Thanks!

In any case, there's a ton of time to be saved in the run, now that I've had time to actually think back about nearly everything that happened.  The route's certainly sound, but as I said before I had to switch to EEs on three fights, I got a level up and energy tank in quick succession at the end of the Blue Eyegore fight making death-warping take too long, and the menu gaffes were really awful because of having to go back into the menu twice because I selected the wrong thing and because of forgetting briefly what I was supposed to equip several times.

On the plus side I think most of my boss fights were pretty good and I was able to remember a lot of weapon switches on the way back from corridors, as well as not forgetting to hold Start out of corridors for the two weapon shops I needed to be holding it down for.

As for those enemies, I referred to them as "sea cucumbers" before.  I'm not sure if that's what they actually were.  I honestly think "carrots" is the easiest way for me to remember them, since they really do look like carrots, so I went with that.  It's also a lot shorter than "sea cucumber" in both saying it and typing it out.  So a little bit of laziness is involved, too. Hey look, a zambie thread running loose!

Just got 52:09 (still need to time time it super accurately) any%. I think sub 52 is doable with supreme luck, but I'll come back to that later.

After 2 years of attempts, this is a solid run. much thanks to many runners and people who will get their due in my comments.
Not the zambies.  Congrats for sure, will be watching the run later this week when I have some more free time.  I've been wanting to do a bit of study on the any% route anyway, so that should be a good run to study a bit.

Since you bumped the topic already, I will a few things that I didn't feel was worth necro-posting for yet.

1. I'm running 100% off and on badly, and bought a famicom av and cheap cap card to continue that, but need to take the time to perhaps build an arcade stick or something that will allow me to hold select (and start) the entire game, this will happen soon, later, or never, knowing how I operate.  Holding select pretty much the entire game is a pretty big deal as far as time goes, but I don't really wish to kill my hands.

2. I discovered that if you roll from select to enter a menu, to start to close a menu, whatever button your holding will be done in the menus exactly once, allowing you to do some frame perfect menuing, but only if you need to make a change of exactly one item, meaning to and from fireball and cutter, from cutter to saber, or from no use to saber.

3. Very minor routing changes have been made to 100% as far as me and 13 are running it.  I won't go into them, mostly because I would have to look and compare notes to even pick them out.  If you're learning the route of notes, may be best to talk to one of us, mostly.
I don't know if I'll need to post this somewhere else, but I'll try here for a few days first.

The current rule on third party controllers is "Input Modification: Console players may use third-party controllers, but may not use features not present on controllers bundled with the system. For example, auto- or turbo-fire controllers are banned, except for the TurboGrafix-16 where stock controllers have it. Pressing up and down or left and right simultaneously on a dpad is not allowed as it requires hardware modification in order to do so. PC gamers may use any reasonable input device and remap keys, but may not use macros, scripts or programmable keyboards to automate button-presses."

I was looking at 3rd party controllers looking for one with a usable layout for holding select all game.

One controller I found, which is the generation Nex wired controller, is probably fairly rubbish, but should have about the layout I could use.  It places the start and select button directly above a and b, which I could think of a few ways to hold.  It also has a second a and b on the triggers, and I would remove the pads from either the triggers or the face ab buttons, I'm not sure which (as these could give a benefit in mashing I don't honestly want).  My question is, this is a turbo controller, if I modified it to not be a turbo controller (and removed the extra buttons, which I also don't want), and never used turbo off of it, as it isn't what I'm looking for, could I use this controller?  I'll ask here, and if it gets noticed here, go with the answer here, otherwise I'll re-post it elsewhere.

Goatragon!
So I, uh, got bored, and decided to just do some 100% run attempts with my old route after over a year of not doing any runs and two declarations (one "official") that I would never run the game again.  On about my 6th attempt I got a 1:17:51, which is 15s faster than the previous best run.

I think my stream video froze at least once during the run, but I'll have a link to a proper video of the run later.

Anyway, the run was pretty bad.  I had to do extra menuing due to mistakes or forgetting to switch to an item during a previous menu.  The route I used was also suboptimal, as well.  I think that might have been offset by some good luck and a spectacular It fight that was 1 second off of my best it fight and might have been gold if I hadn't veered off for a safety heart.
Hey guys. Can you confirm the Blue Optomon is actually hardest boss in the game? Or is there some safe tactic against him? I know you use fireball because it's faster, but I wonder is there is some most safe tactic.
