I really enjoyed the rationale for each game in that mega post. (I couldn't find a way to word that without sounding like a suck-up.)

Quote from mikwuyma:
Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III: These are highly-regarded genesis games that deserve at least one marathon. Revenge of Shinobi is a bit more debatable because it's slower and I'll have to see if I can make it consistent enough for a marathon (should be able to), but Shinobi III is just an awesome game and a good watch, so it's in no matter what. BTW, I'm not going to do Shadow Dancer. It's a POS for speedrunning - the slowdown drops a ton of inputs, which combined with one-hit deaths is not cool, also no one gives a shit about this game except maybe for stanski.

You probably expected this, but I just wanted to point out that I love the total 180 here. Not trying to be mean or anything, I'm just amused and slightly frustrated at the same time. Tongue

Speaking of Shinobi though, I'm surprised you didn't mention the Playstation 2 game. Possible character and mode donations, if the player is a real masochist when it comes to practicing. Hopefully nobody is offended by absurd blood sprays?

As for games of my own (done with fancy bold, to follow the trend!):

God Hand: Honestly, the run for Japan Relief Done Quick went FAR better than any of my practice runs (make of that what you will). Ever since then I've been unsure whether or not to try again. I'm far too familiar with the game and all, but I can't help thinking someone could easily pick this game up and do a much better job. For example, I'm sure the other person would be willing to at least practice Hard mode as a donation incentive. In order to avoid a Halo massacre though, I'd strongly suggest that person start practicing very soon.

Long-story short: I'd be willing to do Easy mode again if nobody else wants to take this. Hard mode is extremely unlikely, because bad reflexes (Elvis 2!) just say "haw, no."

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory: I was hoping to spark Tigger's interest in a race, but I don't think it has worked. I'm not even close to as familiar with this game as he is, but I'm definitely willing to practice this. Though I didn't test it for very long at all, it seems a run would involve a lot more stealth than Pandora Tomorrow. I guess that means it would fit into the stealth block better this time around. Normal mode is probably the only choice here, unfortunately.

Other than those two, I don't think I have anything to add outside of joke suggestions (like SOS or Jungle Strike) and pleasepleaseplease (like Chrono Cross or Valkyrie Profile 2), . Some games I have passing interest in learning (Demon's Souls or God of War), but I know better than commit to anything on a whim.

Finally, will you need any spreadsheet ninja help this year? You probably already set one up before even making the topic, but I have crazy free time for the next two months, so...

Quits halfway
That was a lot of reading. My tastes in games are pretty bad so I can't really comment on the choices too much, but seems that's covered already.

Not sure if you'd count them as PC games, but I've been running flash games recently and these might work out for a marathon?

Continuity - Unique puzzler game. It might be confusing to watch, but it's pretty short and fast paced. 4th highest rated puzzle game on Kongregate and winner of the Best Student Game at the 2010 Independent Games Festival.

The Company of Myself - Also kind of unique and at least pretty to watch. I don't think much of the story is left out if you run it although there's not many donation incentives. #1 rated puzzle game on Kongregate, and in the top 20 top rated games for the entire site.

KOLM - Kind of like metroid. It's a pretty interesting game with powerups and stuff. There's any% and 100%, but 100% requires a lot of backtracking at the very end of the game. 100% does have a secret message though. Hasn't won any major awards, but has a more obvious hook and should be fun to watch.

As far as the games I always whine about:

DoS - I think after the SGDQ it'll have been done too much. There's the possibility that I won't do Julius mode at SGDQ and maybe that could be included, but I think it's pretty boring. The only argument for it is there's a large group of people that don't like the DS games except Julius mode.

PoR - I'd pick up J/C and can do either a NG+ with warps (like 4 minutes), NG with warps (like 15 mins?), or NG without warps (50 mins?). NG without warps would be worth doing if I can get the Death skip down, and Satoryu would be able to commentate.

OoE - I could learn NG+ for this, but I think that NG+ runs aren't very well received.

I definitely wouldn't want to do all three, but could do whatever people think will get the best response.

Castlevania HD - Depends on how it goes over at SGDQ. By the time Winter comes around there will probably be strats for every character so it could be a donation challenge thing, but doesn't really matter if this is in or not. It'd be single player only.

Shantae: Risky's Revenge - This sort of has hype around it. It's not too long and I eventually want to do a run of it anyway.

Other stuff that I wouldn't necessarily be doing.

Dark Void Zero - I'm really bad at it, but it's a great retro style game that might have donation challenges.

Gaunlet: Dark Legacy - Maybe a casual game? Might be too long, so Gaunlet Legends could be a better choice. I think that it's one of the best hack n'slashes ever and most people probably remember it well.

If you reject enough of my games, maybe I'll be forced into buying Demon's Souls and trying to learn that >_>

Thinker & Dreamer
(~° ▽ °)~ Talking in theory of me potentially coming, there's a few games I can probably do.

