I agree completely - I have nostalgia for NES FF1 given that it was the 1st FF game and 2nd RPG I played as a kid; but I think for a marathon the PSX, GBA, or PSP versions would be better watches since they're faster paced and less grindy.

The PSP one is likely easily the fastest because of the item glitch -- you can get the strongest sword in the game using the Steel Gloves bought in in Melmond before the Earth Cave (actually you can get them in the Western Keep/Astos's Castle but the extra time to trek back to it once you get the key would be pointless). Lots of other goodies, such as the Judgement Staff (casts flare in battle) from a mere leather cap, which you can get before even Garland.

Wow, I was completely unaware of these glitches in the PSP version. Two questions:

(1) Lenophis, are you able to do the PSP version? and;

(2) Is the PSP version easy to stream into the S-Vid setup that I have in my streaming room? That is, is there a PSP-to-Svid cable?

I know Rinimt streams PSP FF7 Crisis Core using Composite Cables. It seems at the very least a converter from Composite to SVid should work although the quality will probably still be Composite.

If we have to use comp. sometimes, that's okay. But, if it's possible to get every system using s-vid output, that'll minimize the number of things that can get fracked up during the marathon (if every system uses the same type of output)...

Edit: rin contacted me privately about including Crisis Core in the marathon. I'd love to include another non-main game in the marathon, and I'm pretty sure that we'll be able to work out something to get her to Edmonton. I'll add it into the games list later today.

Poxnor it's pretty much going to happen rin will be there one way or another. We were able to get in touch with Kari as it seems she and Denton are BOTH coming up. Kari even offered to get her up there since they pass through I15 going through Helena directly. Plus if I can make it (And it's looking like it more and more) then it should not be an issue at all Smiley

Also...trust me we can keep it PG when it comes to the game. It's a matter of what we do on OUR OWN TIME is our own thing, but when it comes to be up to the standards we need to have at a charity is another :). Unless there are mention of mouse butts...then I cannot promise anything Wink

I have both component (3x video/2x audio) and composite (1x video/2x audio) A/V cables for my PSP (not aware of an official s-video one, though it sounds like there are 3rd party versions) - the main gotcha is that you need a PSP-3000 in order to do composite output for games (PSP-2000 can only do component).

I'm somewhat familiar with the equipment glitch in FF1PSP - basically you abuse a glitch with the memory cursor function to change the contents of your inventory and give yourself endgame equipment early on.

I was thinking of coming but once I looked up planes tickets and the cheapest one is $777. I, unfortunately, do not have that kind of money. Sadly there will be no english 10-2 run. At least all of you will be spared the english version of the song that is Real Emotion.

RE PSP S-Video: I have a friend who did try to use S-Video cables for his PSP and it just didn't work, he was only able to use the Composite he had. As FFGamer mentioned, I've got Composite cables for my PSP (along with a PSP-3000). If someone does know of a 100% working S-Video cable for PSP though that'd be great.

Another option for PSP might be to play on PS3. A lot of PSP games are available over PSN, so if this one is that may be an option, assuming it plays well (no emulation lag or other such issue).

Regarding FFXII, I'll send a pm to nitrodon sometime fairly soon (unless he beats me to it). My left hand is mostly out of commission for right now, but it should be fine in a couple weeks, so hopefully I'll be able to do some testing then.

As far as I know that's only possible for PSX games ported to the PS3/PSP like FF7-9. FF7 Crisis Core is an original PSP game, and can only be played on a TV with a PSP and AV-out cables.

There were no official Sony S-video cords for the PSP sold through GameStop/EBGames. I know this cause I've been working there longer than the PSP has been out. ><

There may have been some sold directly through Sony, but it's highly unlikely.

I've read on the bug, and tried to do it a few times without success. I'll have to defer to VG on this one, since he ran SS/RTA of the PSP version. The basic gist is you have the cursor over "Optimum," and press L/R and confirm at the same time to swap to another character. The game will then give the character you swapped to the best gear of the previous class...or something like that.

Speaking of FF1, I have a few days off this week, so I'll be streaming some FF1 RTAs to get an idea of what's going on.

You should be able to do the run in about 2 hours, even with marathon luck. All of my run attempts (including my best 1:57 run) are on my YouTube channel, so watch those for more stuff about it, including recommended party. Grinding White Mage WILL be necessary for Healaga, since you need to be I think Lv 33 to use it.

I'll help whoever wants to run FF1PSP, but I just won't be able to go there myself. No passport and no money. For further help/discussion about it for whoever is wanting to run it, let's stick to the thread about it and leave this to discussion about the marathon.

Yeah, with a small amount of practice it's /really/ easy to pull off. Once you know the timing. And it's not "best gear of the previous class" it's just that armor and weapons share an address (or something).....as noted you can dupe things, AND you can put things on slots of characters who wouldn't normally be able to them -- in the wrong spot at that, for armor. So you could potentially have a black mage with a Barbarian Sword, etc.

Shawn Nakashima (Obdajr.) I can learn FF4 (already know most of it) before march for sure, and my time would probably be around 4:30 or so. If Rane could help me through it that would be awesome! I live in BC, so traveling to Edmonton is not a problem. I will be a morning / afternoon person in March due to work, but can work around any schedule. If it turns out better for someone else to run FF4, I can commentate on pretty much any of the FF games, or just make people coffee; happy to help in any way! I'll probably have to take a couple days off work, which may or may not be possible, but I'll get back to you on that.

Sorry, I've gotten behind on updating the participants list (rin and obdajr, I haven't forgotten about you). Just wanted to note that I've written part of the ride-guide (for people coming from the south and the east). I'll write the part for people coming from the west later; obdajr, if you're driving, do you want me to write it for you coming via Banff/Calgary, or via Jasper?

Edit: All the participants and games should be up to date in the first post; I'll get to prizes this weekend.

One possible charity we could contact is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. On the topic of issues affecting children, we could also look to a charity like Make A Wish. That said, I know that people have had more luck in the past contacting and working with smaller charities. If anyone has any ideas for a smaller charity we could contact, let me know.

Soul of Chaos dungeons? (Only applies to PSP version). I'd only do each dungeon once, which would put a nice Shinryu vs Omega incentive up. I'm not sure how much time this would add though, since the last two do tend to take a while to complete.
Fight Chaos blindfolded. This would be more dramatic with Origins, since I'll be assuming VG strats on PSP (spam Healaga).

Donation challenges of rare monsters:
That guy, the T-Rex (forget the Origins name offhand, he's in Yahnikurm Desert next to the Mirage Tower), Iron Golem (Tiamat's floor in the Temple of Chaos), Green Dragon (in the Waterfall).

Likewise, if anyone can think of FF1 donation incentives, by all means throw them out there.

Yeah, it's looking like the marathon is going to run until Monday evening already. Yay Smiley

As for the donation incentives: I obviously like the character name one. As for the party, how much will that affect the duration of the run? I'm not in love with rare monsters as a donation incentive, just because they're rare -- I've spent an hour trying to encounter WarMech just for the fun of fighting him, and it's not pretty. An hour of running up and down a hallway would not be a good watch.

Diabetes kinda hits home for me, so I think that the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation would be a good charity to donate towards. I do agree with the notion that a smaller organization might fit better with this kind of marathon however.
