Just looked over the topic and I was surprised to see nobody had mentioned the only trick that I used in my my playthrough.

It's possible that I missed it, but if not, I think it's pretty useful, I call it Cloud Long Jumping.

Basically whenever you have the cloud powerup, spin to create a cloud and long jump at the same time.  If you do it right, Mario/Luigi gets a much higher and longer jump than an ordinary one.

I haven't managed to get 3 CLJs out of a single powerup without touching the ground, I've had to do one, make a second cloud to land on, and a third cloud for a second CLJ.

This ought to help in some of the cloud levels and it makes Bowser Jr. 3 a joke.  One CLJ from the outside will almost always land you on his machine.

Wow, that is incredibly useful. You can't do three without touching the ground, since you have to have a solid floor to long jump off of. However, this means some of the shortcuts that used two or three clouds can be done with one CLJ and then have two clouds to do whatever with.

You can also do a cloud backflip (or normal jump, or turnaround jump) which will be slightly higher than a normal version, the good thing about this is that you can chain them together if you get the timing right, you need to backflip, create a cloud, immediatly press z to cancel the spin animation, then do a backflip straight after and repeat. If you pull it off you can get very high though it is really tricky to nail the timing down.

The only place ive found a use for it is on the 2D area of cloudy court galaxy, where you can save time in by going above the area you are supposed to walljump up (using CLJ aswell) and the final area going up to the star.

Would the bank toad be allowed in a fullgame run?  The starbit amount in the bank is shared between all the files so you could easily do fast hungry luma stars but I have a feeling this wont be allowed.

Also, does anyone know how comets work yet?  I'm ding a for fun test run and have gotten 6 comet medals (yoshi star, hightail falls, cloudy court, haunty halls, rolling masterpiece and supermassive) but only 2 have appeared (yoshi star and cloudy court).

BTW, not sure if its known or not but gobblegut's red things can be destroyed while in the air, but its hard because its hard to tell if you're close enough or if its low enough.

I have recently found an absolute perfect route for a 70 star run, perfecting which comet medals to get. Saying that it is perfect is an over-statement, because it is only perfect in my opinion, and probably not someone else's.

Prankster Comet's appear for me in this route after I finish both stars in Tall Trunk Galaxy and Cloudy Court Galaxy (4 stars) in World 3, adding up to a total 26 stars when they start appearing for me. I know that you have to complete 1 galaxy completely (omit hidden stars/hungry luma galaxies) for them to appear. World 1 is the easiest to do so.

In my run I probably get more comet medals then needed, but I'm pretty sure you have to get the comet medal in order for the prankster comet to appear in that galaxy. (For example, if you don't get the comet medal in Flip-Swap Galaxy, the prankster comet will not appear there.)

Should I post my full route of my 70 stars? It is a pretty long list, but I think it would be helpful. Some other people could edit it to make it faster. I personally will probably always use this list because I'm good at all of the missions on the route.

I have already tested out each and every mission, when the prankster comets appear, and when to do them. It is a very helpful guide.
I say post it, sounds like you've got a pretty good start there so the more people who can look at it and potentially find improvements the better.

NOTES -  (Comet Medal) Means that you get the comet medal in that mission, if you didn't already know. Also, if the mission just says "Prankster comet" That means that you do the prankster comet mission. For example, prankster comet for Boulder Bowl Galaxy would be the Rolling Crab Romp. Also, some of the prankster comets appear that I do not do.

If you do not have enough starbits for a hungry luma, you can go back and do it another time. In this run you need to feed the first 3 luma's, which is not that hard. (2,200 Star Bits)

Sorry I don't know exactly when the Lava Lair Prankster comet appears, it appears before/after you do Bowser Jr's Boom Bunker for sure though, so no problem

Many comet medals may and probably not needed. I got them for the sake of knowing for sure that I will get the prankster comets in the places that I wanted.

I know, there are a couple of long missions in this route that can replaced with shorter ones. I managed to not do any of Slipsand Galaxy, Shiverburn Galaxy, or Boo Moon Galaxy, though. This is just a safety precaution, because many of the short ones (Like ShiverBurn Chimp Ice Challenge) I die in and/or can not complete.

