I'm new to these forums so sorry if I sound a little noobish.

A low-level run in this game would require beating Smithy with Mario at Level 3, Mallow at L4, Geno at L6, Bowser at L8, and Toadstool at L9 (the lowest possible levels).  I've beaten Culex in my own low-level game, so I'd imagine Smithy to be a cinch.

For those who don't know how this is possible, avoid ALL battles except the boss fights until you can buy the lucky jewel (which is eventually replaced with the lucky hammer, as the lucky jewel runs out).  Using the jewel/hammer, choose the "wrong" Yoshi egg after every battle, and you never have to take experience points again.  It can be VERY frustrating when you can't choose the one you want, especially when you have a LONG battle (Culex) or 2 consecutive battles (Boomer and Exor).  Although I got lucky and chose correctly on my first try for my fights with  Johnny, MegaSmilax, Queen Valentina, Birdo, and Culex (thank God!!!).

There are very few strategies for a low-level run without the speeding.  For a speed run, the only reasonable strategy would be to master the "freebies" trick with Rock Candies and Red Essences.  The Star Egg is out of the question because of how long it takes to acquire.  Rock Candy will do 300 damage from someone who uses an energizer, or is equipped with Quartz Charm.  I think I'd rather stockpile energizers than fight Culex.

Once I can perform the "freebies" trick perfectly with Rock Candy and Red Essence, I'll attempt this run.

Good luck. I've done the low level game (not a speedrun, I'm not that insane), and I know how frustrating it is to get the get the wrong (right?) egg or when the egg challenge is the coin one, not the Exp. I hope you keep your sanity during the run, becuase I'd very much like to see it.
Damn dude. I never heard of the freebie trick, but good stuff if there's a way to do it. This sounds really cool. Good luck.
Maybe you should do a separate run where you get experience from necessary battles (and maybe stars) because it might be faster than the current run.

I would absolutely love to see this done.  This llg has always interested me, but I would never have the patience to put up with the random lucky egg part, even if I could possibly survive the bosses. :/

The lucky egg isn't difficult. You just follow the egg with your eyes, nothing random about it. I can get yoshi almost everytime. I imagine the black bird thingy would be the same.

BTW, how do you do the freebie trick?

Time the X button as if you were timing a timed hit.  If done right, you get an extra of the item you just used.

Jack of all Trades
I tried this challenge. If you look at the files at the beginning of my SMRPG run you'll see I'm saved in Bowser's Keep at level 3. I never got past the double bosses of Boomer/Exor because of the dumb shell game which, in my experience, is completely random and not tied to the images of the yoshi/shadow at all.
A run like this will never be faster than a normal run because you have to spend a lot of time at the beginning powering up Mario's jump so you can get so far in the game and not get rocked by bosses.

Another of my experiences is that pulling off consistent freebies is something only an emulated run can manage. But if you find that you can do that then you can use the emu strategy and blow my run out of the water.

spezzafer used this nifty chart:

does that help for a low level game? i cant quite tell whats what, but i know he used it for the new TAS he did...
Fucking Weeaboo
If you can pull it off similiar to the Time Attack run, I'll give you a medal.  Freebee special items is not easy, I know.
