I think we should make one big list with all these videos. The TC could edit his first post perhaps?

I will update that soon. I'm working on a route, too.

I didn't find the Bowser battle glitch, so credit goes to whomever posted it to YouTube.
Now, for a shortcut of my own creation:

Freezeflame Galaxy: Hot and Cold Collide

In the one planet, you need a fire flower to ignite torches to activate the next star cannon.  You're supposed to run around the enclosure, then turn a screw switch while the lavas down to open the gates.  You can get in with a backflip-spin combo, and out again with a backflip-wall jump.  This can be done fast enough to get both torches.

Estimated time saved - 15-30 seconds

Y'a donc ben des mongols
I finally have the 120 stars, so I can finally try finding some shortcuts! Here are 5 new ones Cheesy They mostly shave a few seconds, but the toy time and deep dark ones are definitly nice time savers.

Battlerock - topmaniac and the topman tribe

You can use the ? block, it's muuuch easier.

Space junk - pullstar path

Shaves a few seconds

Bowser's second castle (dark matter)

Because waiting for platforms is totally useless.

Deep Dark galaxy - the underground ghost ship

This one was discovred by Tateroverlord at gamefaqs (wow, something good at gamefaqs o_O)

Toy Time galaxy - Heavy metal mecha-bowser

Now, this one is my favorite Cheesy

edit: I think that's the fastest way of climbing the spire in melty mountain galaxy. The first shortcut was obviously a regular one XD

Yeah, I said it.
I've decided that Buoy Base is the coolest galaxy in the game, just for the music.

Tricks collection

11 minutes of tricks; some useless, some useful, enjoy. Smiley

There are several times where I use a method I found to get up slopes that normally you'd slide down; a bit more useful than the other way imo because you don't need to get Mario running on top of it first plus it's easier to jump from it. Get Mario sliding in the sitting position, then jump toward the direction he's sliding; spin in midair and move back. Repeat to make it up the slope.

1:48: If you can make that jump, then you can skip pretty much the entire level. Too bad the camera decides to suddenly change its angle RIGHT before you jump so you can't see where you're going or how close you are to making it. Angry

10:47: messing around after making this clip I found you don't even need to jump over the fire thing at the beginning; just long jump off to the right as soon as you land and you should land near the spotlight.

Also, since the Sunken Treasure/Freezeflame's Blistering Core tricks are in this vid as well, the other vids have been removed.
Useful trick for fighting Megaleg.

You can backflip over the rotating walls it puts up to protect the star.  Time it right, and Bullet Bill will follow you over, allowing you to get the star without having to get a shot through a hole in the wall.

I thought that was the normal way to do it Shocked
Huh?

Okay, maybe it isn't such a good trick...  I thought the idea was to blow a hole in the wall and get Bullet Bill through.  After all, why else make the wall destroyable?

On the 2nd star in Good Egg Galaxy on that capsule shaped planet you can use a backflip plus spin at the start to save some time.

I have found a MAJOR time saver in deep dark galaxy - Bubble blast off.

Usually you need to:

- Kill the mole
- Fire the cannon to the left planet to get the fire flower
- Light the lanterns to get the ice flower
- skate to the little water thingies
- Climp up

with my method:

- You say screw you to the mole
- You say screw you to the cannon
- You say screw you to the fire flower and ice flower
- You say screw you to the climbing part (a bit)

So overall, I'd say you can cutoff around 2 minutes if you were really fast doing the regular path Tongue

But the place just seemed sooo obvious, it's like Nintendo is begging people to skip some parts Tongue

here's the video:

Well you are not supposed to die hah XD But I died right next to the Fludd that sends you to the next planet.

Allright, I just got all 120 stars with Mario, so I'm allowing myself to read this topic, and this shortcut caught my eye, because I actually found what should be a quicker way through there during my normal playthrough because in this level I could not, for the life of me, find that damned ice flower (or at least fast enough that I didnt start thinking like all the speedrun movies I see on here train me to).

Anyway, I'm too lazy to actually get my video capture card working but its simple enough to explain, especially using the above video for reference.  Watch the video above, pause it at 0:12, you should see bridge-like piece of land, see the left part of it?  Theres a ledge just beneath it.  Triple-jump, spin, wall-jump, spin, gets you up there.

I'm serious, thats how I beat the level playing through it normally.  I didnt see it posted here (admittedly I havnt checked ALL videos here yet so sorry if its already been shown).

I'm very much looking forward to seeing a run of this game in the future, especially a 120 star run, if its even possible to do that within SDA's time limit.

Hmm. Damn there are so many shortcuts it will be difficult to list them all.