Almost all of the Prankster Comets appear in World 3 and 4. My Strategy was to do the stars of World 3, go back and do the prankster comets/hungry Luma Galaxies/Chimp Challenges that appeared, then do the stars of World 4, go back and do the prankster comets that appeared, do the stars in world 5, and do the 2 bowser/bowser Jr. prankster comets, Beat Block Galaxy, and the Fluzzard Race, which leaves you with 63 stars, with 7 left to get in world 6.

You guys have my permission to change this in any way that you like. This is the route I will use to try to get under 4 hours, if at all possible.

EDIT #1 - I have changed the route so that I replaced both Boulder Bowl Galaxy missions with First Honeybloom Mission and Shiverburn Monkey Challenge. I also have replaced the long Cosmic Cove Galaxy mission with  Flipsville's New Digs. I have also took out when the prankster comets appear, because I changed the route. I know that they are guaranteed to appear sometime in the run 100%.

EDIT #2 - I changed Puzzle Plank Galaxies Prankster comet to Boo Moon Galaxy's Hidden star. It is 1 and a half minutes faster, approximately. (1:30 < 3:00)

What someone needs to do is try your route (or a similar route), only picking up the Comet Coins on levels that they intend to do the Comet stars on, and see if that's a sufficient enough amount to trigger all of them.

A small speed trick for Bowser Jr.'s Boomsday Machine:

I was going to do a full level run, as I also have a faster boss strategy to show off, but my camera battery died before I could get a decent run recorded. I may do some more attempts tomorrow if I feel up to it (really not crazy about this level).

A few suggestions for the route

-You don't do flipsville 2nd star which is pretty short, I can easily get 1:35-1:40
-You do exploring the cosmic cavern which is a very long star because of all the slow swimming.  I'm pretty sure its well over 3:00
-I suggest skipping boulder bowl.  Its a pretty long star (the record on the star times page is 2:25, include that you cant skip cutscenes (which btw do count against your time if you can't skip them) and the cutscene afterwards showing the rock mushroom in the room on spaceship mario.  Honeybloom 1st star could be substituted for this since its a bit faster (I get around 2:25) and imo easier.  You should add in the chimps skating challenge on shiverburn in place of the comet (I don't find it very hard, and I think it would still be faster even if you failed once).
-Puzzle Plank secret is also pretty long but I'm not sure what could be substituted for it....maybe prince pikante in shiverburn?

I'll look at it more later.  For the most part it looks like a good route.

You're right. Originally, I was wall kick/spin jumping all the way to the top of the "room" the star was in (which can definitely only be reached by Luigi) and dropping in from above until I realized that it would be easier (and faster) to just long jump towards the camera like I did in the video. Didn't bother trying the first jump with Mario, but you're right, it's definitely possible.

EDIT: Aaaand it turns out that Mario can even reach the top of that room, with a triple jump. I should really test these things before making sweeping judgments Tongue

I can't do this any faster, although there should be a way to backflip off Yoshi straight to the boss cutscene. I never get enough height after fluttering.

Hey I'm not sure if these couple of tricks I found out have been posted already but I thought I'd share them with you guys.

The first one is what I like to call "Button Boosting" where basically you ground-pound a button like in the video below, and wait for it to pop up again, and at the right time, jump, backflip, or whatever to get a large boost to propel you upwards quite high. I haven't found any uses for it but maybe it could come in handy later.

Second is probably useless but could be pretty fancy if pulled off right, just watch the video below to see my idea.

Edit: I will have another trick posted a little later today, I forgot to upload it.
O_o
Button Boosting is pretty nice, but I wouldn't really call the concept new. In Super Mario Galaxy 2 your jumps are given a substantial boost when you're elevating. I believe the faster you're going up, the more jump you will get. It works when you summon a cloud and you jump, and even off a thwomp.

00:57.01 - Search for the Toad Brigade Captain (Fluffy Bluff Galaxy)

Looks nice, LDA.

Continuing with Fluffy Bluff, here's Every Planet Has Its Price in 0:38.13:

I'm guessing the ILs with hungry Lumas in them will be done with them already paid for, since after you complete the star once they are permanent in Launch Star form.

makes sense. i'm sure no one wants to play through again each time they want to try to beat the time.