Kid Chameleon - Probably my best game for running. Best would probably be a four-boss run (no bridges/major-skips) and donations for other levels/elsewhere (i.e. Bloody Swamp). Maybe if Peaches_ comes along, we may be even to get a race going, since he's decent at the game as well.

King's Field (U) - I would love to go deeper into this game and run it if there's an opening of sorts. The best way to probably run is just abuse the open-nature of the game and just stock up on a few items and go straight to the final bosses (100% would be awesome as well, but that's too long and no one cares enough about this game for this, probably).

King's Bounty (Genesis) - Would be pretty fun for something short, light-hearted, and different (i.e. a slot filler or something to play in major downtime). The shortest would be a Continentia or an any%/scepter run (or race if anyone else there knows it).

Star Ocean 2 - Bought up as a joke and likely terrible to run even for a graveyard shift; though if you need something, I would love to run it.

I can also throw in some dojin and other obscure games, but it's getting far too niche at that point.
^holy fuck

Yes I'll do Blaster Master again and if somebody can figure out a way for me to play the E version (VC works I'm pretty sure) I can probably do a glitch run (10-15 minutes) on top of the normal run.

Much as I like Metal Storm it'd be a freak if I managed to top my performance last time, that was nearly flawless.

I'd still like to do SNES PoP. 45 minutes.

Cool Spot. 15-20 minutes if I do easy any%.

Dead Space. 4 hours. Graveyard shift? Bidding war for New Game Hard vs New Game+ Impossible?

I'm sure there are people better at Super Metroid than me so I'll leave that to somebody else.

Blaster Master 2 for bad game block?

Out of the games I've been working on, here's what I can do and my thoughts on what would be good for the marathon:

Legend of Mana: No brainer that I'd mention this.  Depending on how RPG saturated things are, it may be ok to pass on it.  Could be a bidding war for storyline, but that means it'll either be anywhere from 2 to 3 hours (Dragon is much shorter then Jumi).

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence: Since I did this for JRDQ, I'd be fine with skipping it, unless you really want it.  I'll kill you AND the night?

The Sky Crawlers: I find it fun, but since it's really obscure, it would probably be a pass.  But some of the later chapters really do get intense.  Could be used as a bidding war for whether I tackle the boss in Mission 17 or just blow out the cannons.  On hard, this would be interesting, I think anyways.

Final Fantasy IV: Interlude: Not as fun as rane's FF4 from last year.  Ok to skip.

Disaster: Day of Crisis: While obscure since it wasn't released in the US, this game is basically one giant disaster film.  Would be a TON of fun to watch, since there's lots of things happening.  Would probably be better on NG+ though, since then I'm not stuck with a pistol for a while.  Rocket launcher + Machine Gun and a dude running in place (major Wiimote/nunchuck waggling)?  Yeah.

Kirby: I'm still wanting to get that any% 4P run in KatAM done.  I don't care if I have to kidnap people and tape their hands to the controller. Tongue  If anybody is interested, I've got the route done, I've got enough copies of the game to cover everybody as well as enough cables.  I just need bodies and systems/GBPs.  The game would be short (under 30min) for a 4P run, probably even having to do a crazy setup.  NiDL would be fun too, but only really for a race.  I know MZ was a bit out of practice, but given all that she was doing for the last marathon, it was totally understandable.  Hopefully romscout won't chicken out. Tongue

ActRaiser: I'm fine with not doing it.  Unless PJ it daring enough to try Special Mode on the Japanese version, but it just amps the difficulty up to 11.  Though given how hard it can be, it would probably result in controller throwing and a mercy kill.

RoB/DXC: Well, as long as either SoTN or DXC happens, it'll fit in with a copy of DXC that I'll be giving away that's signed by Patrick Seitz (the VA for Dracula in DXC, OOE, and Judgment)...though I'd still like a direct race with Satoryu, even if it's off-stream.

No VG, this game doesn't have to happen again, so don't even try unless if you actually learn Richter.

You know it's dangerous to tempt me, Mike.

I'd love to try it, but definitely not for a marathon.  Fewer lives, more spike traps, and longer boss battles = really bad pick for a live run.

Just popping in to say I won't run NiDL again. I love the game but I'd rather have some different ones be showcased. I wouldn't mind being in on the KatAM co-op but I really need a cart, considering I've never played this game. I'm sure I could find one on Amazon or something if it's going to be viable. Six months should be enough to learn and practice the route, with your notes. Smiley
that Metroidvania guy
JMan and I have the cart already and can practice 1/4th of a route. Glad that's settled. Setup time for a 4P KatAM run might be longer than the run itself if it's done well, btw. >_>

I want off the ride....
I am probably going but I will not be offering up any games to this. But if it comes down to it; I will learn ff7. Just like I learned FF4 for AGDQ. If it comes down to it. I have no problem taking the time to sit down and slam my head against a wall learning materia and all that fun jazz for FF7. There isn't much else i'd need to worry about, and from what I know there are enough listings on the game ti shouldn't be a horrible undertaking.