I just took a looks at the ones shown here and that's already a mouthful.

Actually, the easiest way is to just jump into the spinning flame to knock Mario up.

Over on the BioShock speed run threads, I made a Wiki (using Wikia "scratch" wikis) for keeping track of stuff.  People seemed to like it.  It gave us a place to stick stuff and forget about it until it was needed.  And it wasn't too hard to get going.

(It was particularly nice for BioShock, because in order to run it, you need to know which audio messages to let play and which ones to skip.  And there are a metric ton of audio messages.)

I highly recommend it.

EDIT: To be clear: I don't plan on doing this for Super Mario Galaxy.  I don't even own a Wii.  And I've already got one Wiki I'm shepherding.  But I highly recommend you guys do it. Smiley
A wiki is a great idea due to the nature of this sort of speed run.

We can keep pages for individual levels and sections for videos or text of tricks.

I'm currently on my second playthrough, where I focus on looking for timesavers.

Good Egg Galaxy - Star 2

Just long jump into the center to grab the Star. No need to use the blue orbs.

I'll set one up.

@ZFG: I was trying to do that and I didn't quite make it.
MrGrunz is a guay
You can triple jump + spin to the top of the house in GEG.Saves good time on the 3rd star and can get the secret star in less than 10 seconds(If its gotten in a run).Sorry if this is already well known but I didn't see it posted.Other than that, I haven't found anything good exept some things in TTG that paraxade posted in his tricks vid.
You can skip getting the first key in "Matter Splatter Mansion". The secret star in Ghostly Galaxy. To do it you need to backflip and wall kick  off the door and then spin and you should go over it.

I just uploaded a vid of this, and then rewatched Paraxade's Trick collection vid and saw that he had already found it.  I'll keep the vid up because I skip the key a different way and there is a 2nd trick in it that saves several seconds.

Speed Running Joy-bringer
Wow. That diagonal long jump is quite a find there. It could end up being a bit timely but effective.
It's-a me, Stalin!
I've found so many tricks, I'll run this when there's a route. I bought this last night, and I now have 35 stars.

I just ran straight towards the house from the start, did a triple jump and a spin, and that was all it took.

I think I found a trick that could be usefull.
It basically consists of making a spin in the air and use the but stomp while the spin animation isn't done yet, if done correctly mario will end up on the ground but instead of hitting the ground with his butt he uses his feet and put his hands in the air.
The funny thing is that when you use it on an enemy and mario is not right above him there is a chance he will be pulled towards the enemy (Some kind of homing attak). So far not realy that usefull. Tongue
BUT if you use it on a npc so mario uses the homing kind, he will bounce off, but sometimes the distance it gives you is MORE then a longjump+spin! (And after you bounce off you can use the spin, so even further.) Doesn't that makes this trick the longest jump mario can do?
I have not yet found a good use for it, but I'm shure someone will. Grin

Y'a donc ben des mongols
it is indeed a really long jump.. but I was only able to make it work perfectly 1/5 times :S Mario seems to bounce in random directions too... Maybe I'm doing something wrong :p

edit: I made a "speed-run" of "infiltrating the dreadnought". It really is just a showcase of all the tricks in the stage.

Here's is where I screwed up majorly:

The first huge gravity jump: you are supposed to be able to reach the star.

The green elevator part: I missed a backflip, and that made me miss the walljumping walls, so I lost a lot of time there.

The last pillar: for some reasons I forgot which side to take.

Still, at least all the tricks are in the same video XD

Two notes on "hidden moves/controls" that I haven't seen posted here(although I assume others have already figured this out):

1) If you hit Z to stomp immediately after you spin while in the air, it does a short range homing stomp.  I mean it is really short range, but basically it guarantees you'll stomp something right next to you instead of just missing it.  It also has faster recovery time once you land it, although it takes longer to wind up.  So, it doesn't really save any time, it just moves the delay to the beginning of the stomp instead of after you land.

2) If you are in a cannon you can hold down Z and move your wii-mote back and forth to zoom in and out.
Now a hit show on the CW
I'm excited to see that so many tricks/shortcuts are already being discovered... looking forward to watching the first speed run of this Smiley I don't have a lot to contribute yet, but here's a small trick for Dusty Dune Galaxy - Blasting Through the Sand/Sandblast Speed Run: At the very beginning when you kill the five small pokeys and then have to kill the larger one, you can kill the big one in a single hit if you jump and spin attack its head. Kind of obvious, but easy to overlook (I didn't figure it out until doing the comet).

Anyone planning a 60 star route yet? As unreliable as they are, most of the Cosmic comet levels seem relatively short compared to other levels.
