and minimum level, it makes some bosses a pain in the ass. Because of this, the grinding has to go on for quite a bit of time for you to be able to match the stats of the end game bosses, besides this, you also lack strong aoe, unless you specifically level those up while stat grinding.

Feasibly you'd want strong aoe for later in the game, that'd come in the form of dispirit or better, as they can instantly wipe out squads (which would speed up the bases by a large margin), but your BR isn't high enough to recruit any generic soldiers that have it by default, so you have to grind for it.

So yes, you could run this game low BR, skip cutscenes, etc. but you'd have to do the bug grind before glenys, which is the easiest place to get stats and not br. As omni said, that has a long set up time, but rewards you by not increasing your BR much (mostly stats, instead). This is all good in theory, but you still have a disadvantage against later bosses (specifically the last boss). Even at low br, you will have low stats unless you grind for a long time (which would make the run unenjoyable, and nobody wants that) and the final boss can instakill, but also deals a lot of damage and has stupid amounts of health.

I hate to say it, but I just don't think a speedrun of last remnant is going to be feasible without being boring and painful to watch. It'll be interesting up until you hit the mega grind, but that is just going to be slow and painful.

That is ignoring the major issue here. Half the game is a missable, and you'd have to side quest to get decent soldiers, even then, there are a bunch you can't get due to your low BR. Then along with that, you need to money to be able to recruit any decent soldiers, and getting them by the time you need them might be an issue due to them costing a fortune if they are half decent. But to get a decent sum of money outside of the stuff you get from doing the main story... Well... You need to side quest.

That said, if anyone wants to do a run of this game, they are more than welcome to, I'm perfectly happy to make the OP slightly better if people are willing to do runs. I have no intention to do any though, because I think it'll be a little boring to watch and not something I intend to spend my free time on (also, if you are running this, and want the thread hijacked, I'm perfectly happy for any mod to do so).
What about a newgame plus run only? there you get starting gold based on the completed quests in the old run, as well as access to all the basic skills gained by rush?
I found a japanese runner streaming this on twitch earlier (http://www.twitch.tv/levelnineteen_peca). He didn't have a timer on screen but I tried timing his run and it looks like he got a 7:34:19 (i just timed it by adding up vod lengths while taking off some of the dead space in the first and last vods). I'm not really sure what strats he uses since I haven't touched the game in a very long time and he was playing in Japanese. Just thought I'd post about it here in case anyone is interested in watching.
