Hi! I'm andrewg!
I've been trying to improve the current record of this.

it's funny, i hadn't watched the record video, and i had figured out different ways to do things, and in the video he already has done near impossible things I manage when I'm playing.

I figured the best way to get star 1 was exactly the same thing I did when I played...

The run was played very nicely... I may be able to improve it wioth some luck, but i'll need to experiment on a few other stars and see if i can find a faster route.

Now that I am watching this, i noticed i might notr be able to beat this, but i'll still try.

EDIT: wow you figured all the crazy things i did, like in the boo house haha.

This is turning out to be a really good speedrun...

Hi! I'm andrewg!
I'm very good at the game, so i could beat it, but I'm not sure, I would have to learn a lot more...
Forward standard-by-ten .

Hi! I'm andrewg!
so far I'm pretty good at getting 20 stars or so. need some more practice. The only things that could be improved by even 10 seconds are like the bowser fights, and im bad at those.

I guess just wait a couple months, and i might turn up a good run.

Anyway, go for it. Cheesy
I also have some video on my PC of Mario beaten in 18:59 by some guy named Holy_Moly. I think it wasn't put on the site because of audio problems or something.
So you are trying to beat the 70 star run?

That run is really, really, great. My favorite on the site so far. Best of luck to you in your attempts to beat this. LeCoureur's perseverence in this run was truly inspiring, never settling for just a run that beat Marshmallow's run before that. He kept posting lower and lower times, hoping for a sub hour run. If you can improve it, then hats off to you.

Lol; yeah, but there might also have been one or two other reasons...  Roll Eyes

Good times.

Eh? Is there something I missed?

Oh, sorry.  Holy_Moly used to be a regular here, but he had *a little incy wincy fight* [note: colossal] with Radix, and was banned (the first and only to date, I believe).  They were disputing the superiority of divx and wmv and Holy_Moly started using.. let's just say quite vulgar and obscene language.  And the speedrun in question, with its abysmal audio outputs, was the particular source of the debate; technically, he does have the world record, but it won't ever be seen on SDA.
something or another
I thought that was just the 16 star run?

Either way, definitely good luck.  LeCoureur put up one of the most well respected runs around here on SDA.... it would be quite a feat to go sub 1 hour.  Possible, but a feat.

Speaking of which, whatever happened to LeCoureur's 16 star improvement?

Yeah, it was.  I meant the one Kubbles had on his PC by Holy_Moly.  Wink

If you can beat the 70-star run, you will get a huge amount of respect from everyone probably.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
there are only a few places time could be saved, Hmm.. well, I will try this, and i bet it wont work, I wanna get at least a 1:10 or so.
Nintendo 64 enthusiast
You're not terribly specific. Where, exactly, could the time be saved at? I'm curious to see where LeCoureur could have improved, because the run looked nearly perfect to me.
Well, there's the obvious technical improvements.  The run's execution was near flawless, but there were a few points where improvements could have been made(that little incident with chain chomp is one of them; there were a ton of really little things too like missed wall jumps and that backflip against whomp).  Of course, not making those mistakes and doing everything he did right is pretty ridiculous.

I also remember hearing some route discussion that perhaps going to Jolly Roger Bay for a few stars may be faster than getting some of the really slow ones he gets(Stomp on Thwomp in particular was a really slow star; it may be worth going to JRB just to avoid this one).  But yeah, I just rewatched his run, and I can say that that would not be the one I'd choose to try to topple, but if you think you can go for it.  Beating it will probably be 90% better technical skills(which is somewhat nuts since the current run is one of the technically best runs on the site) and maybe 10% route improvement.  Of course, be ready to be frustrated as Rainbow Ride and Bowser in the Sky are the two most likely places to kill you in the run, and there're conveniently at the very end of it all.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
i'm trying to see if those 70 stars are absolutely the fastest way.

yeah, the chain chomp is an example of an error, as well as wasting maybe 20 seconds on the second bowser.

i haven't watched the whole thing, but it seems to me like he has figured out everything i have. "

on a side note: I almost beat the world record for smb1 minimalist today Smiley
something or another
JRB is in general incredibly slow.  There is one star with a glitch where you can swim upwards rapidly onto a spike near the beginning and jumpdiving off of it right to the platform with the star on it.  That star is like, 12 seconds and is the only fastish star in JRB.

