If you include the saving/loading it just makes it easier for verifiers since they can match the times of the save file, although with this game's constant timer it doesn't matter as much. Shouldn't be an issue though.

I do have a few tweaks,
On foot:
-jump is spacebar, mainly because it was the same in the previous games
-sprint is left-shift since I use it all the time and use it to skip cinematics
-action is left-ctrl since I find it easier to stretch my little finger down than up for the few times you need it.

In vehicle:
-primary fire is Num.0 so I can shoot while using the directional keys when on a bike
-secondary fire is left-arrow for the same reason (on Vice City the spacebar doubled for this, don't know why they took it out)
-horn is left-shift since I use it all the time when entering vehicles
-all of the special controls are Home, Delete, End and Page Down since I hate using the numpad.

Hope that helps!

I really want to see your route to Catalina now. You said it takes 1:30, but mine takes 2:30 and I tried what I thought your way was and it came to 2:45, so I really don't have a clue.

I can't watch the videos on filefront Huh?

Edit: I found a way! Love the commentary!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I'm sorry if this sounds dumb. But i can't see (stream) the video on filefront. I only hear your voice and the ingame sound. Should i download it first or some codec?

Can it be that you only see a grey screen?

I strongly suggest downloading it and playing it with vlc. Hope that works.

I got grey screen too, so I'm downloading it... edit when done.

Huh, Cannibal, you sound sort of British. I'm laughing right now at the thought of you killing someone and screaming, "Tea and Crumpets!" Anyways, good luck on getting the ZR-350, though watch out, that car has no handling either.

Yes I had that with that grey screen, too. But that's only sometimes. And when I opened it again it was normal.

Sorry about that CannibalK9, I never really checked how long it took to get to Catalina. It felt like 1:30 but it really was 2:30. It took about the same amount of time getting to the First date (on bike at 2:23, start mission at 4:55) as it was to get to her hideout (on bike at 20:22, start mission at 23:14). I had a little crash right before her hideout so take off like 10 seconds.

I wonder if I can get done with badlands faster than 40 minutes. The last 2 times I did badlands I got done in 40 minutes exactly. I think without little crashes I could beat it at about 37-38 minutes. It's nice that I didn't save as much doing it as I did the first time.

My basic plan for it is Badlands, then save. First date, Truck Commander, Body Harvest, King in Exile, save. Drive to Catalina, Against All Odds, save. Local Liquor Store, save. Small Town Bank, save. Wu Zi Mu (2:34), Farewell My Love (2:41), Both times are faster than the record, Are you going to San Fiero? then save.

The main reason I save after the first several Missions is to have the Sanchez be an easy grab. Whenever I go from Angel Pine across the badlands I always take a Sanchez up the hill. That's probably the biggest time saver for the Badlands. Also the throwing of the satchel charges by the weed was a brilliant idea CannibalK9, I just wish I would throw them at in good spot.

I hope this helps a little.

Okay that's great, I'll keep going with my strategy then.

I usually just try to get lucky with the Sanchez. There are two phone calls to wait through so chances are one will show up by then. I think I did it in 3 segments last time, so I'll so the same again.

Edit: Holy crap, I did it in 2 segments. And it was 38 minutes, so we should both try to beat it!
Yeah, I really liked the commentary, just try to make yourself a bit cleaner. Sometimes your words were getting slurred and I couldn't tell what you were saying.

Hehehehe I just had the most perfect segment ever (after about 800 attempts), certain things were faster than usual, someone got launched virtically into the air which is funny. I lucked out with a fast vehicle after tanker mission, lucked out again with a Sanchez right where I needed one, all the driving was absolutely perfect (more or less), then someone comes in right at the very end and I go slightly the wrong way in distraction and crash into a tree, having to walk a little way to the save point...... heheheeheheheheheheeee!

I'm keeping it......

CannibalK9: I would love to see how fast you can do the 2 races. The times that I got were the best Ive ever gotten. I'm also curious how fast you did the lowrider race at the beginning on your newest runs. I got 1:16 which is also the best I've ever gotten. Sometimes I get lucky on these races. If you beat the record I would LOVE to be in your comments. Just Kidding ... but seriously.

The lowrider race really freaks me out. A virtually flawless one has never gotten below 1:16 (your time there is excellent), and the worst I've ever done was 1:21, and there were certainly more than 5 seconds of mistakes... but for my proper run I was happy with a 1:18.

Unfortunately you can't enter the first race in the Badlands with a police bike, rats. But you can keep hold of a police bike after small town bank to make travelling to the next place quicker.

And I've decided that in against all odds it's faster and more reliable to simply drive to the pay 'n' spray.

I can't say much about my times for those races, when I record a successful segment 7 I'll certainly let you know. Hopefully I won't have fog this time round which will make things a whole lot easier.

