If you hold down the left and right button Mario/Luigi will run backwards in P speed. It is alot faster to swim using this bug. He will run in the water too ;D.
I always thought glitches that required opening up your controller with a screwdriver were disallowed, but there's nothing mentioned in the rules about it. Of course, there's nothing mentioned in the rules about not overclocking your NES or something to go faster, but that's obviously not to be allowed.
On just the NES alone (back in the day, 10-15 years ago), I used to play through all levels in one sitting night after night in high school. I think I could easily beat the game in 3-4 hours. That's not rushing though. Every hammer brother, and almost all coin ships as well.
I doubt I could do it now. I haven't seriously played Super Mario 3 in years.
At the moment i am running this game, but not 100% Im doing a no flute run. Im pretty good at the game and in most levels i have a good strategy to go as fast as i can. One problem is those strategys arent 100% ''Death-proof'' Its going to be crazy hard to get trough the game without dying, while going speedy. Expect this run to be finished in a couple of weeks.
I don't plan on attempting a single segment run through the whole game, but about a year ago I did individual level runs for a lot of the levels, so you might want to compare your times to mine as you're practicing for your run. I got my times playing the Japanese version of the game on Famtasia. I save stated before I started each level so I could quickly retry over and over, but no save states were used during the levels. I got all the times by starting the level with little Mario unless otherwise specified by an S for Super Mario or an F for Fire Mario. I abbreviated fortress as f, castle as c, desert as d, pyramid as p, tower as t, and hand-stage as h.
I have think about doing this run myself but had figured out that i don´t like the last world and some other stage. I hate when the camera goes slow and you can´t run trough the stage fast. Some weeks ago I try to beat that WR on twingalaxies but it´s difficult to beat the game without dying. Annyway I almoust reach the 1:40 "clear time" i think (20 deads or something) .
I don´t think I´m going for this run... It´s pretty hard to do a good looking run in mario 3, like Baum´s Mario world run...
But good lut for the guy who want it. It´s gonna be nice
Your right Frezy, the scrolling levels are a pain, cause they really take the pace out of the game. i just skip three of them using clouds (3-6, 5-9 & 7-4) but still, the ending levels and world 8 are boring as hell.
I don't think there's much point to a mario 3 run where you dont use flutes but you also dont beat every level. If you're going to not use flutes, you should get 100%!
Just completed a practise No Flute run, ending up with a dissapointing time of 1:21:25. Ive been playing this game for the last 2 weeks, literally every spot of free time i have, but sometimes i make mistakes that are just SO stupid. And sometimes i just press jump 0.0000001 second too early/Late. etc. etc. Its hard baby, but im not going to give up! Im gonna do another run tonight and hope its better. My targeted time is -1:10.
That would be great to see! I am playing it very oft and allways trying to do it as fast as possible. But I'm using the "backside-running" trick all the time ;D, it is funnier that way!
