Hi! I'm andrewg!

Can someone time this in virtualdub for me? I can't recall how to do it. From frame before movement to frame after hitting the axe.

I think I may have beaten my run by 1 frame... lol
Oh wow... This is way too awesome if you have improved that run!!!  I'm not good at such timing, so I'll let someone else test it.

I just announced it at AGDQ though :D.
Did you link the right file? That's only 495 bytes in size O_o
Whoops. Will link it later. Check my twitch if you want to see the run. I did a sidebyside comparison on stream an hr ago.
Yeah, I checked that one out already, lol... the synchronization is incredible xD

VLC Player's "frame by frame" feature (under view->advanced controls) is accurate if you count the seconds, then add in the remainder of frames.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
OK, yeah, so I still don't know which run is faster. I mean, it's not like it really matters all that much, but I'm curious. They might be EXACTLY the same run time. I can't seem to go frame by frame in virtualdub accurately.

Here's the run I just did:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/w52ru3v5xqfwhzn/mario1_1000.mp4

EDIT: If anyone knows how to time it frame by frame, please do (from the frame that "400" appears on screen to the frame after hitting the axe). It would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT2: I'd like to make a side by side comparison video with them playing together to the exact frame as well. I think it makes for a somewhat interesting watch. I have no idea how to do this either... Maybe I'll bother coolmatty again.

EDIT3: Errr... I don't know which run is faster.
Using a selection tool in my video editor I get 4:58.5.  It doesn't count frames sadly.  I do have a way to put the videos side by side as well.  I dont mind doing it.  What is the other run's location? the one on SDA?
Hi! I'm andrewg!
yes, it's the run on SDA. Can you put them together exactly? That would be fantastic

yeah, i should be able to.  I'll edit this post when I get it done.  shouldn't take more then a few minutes.  Also, I wont be able to slow the video down to play by frame, but I will be able to check the frame difference once the videos are edited together
Alright, so, if I timed it according to instructions...

- the first frame was the one where 400 appeared on the screen, the very next frame was the one when Mario took his first step.
- the last frame was the one where all the sprites disappeared from the screen, only to return the next frame.

... the framecount would be 17909. I don't know what's the magic number we're looking for here, though.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I got 17909 as well, I just figured out I could time it while encoding. Smiley Which mean it beats my old 4:58 of 17916. A 6 or 7 frame improvement. I don't recall the frame it is stopped, but it SHOULD be the frame where mario disappears.

Which would be 17909 frames = 4:58.782 = My new best and a very slightly better world record!!! Haha. A whole 0.116 seconds of improvement! Hahaha
I like that WR's for this game are now timed in frames rather than actual time. In any case, grats andrewg! Cheesy

Congrats, great run! Also, it's worth noting virtualdub starts the recording at frame "0", so there's actually 17910 frames there... but, the actual "running time" is still 17909, cause 0 is, well, just the start Tongue

Anyway, yeah, congrats Andrew! Smiley

EDIT:

I wanted to be thorough, so I timed the old recording the same way I timed this one, and I got 17914 (17915 including frame "0") frames for it. So, according to my timing, it's a 5 frame improvement.
Congrats

for whatever reason I can't get the "full" videos of both side by side, just the center of each.  they are 3 frames apart at the end though.  If you would like to see the video anyway, I'll upload it.  I would trust those frame counts over iMovie though.

EDIT: Here's the video.  I saved it in 2 ways, a PiP and a side by side.  I can confirm that they start on the same frame in both videos.  the side by side, the new run is on the right.  the new run is the bigger picture in the PiP.

Whoops, wrong button O_o
I also get exactly 5 frames. But..

In 8-1 the timer appears 2 frames later. I thought I understood frame rules, shouldn't the difference be a multiple of 21?
In 8-2 the timer appears 23 frames sooner.
In 8-3 the timer appears 23 frames later.
In 8-4 you finish 7 frames sooner.
So it adds up to -5.
I just don't know how that makes sense. Can someone explain it to me or am I doing all wrong to begin with?
okay, i'm glad I'm not the only who notices that Blubbler.  check out my videos I posted above... that is really weird.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
When are you guys beginning time? Because if it's from the title screen, there could be error.

The 21 frame rules happen in between levels. There should be 21 frames difference between the two videos 8-2s' beginnings. That is, The new run should be 21 ahead of the old at the first frame of 8-2. If not, maybe it's something to do with dvd recording? I don't know what else would be the issue. Are you comparing the run on SDA to the run I posted?

EDIT: Then at the start of 8-3, they should be IDENTICALLY matched. If not, I'll be confused.

EDIT2: The explanation for that coukd be the fact that it's Imovie. At least, I can't think of anything else, except for lag frames that could happen mid-game (but this usually only occurs at Bowser fights (not any part of the warp run). Comparing both runs in virtualdub SHOULD make them exactly 21 frames apart at the beginning of 8-2 and then identical at the start of 8-3.

I lined the videos up based on the 400 appearing at the start of 1-1

at 8-3, there is a 1 frame difference between the runs

If I load them in Avidemux and cut everything before the timer appears, your old run is 2 frames ahead, when the timer appears in 8-3.

Hi! I'm andrewg!
That's really bizarre. The only other thing I could think of is some sort of difference between duckhunt/smb carts and smb carts, but I can't recall what I used for both runs. The nes framerate is like 59.94003 or something right? Does the 21 frame not necessarily apply to console runs? Really, if that's the case, I have no answer as to how that could be.

I recorded both runs with the same dvd recorder, and encoded them with the same program. And the 21 frame rule on console should apply perfectly as far as I'm aware. Would there be a difference in high quality opposed to low, etc?

Both of you are getting different results, so I'm thinking it's gotta be some sort of frame rate difference between programs? As far as I know, if you compare the two runs in virtualdub, the split should be 21 frames. I'm not too knowledgable about the encoding process, the framerates, etc. I'm not exactly sure what could cause that.