I've uploaded up to segment 3 now, the link will live in my signature for the time being. The audio quality is much better now and I've re-done segment 1 (but you really don't have to watch it again). Hope you enjoy!

Fantastic segments and the commentary is spot on!

I'm getting a deeper understanding on the way you've planned this run and I gotta tell you...it's extraordinary!

Great job and keep em' coming Smiley
Easily Amused
I've been admiring your GTA speedruns as they've appeared, Cannibal, and just wanted to say the SA run is great so far. The commentary definitely personalizes your running, and I hope that other runners try it in the future.

I guess the only thing I can say is, keep it coming!

Great Videos. I'm kinda pissed that I never would of known about driving a car during the Big Smoke Mission. I always thought that you needed the bike to finish the mission. I guess it just took someone to try it out. I will definably use it for when I start my segments.

Its kinda funny watching your videos. It made me think about my last practice run through the first city. I kinda just went with the flow on choosing what "quests" (Edit: should of said missions, it makes me sound less of a WoW nerd) to do and in what order by what I'm thinking at the time.

It still amazes me that every time one of us practices runs of the first city, we always seem to find something new. It's just great to see how we keep saving more and more time on the game.

I will definably start to record my runs when I get a job and buy some more ram to help with minor lag problems and the like.
Speed is the key.
Watching your segments were great, K9. Grin

Keep it up.  Wink

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Watching these segments, which've all been great, Cannibal's and Snuv's both, I've been wondering about something.  In previous GTA games, it was always in one's best interest to do as many missions per segment as possible, since saving almost always involved a huge, time-consuming detour.  However, in SA, the save point is usually right next to where you get your mission.  The save at CJ's house is right next to Sweet's missions, the save at the San Fierro garage is right next to the garage mission beacon, the save at the casino is right next to the beacon for that set of Wuzi missions, etc.  So I guess my question is whether or not the large amount of missions per segment has been a strategy that has been tested and proven to be superior, or if it's just a holdover from the previous titles that should be discarded.  Personally, I would think that the 10-15 seconds you spend saving could easily be made up with a no-crash, no-cop-interference, lotsa-fast-cars-spawning  run on a mission, which'd be much easier to get with fewer missions per segment
Just wanted to say that I really liked these 3 segments.

The audio commentary was very interessting, I wish every speedrun would have this.

You always manage to find ways to make more entertaining speedruns!

Many thanks for releasing early&often ;-)

I hate the beginning city with a passion. Theres hardly any good car spawns except on the west side which your hardly ever on. Sometimes with all the random spawns of cars on the road in such a short distance it makes it harder to dodge cars in this city, which is a little different with higher class cars and wider roads in the later cities. It always gets easier for me to play as soon as I get to San Fiero, and then it goes away as soon as I'm back in the first city. You can see I hate it so much that I don't even remember what it's called.

The only really good spawns near grove street where you spend most of the time in are the Remington, or a motorbike. Basically the cars with the best handling are the ones I always favor the most.

I would seriously love to get the chance to be able to do a segment without any mess ups, but with all the random factors I don't see it in sight. So sometimes you just have to figure out which little mess ups won't severally screw up your time and just live with it.

I personally like to do as little of missions in a segment that I have to do. I always try to get in 2 missions at a time if it's in my best interest.. The saves I did during my practice of the first city are always before a mission that I know I will have problems with. It may also be a mission that may have a normally random factor that I don't wanna have to do the missions before it over again. I like to eliminate the amount of time it takes to get to a problem are so I won't have to go back as far just to get back up to it.

O, and one more thing. It's just Snuvs', or Snuvs's if you prefer. LOL
give me your eyes!!!
At the start, I truly believe I don't waste as much time with screw-ups as I would do by saving. I have a clock constantly in the corner of my screen and through a huge number of attempts I can see where every second is going. Even 15-20 minutes into a segment I usually deviate by no more than about 5 seconds at the worst of times, and it's no use saving repeatedly for some of the easier missions because there's simply not enough places to make up the time lost.

It gets easier to save later on admittedly, and when there aren't helicopters involved I try to do it sensibly so that saving actually benefits me (in terms of speed, not ease of running or number of attempts required or anything like that). That's why I've decided to split my original segment 7 in half, because then I can take more liberties with the races rather than being overly careful because of how difficult Catalina's missions are. I doubt much will change from my practice later on though as it worked alright the first time, although I will certainly strive to make each part quicker.

So the only part I've considered this are for the bigger luck factors, such as fast cars. Los Santos and Badlands don't have many problems with this, and police cars are very common in San Fierro, and heli's will be used most in Las Venturas, so I'm confident in my strategy with regards to saving.

Thanks for asking though, it's a very good point.
I am going to redo my Badlands segments cause of lag problems but I will be playing it with keyboard and mouse instead of my joypad. This also means that I won't be playing with my joypad anymore.

Was there any problems with my first 8 segment videos that a re-encoding wouldn't fix?
