Part of a balanced breakfast.
Rather than continue to talk about this on the verification thread, I decided to make a thread for the game here. There's already a thread on Flash games but information posted there is likely to get lost.

I am employing some strategies that TheVoid employed in his run, notably in Level 2. Although I am doing well on the first three rooms, I am unable to get sub-80 like he was able to. I would like to know what website he was playing on, as that might or might not be a factor. If I could play on a different website and get a lower time that way that would be ideal.

After about 90 minutes of attempts I finished a run with a sub-par Level 3 in 154.33. Clearly I am missing something important about getting those lower times. Again, I'd like to know if it's execution related or if it's something to do with the game itself.

Cool that you're going to improve it!

I'm pretty sure I played/recorded the game on Kongregate with Camtasia.

You were talking about jumping the gap in the beginning of the cave level (With those moving platforms), right? I'm also pretty sure that it doesn't save time because of all the moving platforms, you need to wait for them anyway. I just did it for show Smiley

I found a more consistent strat for that anyway. If you're fast enough you can run across the gap to the first moving platform. Makes that jump a lot easier.

I saw your video and it looked like a different version of the game. The start screen looks slightly different, which is why I thought it might be a different version.

You reach the end of Level 2, Room 1 at sub-80 and I'm consistently getting 81-82 seconds. Not sure where I'm losing those seconds. It gets worse in Room 2, where I'm a good 4-5 seconds behind.

I'll see if I can find a different version on the Internet somewhere and see if that makes a difference.
Instead of playing online on Kongregate, you could download the game and record with Fraps. That's what I did with Don't Look Back; the quality is much better than with a screen recording software. As usual, the link is more or less hidden in the source code: http://chat.kongregate.com/gamez/0000/0017/live/FPAWorld1_07a.swf (it's written v1.7b in the game).
Good luck!

Thanks Arcanod. I'll try that.

EDIT: I didn't see much of a quality difference except for the Fraps recording seemed to stutter less. I guess I'll stick with Fraps for this though because I don't have to wait for Camtasia to count down before it starts recording. Thanks.

After getting a few runs to Level 3, it is clear that I have to practice Level 3 individually before making another attempt because I am hemorrhaging time there. In the meanwhile, I found a rare jump that I suspected was possible but wasn't sure until it happened. It's pretty inconsistent, so I won't be going for it in a run. However I do think it saves some time.

You mean the part after rolling down the hill at 0:13? Like in my run you can also do the bumping your head thing and then land on the second platform (I failed that and landed on the first platform) which I think is the fastest way.
Part of a balanced breakfast.
I actually used to do that bump trick and I didn't notice it being particularly faster and it was also way more inconsistent so I stopped doing it.

The rare jump was to that group of four platforms. I landed on the topmost platform instead of one of the middle two. I had suspected it was possible but never pulled it off until then.
Worthless categories WR master
To me it looks a bit like the kind of jump you can make in N by releasing movement keys and jumping while on a slope to bounce perpendicular to that slope. I recall seeing the same kind of mechanic in Fancy Pants but I haven't played enough to really tell how it was done.
Ah I see, nice Smiley

Also, I'm not sure if you're aware of it but when you do the loop at 0:18 you should release the direction key just before the end of it otherwise, like in the video above, you get out of the loop too fast/too far.

Thanks. I'll make sure to do that.

Cut the 150! I got a time of 148.30 after some much-needed practice in Level 3. That level turned out to be improved by 2 seconds with slightly less egregious mistakes, though it can be brought down further.

I've filled out the submission form to SDA and will keep you up to date on the verification process.

Nice! In level 3, you can skip the spring by going on the spiders (a bit harder) and, at the end, do a small jump at the top of the hill instead of slowing down (a bit easier), like this:

At the end of level 2 (second platforms section), TheVoid's approach is both faster and easier to execut.
Yeah good job cooopercrisp, keep it up! Smiley
Those 2 things in level 3 are some nice improvements Arcanod, especially the spiders hop.
Part of a balanced breakfast.
Damn Arcanod, those strats look good. I'll definitely have to practice those. I didn't know of a way to consistently bounce off the spiders but that looks a lot more consistent.

Just beat my PB by 0.17 seconds lol.

One stupid mistake was getting hit by a spider but I immediately bounced off of it and ended up landing on the trampoline. It still wasted time, but apparently it wasn't that bad of a gaff.

Since I haven't submitted the 148.30 I'm just going to update the comments and submit this one instead.

EDIT: Looks like I can't edit the submission until it's approved so I'll have to wait.

Also, I'm having a hard time with the jump to avoid hitting your head at the end of Level 3. I'm jumping too hard even though I'm lightly pressing the S key and I don't know how to do it properly so I'm abandoning that strat for now. I'll still go for trampoline skip because I have gotten that occasionally and that saves some time.

There is a very interesting shortcut in level 1, found by a player by the name of Zantier (see at 3:50 in his video). I recorded it, along with an amusing (but unusable) glitch. (Edit: the shortcut had been mentionned by TheVoid already.)

Also level 3 can be done even faster, by jumping from the edge of the third rock to keep more speed (a bit harder) and bouncing off the spiders so that there is no need to slow down afterwards.

For the small jump at the end of the level, have you tried to switch hands? Perhaps it would be easier to do a quick tap on the jump key with your right hand. Wink

About the wall jump, I think it is worth it. It can be annoying indeed, but the end of level 1 (moving stones) can be done ~2 s faster with it.

I'll see what I can do with the wall jump. The most annoying spot with it is actually easily avoided with a regular jump, so I will have to try that.

That being said, I believe the wall jump is the difference between NG and NG+, so the runs would be in separate categories and thus both valid.

Also, about that jump off of the spider to land on the higher platform, I was doing that and found it to be really annoying, but if I have to do it to get a better time I will eventually.

Quote from cooopercrisp:
If you can record those runs, I'd be happy to look through them and see what I'm missing, because I have some difficulty getting the times I've gotten now.

If this can help:
