Yeah, I said it.
He probably thought he could get away with certain things, being Michael Vick's brother. Boy, was he wrong. Tongue
Awesome! football smalltalk in a gaming-site. This is something so refreshing Grin

Cygnus, more than any other field I can think of, football strategy is completely mired in incorrect conventional wisdom, and it only gets worse the lower level football you look at. The only place I've ever seen with intelligent football fans is http://www.footballoutsiders.com/.

You don't know how incredibly surprised I am that I more or less agree with everyone here. And even the things that I kinda disagree with, aren't really worth mentioning.

Well, Vince Young is going pro.  UT's probably not going to be ranked in the top 10 next year, but that's okay.  We have a ton of sophmore/juniors this coming year who are returning (Charles, Taylor, Pittman, Sweed), but our defense backs will need rebuilding.

I expect UT to lose to Ohio State and Oklahoma next year, and possibly Texas Tech.  But they'll be bowl eligible and finish in the top 25.
PwNzRd!
I can't see Vince Young playing for the Saints or Texans, but then again, I don't make millions of dollars playing professional football.

I doubt Texas will lose to Texas Tech next year. TT is always overrated because their offense is well suited to put up a bazillion points on teams like Baylor and Rice and be exposed in any real game.

What the Texans ought to do, of course, is trade down because they need a lot of help. But all indications are that they will take Reggie Bush #1, even though RB is the strongest position on their team. Or perhaps they are just trying to drive up trade value. They almost certainly won't be taking a QB, as they picked up the option on Carr. Apparently they hired all these consultants that assured them that the offensive line and not Carr was the problem, which is not a position I fully agree with.

Anyway, while it makes for good news and ticket sales, all this high draft pick stuff is really overblown. Some sports economist guys did a study that showed that the best draft picks to own are in the 2nd and 3rd round because of value. Because of the way rookie payscales work and cap space and all that, having a high draft pick is almost like an albatross, which explains why some teams keep on staying at the bottom instead of actually improving with their constant high draft picks.
Yeah, I said it.
I wonder who will be ranked #1 in the preseason. Perhaps Ohio State or Notre Dame?

Ohio State.

Good lord, as long as there's not something I don't know about, not Notre Dame. They may have an even greater hype train than Duke gets in basketball, but that would be truly preposterous. People only think they had a great year this year because expectations were low because of their supposedly difficult schedule, instead of actually looking back and seeing how those teams ended up. And has everyone forgotten Ty Willingham's first year already?

ZOMG, Enhasa, you know about Football Outsiders too?  Were we like separated at birth or something? =P

Anyhoo, one thing nobody's pointed out: I believe next year, they're going to rework the collective bargaining agreement so as to limit the amount top draft picks can be paid.  That is most likely why Vince Young, etc., are going pro now...this will be the last year of ridiculous rookie contracts.  As a Browns fan who's had to suffer through Tim Couch, Courtney Brown, Gerard Warren, and Kellen Winslow's motorcycle, I couldn't be happier. =)

Another thing: Houston taking Reggie Bush would basically make Jerome Mathis (the best kick returner in the league this year) nothing more than dead money.  Simply put, drafting Young or Bush is the PR move, and trading down is the smart move.  But a number of NFL teams seek PR more than anything else...does "Mike Nugent in the 2nd round" ring a bell, anyone? =)

Now, I will say that Young would make more sense than Bush, as Domanick Davis is pretty darned good and Carr is Tim Couch 2.0, but neither is the best option.

Personally, from the homer perspective, I'm kinda pissed that my team sucked as little as it did this year.  We need AJ Hawk *badly* and there is no way in hell we are going to get him now.  Basically, we're quite well off at the "skill positions"...Droughns is a solidly above-average back, Braylon improved as the year went on, Bryant is a quality no.2 guy, Frye was clearly better than any of the other first-year starters at QB, and Winslow is the high-risk high-reward X-factor (was a monster talent, but always a "The U"-quality headcase, and how have the injuries affected him?).

