Just for everyone's info: my timing of a mario 2 run will start at the character selection for 1-1. That's because you're controlling which character you will soon be playing as, so it counts as "character control".

Also, there's a mario 2 run done in mario all-stars currently among the mass of tapes needing capture. I will have an all stars page that tracks runs of the games there separately from the NES versions since there are physics changes.

do these times come from when you select the player or when you can control the player?
1-1 59 seconds, from when i pick my character.

i do not want to reveal my character

If you're not using Toad, then you're not choosing the correct character.  I timed from the yellow-ish screen that tells you which level you're on.  It sounds like we have about the same time.  My timing is not completely accurate, so we're probably pretty close.

If you want to know the fastest characters for each leve, watch the tool-assisted movie.  Obviously, those times are not really possible for a human to achieve, but you can't get a faster time using a different character than what they're using (as far as I know).

Update!

I got my Mario Bros. 2 run online. But it was captured by a friend of mine who has some problems with his card, so the video has some skips, flashes, is kind of blurry, and for some reason it skips the character selection screen before 1-3. Because of these reasons I'm not going to try to get it on SDA or sdkess's site until I can capture it myself at hopefully better quality. Anyone who wants to watch it though can get it here -

What was the time for that run?  Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter now since I'll find out soon when I'm done downloading and watching it, but I just wish people would always say what the time is in the post.

Edit: Never mind, I just noticed you were talking about an old run and not one you just did.  Were you talking about the 11:03 run?

Edit 2: Nice run.  I don't know if you know this already, but you don't need to do a power jump from an enemy in 1-1 to reach the upper level, just jump off of the thing just after the POW block.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Yes this video is what I called my 11:03 run. However I didn't know SDA would start timing right at the character selection, so it really comes to about 11:06 I think.

No I didn't know about the other route in 1-1. That sounds like it would save a few more seconds but I'm too lazy to go back and redo it.

In fact, in a few levels your Luigi favor might actually be good.
For instance less hindrance from the conveyor belts in 7-2.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
i just got 11minutes and 13-14 seconds from when you hit start, i died once and i know i can improve by like 30 seconds, i cant recall how to do level 6-2 like i used to but it will come to me eventually i think, or i will just figure it out again. that death wasted like 15 seconds or so, so i know i can definatley get under 11 minutes, i think my best btime was a 10:34 that i got about a year ago.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
i just got 10minutes and 49seconds. it might be 10minutes 48 seconds by SDAs timing but i am not sure. i can imrpove by 10 or more seconds but i might not try to improve unless someone can beat that time.

my times
1-1- 59 seconds-1:00
1-2- 1:41
1-3- 2:06-2:07
4-1- 2:56
4-2- 3:42
6-1- 4:50
6-2- 5:43-5:44
6-3- 6:56-6:57
7-1- 8:08
7-2- 10:48-10:49!

I finally recorded a run of this.  The final time was 10:56, give or take a second or two.  That's about the best I can get.  So if no one ever stipulates that they're actually going to send in a video in the next couple weeks, I'll send in mine.  I just want to see something.

Here are my times, if anyone cares:

All times taken are the moment I finished the level and could no longer control my character (e.g. entering hawkmouth).  I used Toad for every level except 4-2, where I used Princess.

1-1 1:03
1-2 1:47
1-3 2:13

4-1 3:03
4-2 3:52

6-1 5:01
6-2 6:02
6-3 7:13

7-1 8:37
7-2 10:56 (got to Wart at 9:55)

I probably lost about 2 seconds due to idiocy on 6-2, about 3-4 seconds due to Birdo shooting 3 damn fireballs in a row on 6-3, and falling off a ladder like a parapalegic on 7-1.  However, I saved all that time and more on 7-2, where I actually executed the vine-jump on the second try, and had a perfect Wart battle.

andrewg: I'm curious as to when you started your timer.  I'm almost positive my route on 1-1 cannot be improved, and yet you beat me by 3 seconds.  I started the timer as soon as I pressed start at the title screen, which takes you to the character select screen, which is where I believe Radix stated that the timing started from.
I think andrewg is timing from when you first appear, so that would mean you're tied for 1-1.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
actually that is not true, i started timing when i pressed start at the beginning of the game. many people do not know how to do the level that fast, i think it is the fastest way to do it. i screwed up a bit though.

i got to wart i think with about a time of 9:45, i did not do that well fighting him, i did decent though.

i think by SDA timing it would be 10:48

i really would not like to tell anyone how i got that fast on 1-1, if i send it in, you will see how i have exucuted it perfectly.

on the last level, i probably made 15-25 seconds of error, i missed doing the vine jump and accidentlally climbed up the latter into the next area, i had to go back down and try to do it again, whihc took me like 3 more seconds. i probably wasted 10-15 seconds there. the other part i lost time was at wart, i think i missed him once and i could have probably gotten the vegetables two times when wart shot his bubbles to make them dissappear.

i would like to reduce my time to about a 10:20 but i might not try that until someone can beat my record now.

i used luigi and toad for the whole run.

i might send it to SDA i might send it to vortiginous.com though... maybe to both if i can.

