Thanks alko. And thanks for the offer FFgamer -- let's do that via PM so that we don't clog this thread more than I'm already doing on a daily basis I just want to be sure really far in advance that the equipment setup works, since I really don't want to be scrambling around with that at the last minute (especially since it can be tested so far in advance).
And yes, that's my house. After flying to Edmonton, you'll spend one night in an igloo, because that's what everyone lives in in Canada. Next, you'll make the long walk (no cars here) to the Atlantic coast, after which you'll embark on a marathon swim to where that house is located (Tuscany, perhaps, by the style?). You can see why I live there! ...or maybe it's just some strangely large-sized parking page from GoDaddy. I'm just surprised that it's not a picture of Danica Patrick trying to sell us something
Route: I've got the route pretty well figured out, just need to hammer down the menu'ing/marathon specific stuff (unless some new trick comes up before the marathon).
Safety nets added to the run: I've recently added in some huge bonuses such as more HP for the general run (Normally I take off my HP Up materia about 2 1/2 - 3 hours in). While I wish I could say for sure that this would cut down on the safety saves needed, knowing Crisis Core... It probably won't. While I can beat the game without dying once (and thus not needing the extra phoenix downs I'll be picking up for the marathon), I'm NOT counting on this at all. Unfortunately, some bosses haven't been uh... Playing nicely with the testing I've been wanting to do. In other words, they've actually been giving me (near) perfect fights when I want to test some safety things. Argh!
Time: The base marathon route should add, at most, 15-20 minutes to my normal run, however Crisis Core can troll me HARD with time wasters (DMW is a huge, HUGE troll). My current time is a 6:20 (final boss kill) basically. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, this game can troll HARD with the DMW (my 6:20 actually had a bunch of DMW trolling though).
Possible Incentives: Ifrit Rematch - Will take maybe 30 seconds to do this fight, would be done before heading to Nibelheim if met. Bahamut Rematch - Need to do one mission to unlock him, but takes maybe a minute or two to do (depends on if he decides to troll me hard or not). Would also be done before Nibelheim if met. THE SQUATS! - There's a mini-game that becomes available about halfway through that involves squats. Lots of squats. This has a two-fold effect. First part is the actual squats, second part is building the best flower wagon ever. Actual Squats: http://www.twitch.tv/rinimt/c/1717051 Flower Wagon: http://www.twitch.tv/rinimt/c/1717070
For the actual squats, my thought is have donations for the squats go for who in the room actually does them (Can donate towards who does them, if the total hits a certain amount, the minigame is done). This incentive (in total) will take probably 12ish minutes. It's about 5 1/2 for the squats, the scene is a couple minutes long, a lot of the time comes from the fact I'd have to travel back from the Shinra building to the church to build the second wagon.
Watching the ending - If we decide to make them incentives... Well yeah. I'd really wanna push to get this one in as an incentive. Total time: Roughly 37-38 minutes (depending on how much of it is watched, namely if we include the credits and the tie-in to FFVII, also known as 95% of the FFVII opening).
I'll do a test run with all the incentives in and get back to you.
It took three attempts (two game overs in the Ice Cave), but the final time clocked in at 2:16:47, and the trip to do Citadel and class change added about 11 minutes to the run, though I did gain some of that back due to less encounter trolling in the final dungeon.
I suppose next month after I've done a ton more attempts I can shave the estimate down some. But for now I need to account for all kinds of trolling.
Okay, it's 3 November, and I would like to see updates from all the runners on routing, practice, etc. I know I'm being a hard-ass about getting everyone planning and practicing early, but consider that most runners at the *GDQ marathons could practice their games 20 times in the time it takes some of you to practice your game even once. That's why I'm riding all of you so hard to practice early. And, if you think I'm being a hard-ass now, just wait for February
Like I said, this applies to everyone, including me. So, here's my reality check on how I'm doing.
