I was going to actually suggest Crystal Chronicals as A) You have that in your collection Poxnor and B) you yourself said you've never played it. Neither have I, and I believe it's 4 plays no? Would be fun to have a game no one has tried as we flounder around on a game no one has played much to the enjoyment of everyone watching!
My preference would be to do something like that ONLY if we end up ahead of schedule and need to fill time - for the actual scheduled content I'd prefer to stick to high-quality, well-practiced speedruns.
The bonus stream on the other hand should be a very appropriate place for casual/fun/funny games.
What puwexil said. The marathon itself should be high-quality, well-practiced runs. I expect that most people will want to chill during the after-marathon time (see that damned mall, do a day trip to Jasper, go curling, etc.), but bonus streaming time is the time to do silly stuff
Umm, I don't think that really fits with the theme of the marathon, even during the bonus-streaming section. I mean, stuff like KH makes perfect sense for bonus stream, but MMX just seems kind of random.
It's probably a moot point anyway, since I doubt we'll have the equipment for a three-way race
Speaking of equipment, What kind of TV do we plan on using for the marathon? Also, You can pretty much chalk me up as going now 99% barring any huge financial blow or family related event.
We have a 27" or 28" (I can't remember) flatscreen CRT (i.e., zero lag), using S-video inputs.
We could also move (*shudder*) a 40" LCD with HDMI input if someone needed that for, e.g., FFXIII. But, we also have S-vid cables for the PS3, and I've streamed the newer FFs on the first TV.
Glad to hear you're (99%-for-sure) coming, FFgamer!
Well, I can never say 100% sure til I buy the plane tickets but other than something like "knock on wood" serious injury/health problems, I will be there.
EDIT: Btw, I was able to beat the current WR for MQ Any% with 2:49:35. I still have room for improvements. Mostly based on RNG/Luck though. Gonna do some 100% soon to get better estimate on time.
Re TV: I just remembered that the PS3 can't output S-vid and HDMI at the same time. So, using the HDMI TV would make no sense, since the whole recording/streaming setup is S-vid. Everything will be on the CRT, I think.
Re MQ: Good job, FFgamer!
Re charity: I'd like to start the poll to pick the charity in one week, on 20 October 2012. So, if there are any other suggestions that you have, now's the time to get them out there.
Re games: If you want to play an FF game (not MM, Meta ), don't forget that there's still time to learn. Several of the side-games are shorter (you can even learn/practice on emu, if someone else attending can bring the cart), and I'd still love to find someone who wants to learn/play FF5.
MetaSigma. With good Pazuzu Luck and not having pretty much any bad RNG. I really think sub 2:40 is doable. The segmented run is 2:42 and I think that I can surpass that eventually. Just need to have a lot of good things go my way.

That run is also like 7-8 years old now, and predates the first TAS. Lots of new stuff has been discovered since then. It's no surprise that SS times are getting closer to beating it
Yeah. I had a 3:26 100% Run that technically wasnt 100% cuz the route was messed up and I was permanently missing 2 items. I made modifications and I believe sub 3:20 possible for 100%(All spells, items, equipment).
Just found out about this on the live stream. A good charity that you can use is Charity Water for building wells in Africa. http://www.charitywater.org/
Honestly, I hadn't given any thought to the name. However, I don't like FFDQ as a name, because I don't want to give the false impression that this is an official SDA event.
Well, once a charity is decided upon, there's always plays on the issue that's to be covered along with various things in the Final Fantasy universe...
Though a phrase that's sticking in my head, at least is "Crystals of Life Marathon," with less a reference to "Melodies of Life" and more... well, fighting disease and disability and basic life amenities is working towards life and Final Fantasy is all about crystals... I dunno; just some random brainstorming.
To contribute a little more, I'm seriously considering going in some capacity, especially if I can get some kind of job for the winter/spring. I'd have to check what exactly the cost is to get from DC to Edmonton, but as someone who really needs to get off her rear end and start working on what I want to do, preparing for a marathon is as good an excuse as any.
Furiously Fast Final Fantasies xD On another note, while I'm still no way closer to acquiring funds to travel, at least my parents didn't pull their veto and cut all of my pocket money when I broke the idea to them. On the other hand, they had booked a skiing week-end on exactly the same dates, and just assumed I was gonna be free and go there. That's them. xD
Admittedly, at first, I didn't think the name mattered much at all. But, the more I think about it, the better I think it will be to have a name for when we contact the charity of choice. Being able to say, "Hello, my name is Ryan Vogt, and I'm the organizer of Fantasies Lightning Quick, a charity video gaming event" is so much better than, "Hello, my name is Ryan Vogt, and I'm organizing some Final Fantasy video game marathon." The first immediately comes off as more professional and organized, and makes a better impression.
And no, we're not calling this marathon "Fantasies Lightning Quick." I'll slap myself upside the head for that one, but I needed a placeholder name for my argument
If we do choose a medical charity, I have to say that "Crystals of Life" is pretty darned catchy. I think I actually prefer something that doesn't include "Final Fantasy" in the title; something more abstract and cool has a more PR-friendly sound to it for when I first contact the charity.
Edit: Stef just pointed out that if we did a marathon for Ducks Unlimited, we'd get to call the marathon "Chocobos Unlimited." She's being really witty tonight
Crystals of Life, or Crystals of Light both sound good. I do agree a little that we should find a way to name it around the organization were raising money for.