Seriously, every trick you're doing in your speedrun really is (most likely) common knowledge.  You gain nothing by trying to keep secrets, it just makes people lose respect for you.  Just watch an old TAS from before the warp glitch was discovered and you'll see a 1-1 completion as fast as yours (actually slightly faster due to greater accuracy for the last egg).  If anyone's wondering how you're a few seconds faster instead of just slightly, as Sleepz explained awhile ago on the nesvideos forum, there's a set time when each egg comes, and if you get there slightly earlier, you'll just have to wait longer for the egg, but you got there just fast enough for the previous egg.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
yes you are right about how i have gotten 1-1 that fast. i think i will try to send my video to vortiginous.com with my smb1 record of 5:09. obviously, my video can be improved, so i am hoping i can get it down to 10minutes and 20 seconds.

Interesting discussion in the LoZ thread about secrecy.  I don't want to drag that over here, but the whole point of a forum is to share information.  I'd rather not hear your times unless you can follow up your claims with something substantial, like mentioning your character, or something.  Everyone else in this thread has been pretty cool about disclosing information about the game, so I think it would be nice if you could indulge us by sharing some of your tricks.

But anyway, I am aware that Birdo's eggs are spit based on the internal game clock (about every 3-4 seconds, I think); I just didn't think it was possible to get to Birdo three seconds faster than what I was already doing.  Maybe I'll have to investigate that...

And if you get below 10:30, I'm going to have to ask you to send that in.  That time would be much too sexy to not share with everyone.  I'm not looking for prestige by doing this run, I just want to see someone (probably not me) blaze through this game like it's been done in SMB and SMB3.  I think it's a shameless tragedy that nobody has done a run for this game yet (until now, I mean).

I don't believe there wasn't a single comment on the all--stars mario 2 run...

I'd love to see any sub-11 time to be honest. I do have an 11:15 on tape, but I'm not going to bother capturing it since others have better times. It was fairly sloppy since I only put about an hour into it, but at least it had no deaths. Smiley
Whatever happened with this?

I was really looking forward to the run.

Have patience, it's coming.  I sent the tape in last week.  Hopefully I'll not disappoint. Smiley

Hi! I'm andrewg!
ok, i will tell you all that i use luigi the first level, once i get out of the entrance to the cave, where you have to run across the ceiling in 1-1, i move up very quickly to the top with luigi. then about half way across the ceiling part i jump and land right on an egg when birdo shoots right as i enter the screen which makes it 3 seconds faster. i know i definately can get below 10:30, i screwed up a lot on the last level and also on a couple of world 6 levels. i am not sure if i am going to send it in to SDA but i might. i should get it online sometime, as well as my 5:09 in smb1.

since i have some more room on this tape, and i have nothing to do right now, i will see how fast i can beat the game right now. i will post again if i get a better time probably in a few minutes.

EDIT: i am having a really hard time with the last level! once i can beat that in like 2 minutes then i can get somewhere around 10minutes.

AHHHHHHHH!!!! i almost got 10:10!!!!!! i died after i hit wart 5 times, so i ended with a ti me of like 11 minutes again. i think eventually i should be able to beat it under 10minutes, if i get lucky enough.

i think i am going to try to get under 10minutes again, in a week or two i might try that, since i'm working on other mario stuff right now.

Nice! I'm eager to see it. I've always liked this game, and I was actually planning a 10:30-ish run over a year ago, but I lost my motivation when people starting TAS'ing it. I'm not making any promises, but seeing other people get good times legitimately is renewing my interest in the game.

EDIT: I watched it. Very nice run tmont! This is a tough game to speed run without mistakes for many reasons, and I was more than impressed with your execution. I haven't done a detailed comparison with my own Luigi run yet, but it's clear that Toad saves a ton of time in certain levels. I've always hated Toad so I procrastinated on learning to do levels fast with him. I'm a Luigi fan. Grin

Great work!

Ok watched it too now.

You sure know your double jump man. I'd never have thought that such a thing would be possible in a real-time run.

How much difference do you estimate taking Luigi in 7-1? The jump over that pillar in the 2nd area seems to save at least 10 seconds... (no offence meant, I'm just curious what possible improvements remain)
Yes, very good run. Nice work on 6-2. I couldn’t imagine seeing that level without Luigi. I also see that the 7-2 shortcut is a piece of cake for you now, that’s a major time saver right there. With your run being up on the site, it must mean double jump is officially accepted.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
just not i beat the game as fast as i could, i dont know my time, i think it might beat my record currently, but i am not sure. i messed up a bit on wart, and i also messed up by like 5 seconds on level 4-1. i also had a few other mistakes probably adding up to 10+seconds.

it was only 1 second faster than my record, a 10:48. i screwed up on wart so bad.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Very good run. I personally think Luigi would be alot faster in 7-1 though. You got very lucky getting the 'early' vegetable during Wart..I barely ever get that and it saves a good 5-6 seconds. You also got lucky that he didn't pop any vegetables.. I wasn't fortunate enough to have that happen in my run.  Sad Maybe I'll try to beat this time someday but not soon. Awesome job!
