Howdy. I've been practicing this game for a speed run for a while now, and I am almost ready to record a run. Doing a practice run last night yielded a time of 1:09:30, timed from when I started moving outside the castle to touching the big star after the third Bowser was defeated. This beats Marshmallow's time by over 3 minutes, and I plan to go as low as 1:05 when it's all over.

I need clarification on something, though. After beating the second Bowser, in the basement, you can just hop back into the level and warp up to the castle lobby. This saves 7 or 8 seconds over simply running back up to the lobby manually. Is this sort of teleporting allowed? There might be a use for it somewhere else as well, I'd need to check.

Also I'll be recording to VHS and will have to send it to Nate or something. Just so you know.

So yeah, I'm doing a run. If anyone has any extreme tricks they've been keeping secret, I'd sure like to hear about them  Wink

Yes, it's already done (and required) in the 16-star run.

Don't forget SP speed!!!

Good luck.  Grin

Hey Radix, long time no see. What is SP speed?
I love FuSN 1G - SG1!
Videos have Short Play (records all frames) Long Play (skips half the frames) and Super Long Play or Ultra Play or whatever that's really crappy. Short Play is really, REALLY, recommended.

aka hit the speed button on your VCR's remote until it displays "SP"

Right, got it.
theres also EP (extended play)... while we were... on the subject...

BEST OF LUCK ON RUN! Smiley

Just did a 1:05:11 run, but was not recording, to my extreme misfortune. I'm definitely going for 1:04:XX now (maybe even 1:03:XX, but don't count too much on that). Hopefully it can be done sometime in the next week.  Grin

Awesome. Can't wait.  Smiley
Light Speed! *shoom!*
Good luck on that.  I'm sure it'll be impressive to see! ^_^
Anything beating Marshmallows time must be pretty insane! Anyway, im keeping a look out as it is one of my favourites. Good luck!

1:04:44. Finally broke 1:05, but it was a run with some unacceptable mistakes that really added up (even had a death). I'm 100% going for 1:03:XX now, hopefully on the weekend if I can figure out recording once and for all  Huh?
bah, dont mind the mistakes too much... they give it character (such as the 120 star run :D). but still, such an amazing improvement... over one of marshy's none the less!

i cant wait to see this.
just one quick question

are using the same route as the previous video has (same stars), or are you just using the same route and just inproving the route for individual stars?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Maybe it's me, but those two options seem identical  Shocked

I actually started this run completely from scratch, sometime in February I think. I just kept looking for fast ways to do stars until I had 70 that I believed were the fastest (when taking castle time into account as well). I didn't watch Marshmallow's 1:12 until I had my run all planned out, but (not surprisingly) I use most of the same stars he does. I believe I do 8 stars differently from him, saving nearly 2 minutes in the process (not even counting castle time, which I'm positive I have less of).

Just recorded a 1:05:47 or so. I won't be keeping it, but my new goal is 1:02:XX. Here's why.

Things were going perfectly up until Lethal Lava Land, when I fell from the top of the volcano all the way to the bottom, losing 20+ seconds.

I continued to do well until Chests in the Current, when I spent about 15 seconds just trying to open the last chest. Blah.

The entire second floor went without any mistakes at all except for Blast to the Lonely Mushroom. The Shy-Guy flew away before I could bounce off his head, so I ran to the end of the rolling log and tried to long jump straight to the mushroom. I've done that dozens of times, and it's even faster, but I opted to use the Shy-Guy during the run because sometimes an invisible wall appears in front of the mushroom if you long jump, and you die. Well, that's exactly what happened when I tried long jumping here. So I died and lost probably 35 seconds.

In Tick-Tock Clock, I lost 40+ seconds to various dickings around.

Then Rainbow Ride came... Triangles, Swingin in the Breeze, and the Red Coins all were done without error. And I mean, TOTALLY without error. It was poetry in motion... Then I proceeded to lose 2 minutes and 10 seconds on Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow, including 2 deaths and at least 5 gigantic falls. Aw hell, there went my 1:03.

So if we add these mistakes up, we have exactly 4 minutes. Take that away from 1:05:47, and I've got 1:01. I'm not counting on playing that perfectly again, but it's not entirely out of the question. 1:02 would still make me extremely happy.

I've got the time (and patience) for 2 more runs today. Hopefully one of 'em will be golden.
...
Holy shit. Shocked I wonder if anyone will ever get it lower than 1 hour. 8) Good luck.

Wow, 1:02! When you get that, it's going to beat Marshmallow's record by 10 minutes. Can't wait to see it, once it's finished.

Argh, I'm pissed. Just pulled a 1:03. The seconds were between 30 and 50, I forget exactly. It's a new world record, anyway  Roll Eyes

Up until Rainbow Ride, the only disaster I can recall at all was a simple death in Lethal Lava Land, maybe 25 seconds lost.

Then, of course, the designers had to save one of the most technically-demanding levels for last...

Tricky Triangles, 1 death + tons of suckage = 43 seconds lost.

Swingin in the Breeze, 1 giant fall + some putzing around = 27 seconds lost.

Red Coins, meh, a slight mistake for only 5 seconds.

Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow, one big fall for 9 seconds loss.

Oh yeah, then I missed two Bowser throws in the final battle... at least 30 seconds right there.

All of this adds up somewhere in the neighborhood of 2:10 lost... That would be 1:01 easy. What the hell, I'll go for it!  Shocked

Stay tuned!

Heh, the estimate keeps going down.

If only all speed runners were so determined.
Ben Goldberg
I hope that estimate gets under 1 hour, you would be a god.

Heh, what can I say? I want it to be a good run, perhaps one that no one will ever want to challenge  Smiley

EDIT: Sub-hour would be nuts. Certainly it could be done with save states and emulators and whatnot, but a human player would have a helluva time with it.
Precursor
Sub-hour is probably possible, but something has yet to be discovered (speed trick, different route, something like it) before it's going to be reality.

And I don't know what the hell I'm doing in this thread at all, since I hate Super Mario 64.
KratosJudgment
Are you playing on the Pal or NTSC version because it would suck if you play Pal and have to add the extra time due to certain reasons.
