Hi! I'm andrewg!
Video is up again. It may be legitimate?

My opinion: I don't trust it. The Twitch account had only 8 channel views and 0 followers when I looked at it a while ago, so he must have gotten this run on his very first stream (assuming he ever did)
usedpizza pointed out originally before the video went private (TWICE) he wrote in the description that it was a twitch to youtube export (it's not there anymore), but there's clearly text edited in at the end of the video.
The description says he beat the emulator run by 7 frames, but that's assuming his recording is EXACTLY at the same framerate of the NES, which I don't believe, since most things are recorded at 59.94, not ~60.1, and if it were recorded at 59.94 then he would not have gotten that frame count, but that's all assuming this run was on console because it looks like it was done on console, but it could have been done on emulator, I don't know. also, 4:57.58 is not a multiple of the framerate of the NES, so how did he get that time? that could have just been a simple mathematical error though

The behavior of the guy (making the video private as if he had something to hide) makes it suspicious, but I'm not sure if what I said above is really enough information to disprove it or not. Either way, it's too questionable to tell if it's real or not

Hi! I'm andrewg!
its emulated im fairly sure looking at the screen boarder and video quality...not 100% sure, but sure enough. and im thinkinh it is not legit now for several reasons mentioned. I feel like its just a TAS with splits, and thats all.

The fact that it was hidden and then unhidden multiple times, and that the video description has been changed after certain aspects of the original description were questioned, is just one of the many things that make it extremely questionable.
the dude used going to a haunted house as an excuse
No no, see, that was his friend.
B+Left, Left, Up+B, ★
Haunted House must've gotten him again since he's switched back to private. If anyone needs to watch the video since the dude (or his "friend") keeps making it private, I dl'd it & reuploaded it.

HELLO!
Faking it as a twitch export? And caught? No reason at all to believe it.

He didn't directly say it was a Twitch export. It was something like "Uploading to Youtube before Twitch deletes the VoD". However the Twitch channel had 0 followers and 8 views and no saved videos, when I looked at it. You get more views by pure chance, if you stream for some time and why would you not make a highlight and wait with going to the public until the VoD gets deleted?

EDIT: On an unrelated one:
I copied all runs from the Wikia Leaderboard to speedrun.com:
http://www.speedrun.com/smb1
http://www.speedrun.com/smbtll
http://www.speedrun.com/smas
The only advantage the wiki still has is the World Record progression and that it's all in one place, but with speedrun.com becoming more popular I think it's best to just abandon the wiki and use speedrun.com instead from now on.
HELLO!
True, but if he streamed it, it would still be on twitch, since they take 24 hours even to notify you you're ready for a highlight.

This strikes me as a fraud by somebody who's never streamed and doesn't really know how it works.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
Long story short: I found a link that probably proves that this kid did some other scams in the past, and so the record should not be trusted. The end.
Talk to the Hand
Good job, Andrew. Thanks for confirming what everyone was pretty sure of.

You got a future in sleuthin', kid!

He's improving at a very fast pace, I wouldn't be surprised if he got 4:57 or even WR soon.
EDIT: With the Bowser RNG duplication method I get 4:58.37 as his time, which means it'd have beaten my run by a frame with the bullet bill glitch and that he missed Kosmic's time of 4:58.35 by a frame.

Is it possible to use Bowser RNG duplication for any run? I'm curious what the exact time for my 5:03.X run is. (It's on the leaderboards, as you already know. Tongue )

Also, would you be able to teach me how such timing is done? I do have a little experience with TASing via FCEUX. (I made a "human" Any% TAS about 10 months ago, but I only managed 4:58.30... Or is it 4:57.80? Well, 17,898 Frames anyway. That was before the BB Glitch, of course.)

Btw, I noticed that none of the times on the leaderboards seem to match up with an exact number of frames using any frame rate I know of (60, ~60.099, 59.94, etc). However, your time of 4:57.693 seems to correspond to 17,861.5 frames if 60 FPS is used (and several other times on the leaderboard seem to involve a half frame as well). Is there a reason for the half frame? Tongue

No, it's only possible, if on the last screen you hold right and B all the time, you know how many framerules passed since reset and exactly how many lag frames occured. An optimized Any% run has no lag except for rare cases of the bullet bill glitch, but warpless runs almost always do.

