It does seem like there is a lot potential for minor speed tricks in this game.  I just got it today and haven't put much time into it yet. However, it looks like the combination of side somersaults/backward somersaults + wall jumps + spin jumps can be abused a lot to get up to higher platforms quickly.
I found a time saver in "Luigi on the Roof" (Good Egg Galaxy) If you go over to the house that Luigi is stuck on and do a black flip on the side of it Mario can do a wall jump and then do the spin move. You should make it onto the top of the roof and then you only have to talk to Luigi to get the Power Star.
Yeah, I said it.

I just ran straight towards the house from the start, did a triple jump and a spin, and that was all it took.

I have found a small shortcut at the end of "infiltrating the dreadnought" in the dreadnought galaxy. It's not much, but in a 120 stars run every seconds count right? Tongue

P.S. It's only a shortcut when you don't retry the trick 5 times like I did -_- And yeah, my camera sucks

P.P.S I'm new around here, although I've been visiting the website for a long time.

anyways if I find other tricks like that I'll upload them to youtube, enjoy.

I found another time saver in Good Egg Galaxy in the "Dino Piranha Speed Run" mission. Run over to the tower with a Luma up there, above it is a Launch Star. If you backflip over him and do a spin attack you should be able to reach the Launch Star skipping talking to the Luma.

True, but to backflip without provoking the option to talk to the luma is rather difficult, however, if you land and continue to run behind the luma for a short distance to put you into the dashing animation you can change direction and do a side jump to accomplish the same effect with much more ease.  I'm currently working on a good speed run for Dino Piranha.  I can make it with 2:15 left on the clock as of now, but I keep screwing up so much.  I'm sure I can get it to about 2:30.  I'll let you know when I'm done. So far I found a lot of functionality in sliding while crouched.  If you do a long jump and hold Z while in air so that when they hit the ground they instantly crouch you will slide while crouched.  Fortunately, while sliding you can use DI to turn you in a very large variety of directions and given that you still have momentum when you've chosen a direction you can then press A to continue another long jump.  I can make just about a 160-170 degree turn using this method without breaking long jumps.

You can also use other moves in succession to the crouch technique, which I will now call a Crouch Hook for lack of a better name.  For example, I use this technique in Dino Piranha for the planet that has the invisible mob on it.  As soon as I hit the planet I begin running straight up, which I follow up very quickly with a long jump.  The jump sends me to the other side where I land on the first cement square of the pair of square separate from the structure.  I do another long jump out of the crouch to position myself as close to the structure as possible while being under the block sliding in and out on the platform above.  (Here's the tricky part.)  As soon as I land there I Crouch Hook to make myself facing the opposite direction of the structure and wait until right after my momentum has stopped, then I do a backflip to land on the sliding block.  From there it's one quick jump up to the crystal and then two spins.

If done right I can be off that planet in about 10 seconds or so.  Of course this is only one example of how to use such a thing.  There are many other applications and many other moves that can be done out of the crouch.  For instance the side jump can be done out of the crouch.  Also due to the lack of friction on ice levels this tech can allow you to turn in a complete 360 degrees offering you many many possibilities of using the Crouch Hook.

How did you do this glitch?  In the video you say Bowser landed on a green thing.  What green thing?  One of the green elevated circles?  In what way did he hit it?  Have you been able to recreate it?  If you could get the whole thing on video that would be awesome.  Any information would be good, thanks.  Grin

New trick:

Hopefully no one has found this yet, because then I'd feel like an idiot.

Spin-cancel - Perform a jump right after a spin within a small time frame. You will jump after the beginning of the spin. The effectiveness of this is that it removes the cooldown of your next spin. Therefore you can spin, jump, and spin again performing two spins in about half a second.

This could be applied in a few places, unfortunately due to the nature of boss fights not requiring a lot of damage, it won't have much use there, but does anyone remember the big crystals that require two spins to break, where the first only cracks it? Normally you have to wait for your spin cooldown, but with the spin-cancel you can break it very quickly.

Just thought I'd post this since I figured it out on the game and was pretty excited.

I was randomly playing through that level and by accident I simply did either a regular jump or a long jump (more likely) while running up to the star, and bounced on top and proceeded to do a spin and the Launch Star, skipping the luma very quickly.

