Yeah, 61-star with Luigi is my plan.  Good luck, and take your time to practice and hone your skills before starting anything.

Regarding my route planning, I tested the 'find Luigi' stars a little bit more, hoping to get Honeyhive Luigi before Battlerock Luigi.  I got to Luigi's second letter without even opening the Battlerock Galaxy.  However, the letter still showed the picture of him in Battlerock; then I went to Battlerock and he was there.  So I guess that idea didn't work.

Also, uh... today I realized that holding A during a jumping spin makes you go higher.  That might help somewhat. >_>
Quote from yoshifan:
First I'm going to try doing a single-segment run.  If that's looking really grim, then I may change to a segmented run.  It's hard to say right now, since I've never tried an SS run nearly this long.  I really want to make this an SS, but I want to be realistic as well - if it were easy, someone would've submitted a run by now.

If you really plan on doing both a single-segment and a segmented run, you should probably consider doing the segmented one first. After making a crapload of attempts for each section of the game, you'll have enough practice to quickly move on to an SS. Also, it's a lot easier to stumble upon an overlooked time-saver if you focus on one part of the game at a time. It'd be painful for you to find out that you missed a couple of time-savers after completing and possibly submitting a successful single-segment run. More importantly, with a segmented run, you'll be able to upload your attempts and get feedback from various people, if you're into that

I might hook up my Wii to help you with the route planning. Glad this is finally getting done  Smiley
My original thinking was that I wanted to do just one speedrun for now (meaning... this year, probably), and I thought I would try a SS because that was more impressive in my eyes.  That said, though, you bring up some very good points about doing a segmented run first.  I was worried about missing timesavers that people already knew about, especially obvious ones.  Getting feedback on each segment would definitely minimize that, and it would be great (for both me and Galaxy fans at SDA) to submit the first Galaxy run with confidence in the strategies.

Also, I feel like I should have considered segmenting sooner, because I was planning to practice for the SS in a segment-by-segment fashion all along. Smiley  I hope I don't seem like I'm changing my mind suddenly, but doing a segmented run first seems like such a natural choice now that I think I'll do it.

In case anyone's wondering or even cares, I'm working on my route and when each segment will begin and end, it might be a week or two (maybe even longer but I doubt it) since I'm pretty busy this next week, not to mention school will be starting next Thursday. Cry

Edit: I think the best way to go through this run is to do every level as fast as possible, and "star-bit gather" whenever I need to instead of getting like 70 or so star-bits on every level. Does anyone have any idea on what the fastest level is to get the most star-bits? I'll try and look into it if anyone doesn't know...
I care. I would very much like to see a run sometime. So good luck! I believe in you. Take as much time you need! Good things comes to those who wait!
And don't be so sad. School is fun. At least if it's... College, I believe they call it in English?

I think this is the best plan, although of course you'll want to grab star bits when you're flying around and can't control Mario anyway. I remember that places to get star bits quickly were discussed early in the thread, but that was a while ago, so you'll have to dig for it unless someone else remembers the details.

If you have any tips or suggestions, I'd be glad to hear 'em Smiley

Quote from Mr. Piggy:
I'm not sure but I think I get taken back to Rosalina after sweet sweet galaxy....

That's correct.  I believe these are all the events that take you back to Rosalina:

- After Bee Mario Takes Flight (meet the Toad Brigade)
- After getting 13 stars (unlocks comets)
- After Luigi and the Haunted Mansion (meet Luigi)
- When Luigi's first letter arrives (for subsequent ones, you have to go to the Mailtoad yourself)
- After your first green star
- After your last green star
- After Gateway's Purple Coins
- After any Bowser/Bowser Jr. level (6)
- After any Hungry Luma star (7)
- After any Trial Galaxy stars (3)
- After getting 60 stars
- After getting 120 stars

When possible, overlapping these events would be a neat idea.  For example, you could overlap a Hungry Luma star with the arrival of Luigi's first letter, or do Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor as your 60th star.

