nemi: If you can get the level under 2 minutes it could be worth it.  I forget how long the secret star is in comparison to the normal star, but if it can be done under two minutes it could be good.  The trouble is that the comet medal would unlock the really short boulder bowl comet, but then that would force you to do the shortcut with rock mario, which doesn't seem very reliable.  However, it sounds like a good idea for segmented.
UchihaSasuke: You need rock mario for the boss and to get a goomba for the secret star IIRC.
I just did a test run of Rock and Rollodillo and got a time of 1:54.21 with Mario. This time includes getting the Comet Medal and watching all cutscenes. Also, a somewhat easier way of doing the shortcut is to start rolling from where the Pinheads are instead of from the ramp.

marsonioic: I've been playing around with the Rock Mushroom trick, and I've gotten fairly consistent with it. The easiest method I could find is to repeatedly press the A button and start shaking the nunchuck immediately thereafter. I can get a lot of height this way. For a single-segment run, I'd be willing to try it on Rock and Rollodillo but not C'mere Goomba.

For C'mere Goomba, if Luigi appears in Boulder Bowl at a consistent time, it's definitely worth doing. When I did a run from the beginning of the game, Luigi appeared in Boulder Bowl at 50 stars, but I tried this only once.
DK + Mario Kart 8 = <3
i figured out if you do the stars where you teleport to the engine room, with luigi you are teleport to the main platform and must not watch the cutscene or rather go to the platform this saves maybe 30 seconds or so.

i did Spring into the Chompworks with luigi and teleport to the main platform and switch to mario.
Nice!  I never thought to try that.
DK + Mario Kart 8 = <3
okay guys i finished 242 stars today with

and here some thing for the route

the stars where you are teleport to the engine room, you can some of them do with luigi to save time you first warp to the engine room and immediately teleport to the main platform and switch to mario

Cloud Flower - Complete "Search for the Toad Brigade Captain" in the Fluffy Bluff Galaxy. impossible luigi is first time in world 3
Rock Mushroom - Complete "Rock and Rollodillo" in the Boulder Bowl Galaxy. impossible luigi is first time in world 3
Spring Mushroom - Complete "Spring into the Chompworks" in the Chompworks Galaxy. possible and you should to this star without spring mushroom
Spin Drill - Complete "Silver Stars Down Deep" in the Spin-Dig Galaxy. impossible luigi is first time in world 3
Bee Mushroom - Complete "The Sweetest Silver Stars" in the Honeyhop Galaxy. possible really hard to do without bee mushroom
Boo Mushroom - Complete "Haunting the Howling Tower" in the Boo Moon Galaxy. not possible idk why luigi wasn´t here
Fire Flower - Complete "Burning Upside Dizzy" in the Upside Dizzy Galaxy. possible

another thing is the current route says

68 Puzzle Plank: Purple Coin Shadow Vault
69 Tall Trunk: Tall Trunk's Purple Coin Slide
70 Haunty Halls: Spooky Cosmic Clone Chase

    Segment 23

71 Flip-Swap: Purple Coin Flip n' Sprint

    Segment 24

72 Shiverburn: The Chimp's Ultimate Skating Challenge

but i have played and flip swap star is before tall trunk star and shiver burn star is before haunty halls, maybe we should do rolling masterpiece comet instead of haunty halls or switch them

and the last thing is with the green stars if you can you should do the green stars in wrong order if you can

for example select Hightail Falls Galaxy green star 1 and then do green star 3 if you go back and select green star 1 you can skip the cutscene every time maybe save 2 seconds or so
THIS RUN CONTAINS SECRET WORLDS
Holy crap, this may mean sub-12 hours for 100% may happen in the near future! Was this all in one sitting? Also, how long did it take you to get the last star in Grandmaster Galaxy?
DK + Mario Kart 8 = <3
no it wasn´t in one sitting i have did this run with the route on the knowledge base

the last star took me like 10 or 20 attempts not much

and yes you can sub 12 easily the run wasn´t perfect with perfect strats it should be 11:00 or 11:30 maybe with luck sub 11
GWAHAHAHAHA!
Ah, that was my route. I was planning to use it in the future, but you did a good job. Once I get off my couch and onto SMG2, I'll try my best to beat that. But I take 50-80 attempts on the last star, I really need to work on it.
DK + Mario Kart 8 = <3
yes but the route must be revise because of the thing with tall trunk comet and haunty halls comet etc.

i wish you luck to beat that if i go to this game in the future i will sub 12 Smiley

Hey, have you seen the new shortcut of Bowser's Gravity Gauntlet? Video is done by Datteo1, not me.