FFL3 running update: Routing is complete, minus any tiny improvements that people suggest while I'm streaming, e.g., boss strats or more improvements to those stupid waterfall puzzles (PS: this is why streaming practice is a great idea). All spells and equipment that I'm purchasing are finalized, as are my transformation times (robot before waterhag; second robot before Chaos' Tower; and, two cyborgs ASAP strictly after I have the second robot, and necessary before entering the mountain on Floatland). However, I still need to put some serious work into memorizing maps, and drilling those stupid waterfall puzzles. I have a tendency to flake out and need to pull up a map on GameFAQs, particularly later in the game.
I think 4 hrs is a good marathon time estimate. I had a practice run that was pretty much exactly 4 hrs. The game wasn't being very trolly that night, but I paused multiple times to refill my drink, grab a snack, and have a washroom break; and, I was generally screwing around with the chat at all times. I think all that wasted time is a fair approximation of how much time I lose if the game is being a troll during the marathon
Regarding FF8 commentary: I've discussed some of the improvements that FFgamer has made to my SGDQ route, but I haven't seen all of them yet. That said, I'm not really worried about FF8 commentary (though I will brush up on the route before the marathon!), given that the gist of the route is still the same.
Regarding FF6 commentary: I've done jack all on this front. That will have to change in the new year. Obviously, working on FFL3 is my priority right now; but, I'll have to seriously brush up on the details of FF6 before the marathon, since I've forgotten a lot since commentating on Essentia's run during SGDQ.
FFXII: The route is pretty solid, but I'm not nearly as far into it as I would like (currently mastering Ba'Gamnan farming). That said, as I go I am making sure that I have each part absolutely down before I move on, and I often stop to test things. My Pokemon XD run is now officially on hold until I have at least three RTA's under my belt, so expect better progress over the next couple months. As for donation incentives, the Elder Wyrm and King Bomb fights seem quite doable. I would also suggest that somebody act out Vaan's shouting deal in Bhujerba, but I have a feeling somebody will donate for that regardless.
Commentaries: I will obviously be able to commentate for whatever parts of XII I don't run. I'm not even worried about that. For X, I could do it right now if necessary, and the only things that might trip me up would be drop/steal percentages and the Sphere Grid. I'm not quite as versed in VI, myself, but I'd be good for filling gaps and banter if nothing else - I still know the game quite well.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to continue my current discussion with Ba'Gamnan's lackeys...
FFXII: As AlecK47 said, the route is pretty solid. I've done two full game attempts so far, and both were slightly over 9 hours. I should be able to get this faster by the marathon, especially if I learn how to write up notes and REMEMBER TO RE-EQUIP THE MIRROR MAIL (a mistake that's very easy to make and nigh impossible to recover from). I can confirm that both Elder Wyrm and King Bomb are doable, though they can troll if they want to. Fortunately, both are immediately after save crystals. The other optional battles in this game are too easy, too hard, or take too long to reach.
FFX: I'm more familiar with this than FFXII, so I concentrated on 12 first. As a result, I haven't done anything on this this year, but I'm mostly familiar with the route, and very familiar with the game mechanics (having helped Caracarn with his runs). I did a fairly bad NG+ run (read: I completely messed up Yuna's SG and had to improvise a lot) sometime last year with a final time of 11:43, which seems to be all I can really show for this at the moment. Other than naming, the only donation incentive I can think of is getting (and naming) Anima.
Commentaries: I've assisted some people in running the games in question, so I guess that helps. I'll need to familiarize myself with a few of the newer glitches in FF4, and much of the route in FF6, but FF8 is probably good.
I met the FF6 developers in-person... I actually haven't done any practicing lately, but I've been feeling better the past couple weeks, soI'm planning to start running FF6 again soon. I know I gave 6 hours as the estimate, but that can change depending on whether I do any% or 100%. Any% would be more like 5:30, and 100% would be 6:45.
I think I might drop out of FF9 and 10 though. We've already got people who have done a lot of work on those games, so hopefully it's not a problem.
Guess I should post this part too, didn't even think about it. Whoops!
FF6 commentary: I know the route fairly well, though I haven't touched the game in a few months outside of a small race (and even the last time I did a full run, it was on Advance and didn't have slots or Vanish/Doom (the latter thanks to it not working on GBA version)). Should pick up the route again fairly easily if I see it again.