Our O-line is the best it's been since we came back (even in our playoff year it was pretty weak) but could still use some more talent, and our defense is full of holes with only a few promising young guys (Andra Davis, Gary Baxter, Leigh Bodden mainly).  So defense and O-line, in that order, is what I'm hoping we address in the draft...Phil Savage has done nice work thus far, and I am thankful that he won the power struggle in Cleveland (as opposed to Collins, the marketing guy who thought he knew football).

That's about it...glad to see some other knowledgeable people here.

To be fair, a good kicker was the only thing the Jets were missing when Doug Brien cost them the playoffs, and Nugent was arguably the best college kicker in years.
spread the dirt to the populace
Yes, as a fellow OSU guy, I remember Nuge's awesomeness.

But here's the thing: The Jets weren't going to be nearly as good in 2005 no matter what happened.

Their success the previous year was heavily based on a ball-control offense, and that wasn't going to work not only because Curtis Martin suddenly got old, but because Kevin Mawae did as well (even before the injury, it was apparent that he had fallen off about as much as Martin).  Maybe Mawae's decline couldn't have been anticipated, but Martin's was highly likely...don't trust almost any RB over the age of 30.  RBs who have career years in or heading into their 30's, especially, are headed for a fall; this year, Tiki was the exception, but Martin and Corey Dillon were the norm.

Additionally, Pennington was a shaky proposition well before the season because of the shoulder thing.  He was always a weak-armed quarterback, then had the injury, while the team signed a new offensive coordinator whose system relies a lot on the deep ball.

So with these and other issues, nobody really should have thought these guys would be headed back into the playoffs.  And as such, the smart move would have been to use that second-round pick on a defensive/skill position guy.  But the Jets fans thought a kicker would make them a Super Bowl contender, and management made the good PR move.

Now, I am not saying anything bad about Mike Nugent here.  I am saying that kickers in general are less important and more difficult to predict than defensive and offensive players.  Look at the record of high-round kickers and you'll see mixed results and very few sticking with their original team.  Essentially, drafting a kicker on the first day is never a good play; in the late rounds it becomes a solid play because guys drafted there mostly become special teamers anyway.

But enough talk.  Have at you!

OK, seriously, this is the last thread hijack from me.

ZOMG Josh!

Browns fan, ouch! At least as a Panthers fan the biggest things I have to worry about nowadays is why Moose left for Chicago, or else we'd be NFC favorites. Oh, and why we're using Foster instead of a real RB. I'm glad the days of Kerry Collins, Rodney Peete, and Chris Weikne (gawd) are over, but c'mon. I'd rather have Tim Biakabutuka at this point.

Aside: There was this girl in high school named Courtney Brown. I used to ask her if she knew she was the #1 overall draft pick, and what'd she think of Cleveland etc. Wink Given that Brown is in fact a man, it's even funnier than, say, Ashley Lelie's name.

From what I've seen, I like McGee myself as best KR.

I think at the very least SeaBass was actually 1st rounded. Maybe if the Jets had selected Ted Nugent... yeah, selecting a kicker shows me you don't understand the concept of individual differences.

I miss the days of Andre Davis in Cleveland, so Andra's jersey would have to actually say ANDRA DAVIS on the back. That was good times.

Uh Josh, I don't think we need to worry about thread hijacking. The Rose Bowl is long over. Wink

I just got an idea though, and it's more gaming-related than this topic at least heh. I think we should form some sort of a SDA fantasy football league next year since apparently there could be enough people interested. My regular private leagues are auction draft now (because it's obviously the way to go), but we could do a normal draft if people aren't that hardcore. In case anybody wants to get an example of what I'm talking about, here is the page for our playoffs fantasy league where we drafted over AIM (I'm Kevin btw). I still have all my guys left, but we'll see how that works out after Saturday. Tongue

Wait wait wait wait wait! Are you saying there are kickers in college football? After watching the Orange Bowl I didn't believe it.
