No deaths, 8 of the 20 levels were played perfectly. There were still plenty of silly mistakes. The bosses in 4-3 and 5-3 took way too long, for instance.
Possibly I will be getting a Power Pak in the next month, so I can practice stuff more thoroughly.
Hypothetical is around 21:03, but seems unlikely in the extreme. That 5-2 is looking more and more like a bad joke to me...there's no way I could pull that off (maybe after power pak)
Nice little improvement. You still seem to be having a problem in 4-3. I recommend using the strat I use until you think the 2-3 seconds lost is important.
I think I figured out what my problem is in that room (aside from not enough warmup)...I throw the last block too late. Might start using the 1-2 hard strat.
It's more the damage you take that is worrying with your strategy. It's hard to recover from a mistake when you have several little fire dudes randomly jumping at you in the process. I say go for the fastest 1-2. Even if you fail, you can still make the egg cycle that is barely slower than using Luigi.
I can predict when the mini fryguys will jump, if they fall and land in the same place every time. The problem is that my strat allowed some variance in where they land, but if I get hit by the boss *before* dropping the 3rd block, then it's much more consistent.
Nice, look forward to watching it. Btw I finally got an easycap, so I can do better streams and more accurate timings of any%. Hopefully I can get that 8:26 soon.
3-3 and 5-3 are pretty much the only levels with which I have consistent trouble now. Mouser's position is always a bit different, and Clawgrip is fairly random. I found a strat that saves 2 seconds in 5-3, but it's risky because you're small throughout most of the level.
I'm looking forward to bringing the warpless time way down soon.
Memorizing a general method for positioning bombs for Mouser is the best you can do for 3-3. You don't really need to memorize each pattern. I did fairly well against him after grinding him for a while when first learning. You should probably do some savestate practice so you can get different patterns. Clawglip can be random but I'm usually able to kill him with the first two rocks he throws, which is only twice as long as a 1 rock kill (6 seconds x 2). If you're out of practice there, it's easy to lose a chunk of time. Same goes for the 5-2 Birdo and Fryguy. I'd like to see that 5-3 strat. I hope it doesn't involve running through the bombs at the start.
Totally awesome to see someone put my (very) old run out of its misery. A couple questions (they might be a tad ignorant as I've been out of the SMB2 loop for many years):
In 1-2 wouldn't it be faster to use Toad and do the subspace turnip glitch instead of lugging the key all the way to Birdo?
How did you keep running (i.e. holding "B") when doing the super jump while holding the mushroom block thing at 4:56 (end of 2-2)? I thought if you held B it would make you throw the block when you jumped. Or maybe I'm not remembering correctly.
In the digging levels, how come you didn't do the "land on a shyguy and not have to dig the following row" trick? I thought that was possible to do on a console.
Why Luigi on 5-2? Is it just for easier vine jumps?
Oh wow, hi tmont...thank you for watching my run and chiming in.
1. I use the turnip strat in the any%, but initially decided to leave it out of warpless because there are so many opportunities to lose time elsewhere. I don't do that anymore though. 2. If you're close to a wall and facing it, the block has nowhere to go, so the game doesn't allow you to drop it. 3. I still need to research this, lol 4. Toad is much harder on console...I think it's the d-pad or something.
I sorta consider jeffsledge's SNES time of 22:26 to be the current record (since NES/SNES are pretty equivalent length wise), but hopefully I can improve my time soon.
I was surprised you don't go for the row skipping in the sand areas. I found it pretty easy to do when I was learning NES version. I was going to add it to the 6-1 route but found what I already did to be much more consistent. You should at least try it in 2-2 and 2-3.
By the way, I got a new pb of 1.8 seconds earlier today. The run was over 30 seconds ahead of my 22:29 after 5-2 but I accidentally picked Mario for 5-3 then died half way through. I still managed to be 18 seconds ahead but died to the bird door before Wart. I haven't gotten anywhere close to that good of a world 2 and 3 time since, so I should probably start practicing a lot more if I intend to at least match it.