FF9 commentary: Same thing, I know it fairly well, though will need to watch more streams (and not when I'm dead tired) to keep refreshed on it.
Any other game commentary: We'll see what game needs it/if I'm up for it between FF6/FF9 commentary AND the Crisis Core run. I've done a run of FF1 PSP using the route that Leno's using (though my time left something to be desired in comparison), so if that needs it I can do it (depending on how the schedule works out). Same for any other game really.
As my current main role currently is the prime stream monster, I am happy to divulge that I have been watching streams a lot lately, basically from waking up to going to bed, even falling asleep to one yesterday. Infact at this very moment I have three of them going at once, where one is a charity marathon, one is charity marathon training, and one is a fighting game tournament. I see no reason why I won't be able to keep this pace up.
When it comes to my role as potential FFV advisor progress has been slower (much due to all these streams following and running parallell to eachother) but still somewhat fruitful. I have downloaded and watched the single segment run here on SDA, watched the 4:20:08 RTA on NicoNicoDouga, and written down route notes that I've followed and refined as I went along. Currently the first hour and a bit until after the Karnak events seem somewhat safe, but I've only gotten to do two attempts so far.
I've been spending most of my speedrun time of late working on FF9 since I'm running part of that for AGDQ in 2 months - my current personal best is 9:58 and I'm working on getting that below 9:30 (with safety saves and other marathon-safe strats).
My FF7 PB without Gold Sauce date manipulation or recruiting Yuffie/Vincent, which adds probably 15-20 minutes, is 9:10 (2 minutes off the fastest known SS time on the NA version), and since I'm planning to start making sub-9:00 SS attempts for SDA submission in January, I'm not worried about FF7 (the game at least, the dating manipulation routes will be another story ).
KH2 will be a bit more casual since it's a bonus stream game, though I'll do a few practice runs after AGDQ to get back up to snuff. I'd like to put a route together for an SS Beginner-mode run on the Final Mix+ version (which will have pretty different battle strats for the 2nd half of the run, along with extra optional bosses that would be fun to show off), though if I don't have time I'll just do the NA version (and bring my Final Mix+ disc and a save file to show off some of the added content after the run proper).
Lastly, I think I'd like to drop from FF10 commentary (Essentia should have that covered if she's not going to play) and do FFL3 instead.

I suppose I should've mentioned this in my previous post, but for now I'm wanting to keep the FF1 estimate at 3 hours. I still need to work on getting more safety saves in to cut down on lost time in case qué disastré happens. By December or January, I may be comfortable bumping the estimate down some, but for now I'd like to keep it where it is. I've also determined that I won't be running FF2, mostly because I can't rely on stupid luck like in Origins, and the PSP version has loading screens.
Commentary: Go ahead and add me to Crisis Core. I should be able to recite the dialogue just as easily come marathon time. :p
Thank you very much for the updates, everyone. I'll update the first post with various details, and comment on everyone's requests (in short: "sure") tomorrow or the day after. I'm also going to have to update my FFL3 estimate. Tonight, I got a 2:52:xx on FFL3, and I'll have to see how consistently I can get those sorts of times.
You'll hear more from me soon, and I'll address everything that everyone brought up
Just as a side note Poxnor I have a friend who wants to perhaps come by to watch me do some commentary and I'd be willing to throw in the needed funding to allow her into your home for a bit. You already know the backstory about it all regarding this person and it's legit.
As far as updates for me...I'm pretty much a go for everything regarding time off and whatnot. I've discussed many things with my boss at work and I should be fine. Now which DAYS I can take off are still up for debate SLIGHTLY, but that's still far down the road. Sufficient to say I will be there 100%.
Commentary: I'll be doing FFL3 runs here once I finish up my current donation incentive games. That way I have a full understanding of what it is I'll be talking about and all the other little things. I know that I'm probably the only one who can do this without having to worry about having to do any runs persay given I'm not actually running ANYTHING at this point. So I should be on schedule easily.