As for route improvements, I noticed that you picked all of the initially-available Terrace stars as stars 2 through 10.  You could try skipping one of these stars at first, so that you can do both of the Terrace comets in just one visit to the Terrace later: (1) Good Egg comet, (2) the star you skipped earlier, (3) Honeyhive comet.

Also, for the Fountain and on, it would be good to leave at least 2 or 3 stars in each dome until the Purple comets appear, for the same reason: to get all the comets in a single dome visit.  It's trickier to manage stars in the Terrace, but I guess it could go something like (1) Good Egg Purple comet, (2) Luigi in Honeyhive, (3) Honeyhive Purple comet.  I'm getting a little ahead here though.

Ok so for now i took out the earlier segment 7 and 8 so I would be leaving 3 stars in the Terrace (Dino Piranha speed run, sweet sweet galaxy, and honeyhive cosmic Mario race) I changed the route so I would go to one of the bowser boss battle's on star 13. I also removed a fountain level from the route to leave for later (topmaniac daredevil run). I changed the route a little bit & I think it will work, but now I'm gonna make a new file to see if the route works so far with these changes.

Thanks for the tips yoshifan, and please tell me if there's anything I should change on the new route.

*It would be nice to combine segments 3 and 4, but I'm not good with ray surfing, or anything to do with water in this game for that matter.
Quote from Mr. Piggy:

Well, when I said leave one of the Terrace stars, I meant one of the stars within the Terrace dome, such as King Kaliente's Battle Fleet.  You'd have to exit and re-enter the Terrace dome if you use Sweet Sweet.  It's a fairly minor time issue, but just thought I'd point it out anyway.
Quote:

15 stars are needed to enter Bowser's Star Reactor.  The wiki has the entry requirements for each galaxy, in the "Levels" section.  Though, some of the ?-block galaxies may have inaccurate requirements listed.  I can update those later.
Quote:

Pick a non-comet star instead - the idea is that comets (purple or otherwise) only show up at every other star, so in order to get through 2 comets, you'd have to do 1 non-comet star in between.  To get through 3 comets, you'd have to do 2 non-comet stars in between.

Now I feel like an idiot, but I think I changed the route again to fit the "rules" I'll look it over again later when I have time.
Well, there's just a lot to consider, and I know that the old 61-star route plan encountered several bumps at first.  Don't let it discourage you.

Ok, now i changed segments 5-8 so now everything should work...30 stars=1/4 of the way done, woo! I'm hoping to end up with at most 40 segments, hopefully less, but I might split the prologue into 2 segments so I only have to go through the festival once, & I might split another segment up in the first 8, so that would be 10 segments for 30 stars, or if you average that out 40 segments for 120 stars, but hopefully I'll end up with less than 40 segments.

On another note, does anyone know if you need to put a level in between every purple comet too? Or can you just play 2 purple coin levels back-to-back? I'm just trying to plan ahead here to make sure all the levels & comets work out.

One more question... There's a tricky jump on beach bowl galaxy level 3 on the part with the thwomps that you can do. There's a certain spot that you can longjump+spin+walljump+spin to get to the star a lot faster, but I'm pretty sure this trick can only be done with Luigi, because I've only seen a video of it done with Luigi and I've tried it many times with Mario & I can't quite make it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or has anyone ever done this with Mario. I'm pretty sure the vidoe of it with Luigi was somewhere in this thread but I don't remember what page, I'll try and find it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can't play 2 purple comets in a row.  You need a level in between.

For Beach Bowl 3, it's quite a difficult jump, but it has been done with Mario: .  I tried it a little while ago, and I wasn't able to make it either, though I didn't know about holding A while spinning to go slightly higher.

Also, I'll propose a 61-star route pretty soon.  There's just one more thing I'd like to look at first.
In the infinite
Thanks for the link, that's exactly what I was talking about Smiley I need to practice that.

I left "Luigi on the Roof" to go between the two purple comets in the Terrace, so that should work out...

& I'll try and leave a level in every dome to go between the purple comets from now on, thanks for the info yoshifan.

When are you doing Luigi in Honeyhive, then?