You just play through the game with savestates at the same rate as the run you are timing, get the same number of framerules, go down the same number of pipes etc. (or let a TAS do it for you and end movie playback early) until the end of the water section of 8-4 and make a savestate there and try leaving the room on different frames to see what their corresponding RNG pattern and final time is.

The framerate is 39375000/655171 ~= 60.09881387708959.

Thanks! Btw, I updated my times on the Leaderboard. They're the same videos, I just changed the milliseconds so they at least correspond to possible times (though I could be off by a few frames anyway).

Also, I think I've discovered how to have the TAS Editor record my runs, so I should automatically know the exact number of frames in the future. Smiley

3rd best time Smiley

This is the romhack of the famous "Super Mario Bros. Frustration" video. The hack's real name is actually "Super Mario Forever". I don't think it's a very well-made hack, but I wanted to get a deathless run of it.
The pipe at the end of 1-2 is weird. It seems to be completely random, if it takes you to the flagpole or a bonus room. Sadly it was the bonus room in this run, which cost me a lot of time, but I'm content with it either way.

I'm not sure, if it's the record. There is a vast amount of unmarked TASes of this game on youtube:

video edited, look at 1:30

dodges fireballs he could not know were coming, look at 3:30, also worst video quality of all time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1Hi04fviTc
uses some cheat to jump multiple times
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxewGjBUy4E
obviously cheated

this one is the only non-trivial case I found:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86F1_OQfMJ4 (time about ~3:22)
makes a backwards jump on the first block for no reason
the way he hit the coin block after the 2nd piranha plant looks very dodgy
1:23 looks dodgy too, unnecessary risk
start and end of 1-4 look dodgy too, but could just be lucky
overall there are many risky movements and great luck and some sloppiness that doesn't really look like an experienced player, but I see no 100% proof that it's fake
EDIT: on second thought the start of 1-4 really looks VERY weird

hey y'all brand new to speed running this game and im no pro by any standard especially after seeing what can be done with this game.  Because im new i dont expect to make people go woah right out the gate but as time progresses i keep improving my time from minutes to seconds.  my first actual timed run was like 7 minutes and currently improved to a 5:20.  i play on an emulator but in no way shape or form use any computer witchcraft like save state abuse or slowing the game down and playing frame by frame, if i did im pretty sure my times would be on par with current world records as i could clean up major mistakes in the run itself.  with that being said i still go after the harder tricks in the game except 1 and that is in 4-2, how the heck do you pop the beanstalk and use the pipe to wrong warp? ive played that level specifically for days and am not able to get it to work.

please be gentle lol im working on speeding up certain levels and currently working on 1-2 this week in order to get the quick jumps and jumping the pipes instead of waiting like a dolt.  like i said 4-2 can be improved like crazy if i can get the wrong warp. 8-1 i use granny strats at the end to make sure the piranha plant in the second pipe is either despawned or going back into the pipe at the right time so i can use it to jump up the stairs, i need to figure out a new way up the stairs.  8-2 my most favoritest level ever this was my most horrible level until i played it for 2 weeks straight finding safe ways to traverse the two really tricky spots and you will see that i was being quite cautious when it comes to flying turtles.  i also hit the lower end of the flagpole on 8-2 because of the set up i use, if im lucky i can get a bullet bill to spawn on the ground and use that to skip the flagpole but in this run it didnt happen.  8-3 i hate, so much, it just ruins runs for me so i take the leap of faith everytime just to get through it.  i tried slowing down but i was too jacked on the decent run i jumped into the flag early lol.  8-4 this is probably my best 8-4 ever, it can be improved greatly im sure but for me i needed a cigarette after that

my apologies if this is in the wrong forum, post, what not im still wet behind the ears on all of this

You have to bump into the wall with backwards jumps, it will not work otherwise. With each such jump Mario gets farther to the right side of the screen. When you stand on the pipe to go down, there should be at most 1 full block of the ground next to the pipe at the right side of the screen.
thank you for the fast response, im going to try that right now
blubbler youre the man, 3 tries and i got it.  now im mad i didnt come here before i practiced that stupid stage.  thank you for the tip its greatly appreciated