On a side note here is the video of the Squats mini-game
That would be the incredible Leno and Rin discussing how amped up I would be to FEEL THE BURN!!! Also I have said this and I mean it. I will wear one of those 80s headbands and shorts and t-short that says I work out just to give it that whole hilarious feeling of how into squats I am just to make people laugh
Side note: crystalsforlife.ca is now a redirect to the first post in this thread (plus or minus the time it takes for the DNS changes to propagate). I'll get to replying to everyone and updating the first post within a day or two.
Haha ok got your twitch message. I'm good with sending most of this stuff. I actually looked to message you on here and could only find start a private thread...pft thread. On Tuesday I will find out about the FF IV and and gba system. But yeah you can add the Final Fantasy III snes cart and and the Super Gameboy Player and Final Fantasy V advance for your prizes. I'll find out how much Canada post hates me tomorrow.
rinimt: Based on the times you gave, I changed your marathon time to 7 hours. If you want to change it further, just let me know. I've added all your donation incentives, except watching the ending. At 40 minutes, I'm just not sure about that one.
Lenophis: If Citadel adds only 11 minutes, I think either a donation requirement to do it as a bonus stage, or a bidding war of class change vs. no class change would be a good incentive (I haven't decided which of those two options would be better). I added you to Crisis Core commentary; but, I hope the bit about you reciting dialogue was a joke (commentary != reciting dialogue).
AlecK47 and Nitrodon: I added the Elder Wyrm and King Bomb to the incentives list, and upped the time allotment for FF12 to 9 hours. Let me know if you want that changed. I also added a choice for who does the shouting match to the list, even though I have no clue what that is (I haven't played 12).
Nitrodon: I added the FFX incentives; but, I didn't bother touching the time since you're not really certain what it'll be yet.
Essentia: I took you out of FF9 and FF10. I added any% vs. 100% bidding war, and adjusted the time accordingly. I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better. Would you like me to add you to FF10 commentary, as puwexil suggested?
puwexil: I've dropped you from FF10 commentary and added you to FFL3 commentary (yay for FFL3 commentary )
lizzie: Thank you very much for the prizes. I've added the ones you mentioned in your message to the prizes list, in addition to the FFI and FFII for PSP that you mentioned earlier.
Dissidia: Routes for this game are easy and solid. No Problems. Hour at most if I do one route. If you want me to do all 10. Less than 10 hours. If you want me to do all 10 plus the 4 End Story Segments, thats about 12 hours......
Dissidia 2: Easy routing. No solid time yet.
XIII-2: Been practicing (sort of). Gotten times down a bit but nothing stable. One run I got 5:10, the next I got 6:25 due to horrid luck.
Gonna say I probably won't be making it though.... Might as well update just in case
Poxnor: Yes, you can add me to the FF10 commentary.
As for other FF6 donation incentives, we could do the same ones that we did for SGDQ: -naming characters (all 14 if 100%, otherwise everyone except Umaro) (6-letter limit) -train suplex -Banon riding a chocobo -Magitek ending (if 100%)
In FF10, you can name your aeons (much like the GFs in FF8). The required aeons are Valefor, Ifrit, Ixion, Shiva, and Bahamut, so those will also be named. If memory serves, the character limit is 8 for everything.
FF4 practice is going really well, new PB today of 3:40:30
donation incentives for FF4 could include naming characters and who to walk around as (maybe). I don't know any stragegies for optional bosses, but learning them wouldn't be too tough a task.
Sorry for the quick update, let me knoww if you need any more info!
Obdajr: thanks for the update. I was about to call out runners who hadn't posted updates, but I think (I'll have to check) that you were the only one. But, I saw you streaming lots of practice, so I wasn't worried In fact, you've been kicking FF4 around the block...
I'll go through the last few posts tomorrow and update all the donation incentives. To all the runners: take a look at the donation incentives in the first post. If there is a "?" in an incentive for your game, it means that I'm missing information. It's certainly not the world's top priority at the moment; but, if you could fill in any gaps, that would be great.
Deathfire: I'm sorry to hear that you're thinking you can't make it. Is there a reason that you won't be able to attend that we could help with? I thought you lived in Edmonton (or am I thinking of someone else from SDA?).