There should be 3 visits to the Terrace:

1. Initial visit
2. Luigi on the Roof + 2 comets
3. Luigi in Honeyhive + 2 comets

Crap! I totally forgot about "Luigi in Honeyhive". I'll have to add "Luigi on the roof" in to an earlier segment. I'll figure it out eventually.

Various notes:

- I actually fleshed out three full routes (mainly characterized by having Battlerock 2-4, Toy Time 1,2,4,6, or both) and then compared them as carefully as I could.  The route I picked was only very slightly faster (5-10 seconds) than the other two, so slight that it may as well be the same since my star timings could easily have biases or errors.  However, this route also has the easiest comet manipulations of the three routes.

- The dividers between stars indicate places where I will most likely segment.  There are other possible segment spots that I've noted, mainly places where I'm not sure if I'll need the extra ease or optimization from segmenting.  Still, I have a feeling that it's all going to be tougher than it looks on paper, so some easier segments wouldn't hurt.

- The route's Hungry Luma stars are Sweet Sweet, Sling Pod, and Drip Drop, requiring 400 + 400 + 600 = 1400 star bits.  From tests, I have an idea of how many star bits I can get from each level at full speed.  My targets of concern - 800 by Sling Pod and 1400 by Drip Drop - should be rather doable without slowing down.  And with at least a rough level-by-level breakdown, I'll know when to concentrate more or less on star bits as I progress through the run.

- To unlock the Garden, there's about 30 extra seconds of cutscenes and dialogue (compared to getting a normal star), then about 35 seconds to get to the Garden, and Lava Reactor is a somewhat long star in itself (around 2:00).  Deep Dark stars are pretty short, but not short enough to cancel out these losses, I'm pretty sure.
In the infinite
The 2nd & 4th to last segment seem pretty long, but I guess with enough practice you could get through them without any major mistakes, otherwise it looks pretty good, but I don't know much yet since I've only planned my route into the kitchen Tongue
Yeah, those two long segments might end up being unrealistic.  Actually, the Bedroom segment doesn't seem quite that bad, since Freezeflame stars are pretty managable for the most part.  The main worries there (for me) would be Gusty Garden's Gravity Scramble and Bowser's Dark Matter Plant, and the latter may be due to lack of practice.  The Engine Room segment is more intimidating, though - some tricky jumps in Gold Leaf (though the Star 2 flower jumps don't seem necessary, thankfully), possible surface spinning in Sea Slide, and the Mecha-Bowser level seems prone to errors.

Anyway, I'm leaning more towards putting Battlerock in the route, since I realized that would give me enough early stars to put off the second Terrace visit until later, getting Luigi on the Roof in the same visit.  This would mean:
- I'd save a visit to the Terrace.
- Since Luigi on the Roof can be my between-Terrace-comets star, I could also replace Good Egg 3 (my current between-Terrace-comets star) with a shorter star from anywhere, like Sea Slide 6.  The question is, then, whether Battlerock should replace Toy Time or something else.
In the infinite
Well my Wii broke today so it might be a while before I can do anything with this run Tongue

Good luck yoshifan! Smiley

Ah... ouch.  Well, hope you can get it fixed without too much hassle.

I updated my 61-star route, the main change being replacing 4 Toy Time stars with 4 Battlerock stars.  Now that I've done that, though, I realize it might be beneficial to re-add the Toy Time stars in place of 4 other stars - something like Space Junk 3, Sling Pod, Good Egg comet, and Sea Slide 6.  I'll really have to do more testing at this point, including (1) seeing if I have the star bits for Drip Drop, replacing yet another longer star, and (2) seeing if I can really manage to skip the Good Egg comet.

EDIT: if anyone wants to help out here, I'm interested in knowing how comets behave in general, both when playing in a single session and when segmenting.  Basically, I'm looking at a route that skips the Good Egg comet while getting the Honeyhive one, and skips the Space Junk comet while getting the Battlerock one.  It would be good to know how to plan a route around this, using knowledge of the rules instead of just trying out a bunch of different plans.

I don't mean to be a dick, but what's the point in posting this?