So this can actually be done with speed, making it a worthwile time saver. Just practice an approach with a long jump or any other kind of jump that lands you on top of the Luma, it shouldn't be too hard.

Yeah, I was playing around with the idea of jumping on the luma and then spinning, but when you long jump to get to the top of the tower it's difficult to land on him due to the fact you can't adjust the camera too much, however if you land in just the right spot before you get to the top you can reach high enough to spin and get the launch star without ever touching the top of the tower.  However it's a slim margin to go by, just like the luma.  Now that you've told me about the spin cancel I'm going test it out to see if I can get the extra boost required to bypass jumping on the luma/backflipping/sideflipping/risking a super high jump.

Good post.  Thanks.  Wink

he just linked to it, it's not his video. Tongue Looks like it was a random one-time glitch. I think the green things are the things that are like small platforms that Bowser can break that give you a coin.

All I can say about the Luma skip is that I completely randomly and with an amount of luck that I can't measure yet happened to perfectly long jump on to the Luma and bounce and spin and shoot off, so who knows how hard that is.

Also, the spin cancel I'm quite sure cannot give you extra height, as a spin has to be done on the ground to be canceled. Therefore it won't get you any higher that a normal jump-spin, unless there's a way to double-jump, in which case a jump-spin-jump-spin would be entirely possible with the cancel.

Something else to note is that I have been practicing co-op mode and along with being able to pick up star bits, the 2nd player can stop bullets like Neo (among other projectiles), freeze a lot of enemies, pause tiles that shrink and disappear, shoot star bits, make Mario jump, and make him spin.

However the 2nd player's spins are different. I remember they have a bit more colorful animation, and while they can't be done if the 1st player's spin is on cooldown they can do the following:

-Two successive spins in the air, and
-An instant triple jump if the 1st and 2nd player both jump at the same time.

The applications likely widespread. My sister, who plays co-op with me, has saved me numerous times with double air-spins for extra height, and it can allow you if I remember the usage correctly to reach places you normally couldn't.

The instant triple jump is obviously of great use for large jumps. Unfortunately it requires machine-like timing between two players, but in a run it could be perfected.
I found a time saver in Ghostly Galaxy, and the mission for it is "Luigi and the Haunted Mansion." The time saver is at the start of the level. In the area with three Goomba's with jack-o-lantern heads there's a rock to the right, break it open for a star. Run into the star and run through the level up to the point where there are two Boos in the room and one of them has a key inside of them. Run into that one and grab the key. This skips turning on the light and having them to run through it.

Good luck.  I found it to be difficult.

I have found a MAJOR time saver in deep dark galaxy - Bubble blast off.

Usually you need to:

- Kill the mole
- Fire the cannon to the left planet to get the fire flower
- Light the lanterns to get the ice flower
- skate to the little water thingies
- Climp up

with my method:

- You say screw you to the mole
- You say screw you to the cannon
- You say screw you to the fire flower and ice flower
- You say screw you to the climbing part (a bit)

So overall, I'd say you can cutoff around 2 minutes if you were really fast doing the regular path Tongue

But the place just seemed sooo obvious, it's like Nintendo is begging people to skip some parts Tongue

here's the video:

Well you are not supposed to die hah XD But I died right next to the Fludd that sends you to the next planet.

Good job with that Smiley
Yeah, I said it.
Very simple timesaver that's easy to miss...

Beach Bowl Galaxy, the third star. From the start of the Cyclone Stone, you can skip a decent part of the beginning by jumping "southwest," to a platform with a 1-up mushroom.
Honeyhive Galaxy - 4 "Trouble on the Tower" speed tricks.

Tricks 1 and 2 are on the same path toward the launch star.  Tricks 3 and 4 are on an alternate path.  I think the alternate pathway might be the fastest way to get to the launch star.  I didn't time it though.
Welcome new galaxy!
Although very linear (spelling mistake, I guess, but I'm swedi0sh ^^), this could be a great speed run. My Wiis in germany now, got overheated. And I got the game yesterday.  Bad luck, won't you say? XD

Here's a shortcut you can take in freezeflame galaxy - secret star (the summit)

lets you skip some boulders and snowmen.

I think we should make one big list with all these videos. The TC could edit his first post perhaps?