I don't understand your 1:10 target; the current one is 1:01...?
Doing that one star in JRB would probably be a good replacement for Stomp on Thwomp.  Stomp on Thwomp is just a really slow star in general.
something or another
Yeah but it's damn cool and plus for JRB it would take 20 seconds or so just to get in and out of JRB for one star.
Hmm, how long does the castle secret star in the aquarium take?  There are 8 stars behind that door after all, and if I recall correctly getting that star warps you to the center of the main lobby of the castle.  Ok, so that's an almost negligible savings in travel time, but it's there, and I don't recall that star being a very long one(even if swimming is too slow).

Also, cool does not matter.  Ok, so if it takes 35 seconds in castle travel time and actually getting that one star, I think it probably still works out to be faster than Stomp on Thwomp.  I won't deny; it was incredibly cool to see him tear through Tick Tock Clock like that, but we're so close to sub-1 hour that we really have to shave every second we can.  If that run's honestly to be beaten, better execution at a few points(Bowser, chain chomp) and small route improvements are needed.

Also, on Dire Dire Docks, does the wall of water not recede until after you do Board Bowser's Sub?  If it doesn't, you could save some seconds by doing the other stars for that level first as you won't have to run quite as far to jump back into the level.

I'm really fishing for improvements; it's a good run so there's not a whole lot that's not obvious technical stuff(don't run into that wall he ran into, etc.).  Hmm, about Cool Cool Mountain, how slow are the red coins there?  I know the place is relatively easy to get around, and that could be a workable star.  With all the coins on the slide, I was even thinking about the 100 coin star for that level, but that's probably crazy.  There's also the concentrated 8 red coins on Hazy Maze Cave, but odds are they aren't worth it etiher.  Hmm, I'm just throwing ideas around really.

Yes, DDD waterline does not recede until star 1 is complete.

I believe the current 70 star already does the treasure box one, which is pretty much the only fast one.  Manta Ray's reward requires you to finish board bowser's sub.  The others all require you to swim to the second area of DDD which takes a very very long time.  I suppose Manta Ray's reward could be done after board bowser's sub and/or bowser in the fire sea... oh wait the current 70 star already does that, never mind.  Nope, we can't turn to DDD.

Surprisingly collecting those 8 coins in the secret aquarium takes a very long time.  I'll time it and see.  And no, the secret aquarium drops you back in the JRB lobby.

edit:  The secret aquarium star takes a whole 48 seconds to complete and does indeed drop you in the middle of the JRB lobby.

edit2: the two fastest JRB stars are through the jet stream, which takes about 30 seconds and blast to the stone pillar, which takes about 23 seconds.
The current run does 3 stars at DDD.  The first one is board bowser's sub, the second is the manta ray, and the third is the chests.  I'm just saying doing the chests first could save a small amount of time.  I also didn't know you had to board bowser's sub for the manta ray to appear.

All of them are supposed to require your doing board bowser's sub first, except maybe the chests.  They're all possible without though, cept manta ray.  Some of them just require some trickery, especially the red coins; actually the red coins can be done faster without the floating poles and with the sub, but it's hard to pull off.

http://www.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~cbright/sm64/70stars/lecoureur103times.html

There is a list of the times it took me for each star in the run, thanks to Curtis Bright for that. You can see that Stomp on the Thwomp wasn't the slowest, though I will admit the "cool" factor did play something of a role in me choosing it  8)

The Chain Chomp mistake was really bad, I know. I should have reset after that but I had so many runs by then and perhaps nearly to the point of burnt out so I kept going anyway... and look what happened.

I will never agree that JRB should be entered. Nothing but slow in there, although I'd never heard of swimming UP the pillar. Anyone have a vid?

EDIT: And about the 16 star improvement I was planning, well, remember I did an 18:08 back in... September? So technically that is the non-TAS record, not 18:59 (which was actually timed to 19:01 if I remember right). I would have sent it in by now if I hadn't taped over it for something or another.