If I am to do this, I would need to know ASAP.

Also if you feel like being royally crazy sir Uyama...

I will also volunteer myself for La Mulana Wii, while i can't say how long it would be atm. It won't be too much longer than the run J has on site. Maybe 3 hrs? This is horrible and just something I am only mentioning and hoping will get passed by.

If something needs to be run by me. I'll just learn KARNOV for the bad* game block. That should be <15 minutes... or at most 20.
I'd love to see some Bomberman in there. I might be biased because I'm learning it, but 64 is really fun to watch. When done right.

A quick question for the European/PAL region runners that go to these marathons: How do you run your games? Do you learn how to cope in NTSC via an emulator or region switching console, or do you find some way to get a PAL console working?

Awesome.  I'll get you guys information later.  I just don't have it on the computer I'm on.  I'll try to write some notes up with it to explain things.  MZ, if you need help finding a cart, I will help find you a cart.  Hell, knowing me I'll probably find you one anyways. Tongue  I can finally get my wish.  Hopefully it'll be good enough to submit? ^^;;

MZ, understandable about NiDL.  It didn't seem to be completely fun for you, since you seemed to be frustrated partially from not getting enough practice in and partially from having to use a GCN controller (which I know sucks for GBA games).  At least, that's what I gathered.  That's part of why I was more then willing to bump up to 100% at the marathon.  The other reason was because it's much more natural for me, since that's what I always do when I play the game.

From the perspective of someone who was merely watching, you deciding to swap to 100% mid-race kind of looked like adding insult to injury more than it looked like you were being magnanimous.

romscout: I hope you realise what you're getting into by agreeing to coop Magicka with me. :>

I didn't swap to 100% mid-race.  As romscout could tell you, I had it planned from the beginning.  It just takes until Area 3 before switches even appear.

Should I expect to see some GTA games? I know last time you said (mike) that they arent too good for charity :p

EDIT: Ocarina of time should be done on the Japanese version so the cutscenes are alot shorter, no point in streaming long cutscenes that you can find everywhere on the internet.
btw im not coming

I sure hope that in the next OoT race, they don't have someone randomly deciding to do 100% instead of MST!

Time estimates will be forthcoming

Dynamite Headdy versions race - Arrow suggested doing a version (NA vs JP) race of this and if he's still willing to do it, I'm game for it as well. It might not be popular enough. Also, the NA and JP version timing points end differently (there's still input in the JP version after beating Dark Demon)

Contra Hard Corps low % - I've recently started attempting some low% runs. So far I've only been able to get the secret ending but once I can get past the Virtual Zone boss I should be able to get through any of the  other endings.

Knuckles' Chaotix - while this is my "specialty" I don't think it would make a good marathon run though I am still willing to run it. The game is a bit repetitive and the zipping glitches many people love cannot be consistently replicated in an SS. Estimated time with buffer: 60 minutes (bad ending)

I can join in the Kirby and the Amazing Mirror fun. I have the cartridge and I've played through the game recently. I have a GBP but no actual GBA though. EDIT: Nevermind. I miscounted. Three people have already joined in.

The difference between 100% OOT and RBA is huge.  The difference between 100% NiDL and any% is like, 6 minutes.

P.S. What the hell is your problem?
.
I didn't say RBA. Also, my point is that entering a race and then changing the category to suit yourself is a dick move. Calm down.

I'd be willing to try to learn FF7 too - if Rane also is maybe he and I could pass the controller back and forth every few hours so the game could be done in 1 shot?

Edit: I'd also be up for learning an MGS game - either MGS1 (PSX version if that's what people want) or MGS3.
SGL Scrublord
Maybe a few of us learn parts of FF7 really hardcore and have a relay run?

I'd like to see reaction to the summer games before I throw my hat into the ring with any repeats of my games already (Demon's Crest and Guardian Legend), but if nothing else my background race offer still stands, i.e. 7th Saga vs a block or two/all the graveyard/poverty games/FF7/etc.
Goatragon!
I can run Metal Combat, either with the Falcon or Tornado on normal difficulty.  I definitely think that this is a gem that should get some attention, it's relatively short, and that oversized plastic contraption deserves its short time in the spotlight.

Also:

Strider (arcade version) - I'm actively practicing this one right now and it would be a very short run and should be.

...and under the bad/poverty games category:

Trio the Punch (Never Forget Me) - I don't know how long ago I stumbled upon this one, but it was nice to know I wasn't the only one who knew about this game or had played it.  Been practicing it a bit lately and I'd be willing to run this one I'd even be willing to race it if anyone else feels inclined.  And I do have a copy of this game for the PS2.

I'm fine with cutting Links Awakening it already got his show twice

Also Splinter Cell Chaos theory race would be a great thing but I not promise that one now have to check the SS capability of that game for me.

EDIT: seems like a TRIO RACE is to come Cheesy