It save about 25-30 seconds Smiley Important time saver for speedrun.
That's not new, I found that a few days after the game came out. Tongue That's a pretty nice run though.
Speedrunner and highscore player
Ah, my bad. Nice found Smiley

Small speedtrick for Melty Monster Galaxy GS3

Not very important, but cool for 242 star speedrun Wink
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
lol i didn't know you could spin in the air while rolling as a rock.
Boulder Bowl: Rock and Rollodillo (1:15.03)

Rollodillo can be completely prevented from rolling. This saves about 10 seconds.

Rightside Down: The Great Crate Incinerator (0:57.18)

I didn't spend much time with this one. The order in which I destroy the crates might not be optimal, but it's a 3 second improvement over the old run on the KB.

THIS RUN CONTAINS SECRET WORLDS
That run of Boulder Bowl was beastly good. I had no clue about that shortcut to the spheroid planet with a purple crystal on it!
Speedrunner and highscore player
OMG, great Rollodillo fight =O
Btw, there is yet one speedtrick, you don't need break that purple crystal, you can just rock jump to upper planet Wink Otherwise very cool run.

nemi: 2011-12-06 06:07:49 pm
I'm aware of that shortcut, but for some reason I can rarely get the necessary height out of the rock mushroom jump. Maybe someone better than me with the rock mushroom can give it a try? Wink

I'll probably return to these IL runs later, since I've been focusing on practicing a 71-star run lately.

Single-segment 71-Star run (w/ Banktoad)

3:18:33
(1 death @ Galaxy Generator--costs about 48 seconds)

I don't know if this is good enough for submission, but I think it's good as a practice run. World 4 is particularly messy, and of course there is the 1 death at Bowser's Galaxy Generator, but the rest of the run is pretty smooth. Feedback would be appreciated.

Below is my route. Probably the most questionable part is Beat Block, Starshine Beach, and Gravity Gauntlet's Comet Stars. The fastest alternative Stars I can think of are Lava Lair and Supermassive's Comet Stars and Boo Moon's first Star. I've timed almost everything I can think of that is required to get the late-game Comet Stars (including extra map traversal and Comet appearance notifications), and I think this route is 10 to 20 seconds faster than the alternative. The difference is small, but I thought this route might at least be more entertaining to watch...

Wow, 3:18?  That's an incredible time!

IMO, 1 death is not bad at all for a run of this length.  At least, that's the lowest death count I got for Galaxy 1 61-star, which is a shorter run.  I'll watch the run once it's all uploaded, though from the times you've posted, it already sounds like this run is pretty darn good.

For the record, I checked Nicovideo again and here are the fastest 71-star runs I found.  They use real time (file select -> final "You got a Grand Star! message") instead of checking the letter at the end for the time; not sure how much of a discrepancy that creates:
3:23:09 by ねぐろ (neguro)
3:27:50 by 紺空 (konkuu)

Edit:

Watched World 1.  Looking extremely solid so far, with nearly all of the fastest strategies as far as I know (save for relatively minor things, like not taking the most direct line for the first shortcut in Yoshi Star 1; though that berry boost was a really clever consistency trick), and several neat tricks I'd never seen before.  Amazingly few mistakes.

I'm not the most knowledgable person for SMG2, but one thing in Rightside Down: can you jump forwards right after tossing a fireball (like, right after you spin to toss the fireball) as Fire Mario?  I was able to do that in SMG1, and it saved a bit of time sometimes.  For example, see 1:43 and 1:58 in my 61-star segment 12.

Darn. I've watched your SMG1 run, but I never noticed the Fire Flower trick. Sad Thanks for pointing it out.

The time from file select to touching the final Grand Star is about 3:12:11. I'm not sure when the Message Board time begins and ends, but it does include the end credits.

Edit: Late update, but this doesn't seem to work in SMG2. In Galaxy 1, Mario/Luigi's momentum is "stored" while throwing a fireball, so you can long-jump or jump forward out of a fireball. No such luck in Galaxy 2.
Now a hit show on the CW
I'm incredibly impressed by the run so far. I wouldn't dare attempt some of those infinite flutters in a SS run, let alone the Flip-Swap strat. Can't wait to see the rest of this!
General Kong - Bullets and Bananas
I've been able to watch all the parts so far and I just wanted to say that the run looks really good.  Looking forward to the rest.
Ok, all parts are up. Thanks for the feedback so far.

I think I'll keep trying until I get a deathless run (or, at least, a run with a less costly death).
It might take a while though... XD
trepidation
Wow, I think that might have been the most epic choke I've ever seen in speedrunning. You were almost there!

I just got done watching the whole thing start to finish. I thought it was outstanding. The amount of memorization and skill demonstrated is inspiring. I don't think any verifiers would have a problem accepting this run, but it seems you have higher aspirations anyway.

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been attempting SSs?
F*ckin' sanity effects...
It's really awesome that you're trying again.  It IS a bit hard to swallow, that death, but man, after 3+ hours...I'm sure if you get sick of running it, this one would definitely be accepted.  Good luck!
