This will clear some of it up. The frames I'm counting are 30 FPS (just now realized that). If the NES runs at 60 FPS, then double my counts and it should be off by only 1 if at all.

How do you load mp4 in Virtualdub? I use Avidemux to count frames of mp4 videos and it always seemed accurate.

The frames I used in the calculation of the time are based directly from the dvd itself. When encoding it, I used "trim content" virtualdub window to count the frames. I think this is accurate?

I can't get mp4 to work for virtualdub. I'm not sure how ZX497 compared the videos, but he got the same results I did for the calculation, so I'd be curious as to how he got his calculation/loaded mp4s in virtualdub.

We need to open both runs in virtualdub and compare, because if it's not identical at the start of 8-3, I'd be curious as to why.

Can you compare the two runs at the start of say 8-1 or the start of 4-2? They should be identical there as well.

I'm confused. It COULD be some sort of differences between anri? Though, I figure virtualdub wouldn't change.

I figured out how to slow the video down. with a bit more time I can section it off, so if you want a section slower, let me know, but here's the WHOLE thing (PiP version) at 50% speed.

also, 8-1 and 4-2 I'm getting both videos at the same frame, so it looks like it's identical at those points.

i dont know either. I'll save the file so I can edit the speeds more if need be. the frame rate is a little messed up on my end though (locked at 30 FPS). I'll look into fixing that. but I hope the slowed down version helps.

I converted the file to .avi before loading it up. It still gave me an error, so I also had to download FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder to load it up properly.

And yeah, I made sure I kept the original frame rate when converting it, so it wouldn't mess with the results.

Apparently there's a better way to do this too, which requires absolutely no converting.

So i guess i will tryvto compare these. Now, they should line up correctly, if they dont i will be confused. I will give the raw files to someone to encode again if there was some issue.

Well, they do not line up correctly, that much I know. I'm looking at the exact frame count right now.

8-1 (+2):
-old, 7820
-new, 7822

8-2 (-21):
-old, 10900
-new, 10879

8-3 (+2):
-old, 13100
-new, 13102

8-4 (+2):
-old, 15216
-new, 15218

So, yeah. I don't know anything about SMB1 frame count rules or such, but if you guys think there's an issue, maybe you should try reconverting the files? It might also be possible that your recording software got a slight hiccup here or there, and dropped a frame or two? Or something?

Also, for comparison, at the start of 4-2 the two runs do indeed line up perfectly, frame by frame, at 6433. So, it's definitely not an issue with my timing or anything.

I may have used an old version of anrichan for encoding. I'm downloading the newest one to make sure it's encoded properly. I will post the new encode here when finished.

I wonder if there's a chance that the old run dropped 2 frames somehow?

EDIT:
Wait, what? At 8-1, the old run is 2 frames ahead and then the old run is 21 frames behind at the start of 8-2 (which is what is should be). So the old run somehow gained two, dropped two, gained two, dropped two? Alright, idk. This is too confusing.

I'll just re-encode this new run and see where we are from there.

Yeah, that's right. The old run somehow gains +2 on 8-1, drops it for 8-2, then gains it back for 8-3, and maintains said +2 for 8-4.

Uhhh, yeah, If by 8-4 you mean 8-3. I mean, that's where the last frame difference occurs, it is just maintained for 8-4.

OK, I re-encoded the run with anrichan 3.3 from my dvd. Regardless of how the current SDA run compares, this run should be accurate (I hope):

I have to imagine that if it still doesn't line up with the SDA run, the SDA run has some slight encoding issue or something.

Alright, timed that one. It's the exact same as the earlier one, so, re-encoding the video wasn't the issue... it's still off by the exact same amount of frames on exact same points.

Thanks ZX497 for your efforts. This whole thing is driving me a bit mad honestly. I may have SDA replace my SDA run with this new run, but I do enjoy the axe jump in my old run more. However, if the old encode is flawed somehow, SDA might want to replace it with this new run regardless.

What you should do, is make another run right now, no matter how good or bad, just deathless. Then we could compare that one against both the new run, and the old one, to see which one it matches.

I'm sorry I keep doing this, but I really need to sleep. I worked like a 15 hour shift today.

Tomorrow night, I'll try and do another good run and see what I can manage. Maybe I'll improve again Wink

I'll try and post a nice run here to do more comparisons. The SDA run encode just has to be off. It has to be. But I KNOW I used anri for both runs, so it HAS to be that; I can't see any other possibility. But they are both 4:58, so no concern there.
