Make that a Definitely Able to Come for me, just need a set date whenever it's figured out to get me some plane tickets. If anyone else in NJ wants to tag along, let me know!
I'd love to come but can't. Yes I'm only posting just to say that. I'll try to be available in the stream chat though if you have that setup so I can help mod it. If a miracle does happen though, maybe I can show up.
I'd definitely like to be a part of this, but a few problems put me at "maybe" status for right now:
- I live in Minnesota and I'm not sure how far of a drive that is - My friend would probably come with, as he'd have to drive us there since he's more comfortable driving out of state (while I chip in for half of the gas, of course) - Only my friend has what you'd call a "job." I make money through other means, like church choir and personal reasons I won't get into (not illegal, just too personal). If he doesn't want to do it, then I won't be able to make it
Other than that, if all goes well, I plan on running Diddy Kong Racing. I'm working on improving the 100%, which is currently 2:37. So, my rough estimate is to shoot for sub-2:33, at the very least. Also, if there's still room, we'd probably have to stay at the house and we're fine with a carpet and sleeping bags (which we can bring with us), since even with his job, my friend and I wouldn't be able to afford staying at a hotel.
I'll update if anything changes.
EDIT: Change my game to Super Mario 64 70-Star Run, please. Turns out I'm really terrible at DKR. If I can get practicing and find the current route/time, I should be able to have it ready by the time of the marathon. Rough estimate of 1:15-1:20 (the guy who did it on Youtube did it in, I believe, sub-1 hour, but it was insane!)
the current record for 70 stars is 52:06. a marathon run should definitely be 1 hour or less unless the runner choked really hard. if you were running this game a couple years ago, there have been a lot of advances in the route and level of execution by japanese runners (this game is the most popular to speedrun over there at the moment). i'd recommend watching the current record, here and here, to get a sense of the route and the tricks you're probably not familiar with.
if you want to really get good at the game in time for the marathon and do a run on par with jiano's run from the previous marathon, join #speedrunslive on irc.speeddemosarchive.com. sm64 is raced constantly there by jiano and his friends, and they could teach you how to do the various tricks & you can improve by doing races.
Well, first I have to get the cart. I posted a topic in the Trading Post, but if that takes too long, I can run to the local store in my hometown (not where I live now) and pick it up.
I will definitely check out those two runs you linked. As for joining the IRC and racing on stream, I don't have access to a free IRC client and my stream quality sucks (webcam only and no good microphone). The videos should definitely help, though.
EDIT: But, then again, as I said before, this all depends on if my friend actually wants to come with and drive us out there. I could drive, too, that's not the problem. I don't make enough money to get there on my own unless he chips in for gas and tags along. Whether I drive or he drives, I wouldn't be attending alone and that's what I'm worried about, in terms of room. By the way, your first video link doesn't work. All it does is play a black screen with Japanese writing for 26 minutes. Second video works fine, though.
Being from MN myself, let me tell you it's gonna be a loooong drive. From where I live to Salt Lake City is some almost 18-19 hours (plus time for gas refills, meals, breaks, etc). I'm gonna fly Southwest out of the cities (if I go), which is a lot easier and might be cheaper in the end, but that depends on the time frame and how much gas costs this summer (If you book this way, use the Wanna Get Away online offer, which is generally the cheapest option).
I will definitely look into that. Flying might be a little easier and, if I start saving now, I could probably come up with the money by myself and not have to drag my friend along. When you say "Southwest", do you mean "Southwest Airlines"? I don't want to assume. I will have to definitely look into that, then, and start planning. Thanks for the info!
about the diddy kong racing, it'd probably be better to ng+ it for the marathon so you have t.t. and the run just goes way faster and it looks more impressive. 0xwas usually beats it in about 2:10 getting everything, though obviously if you dont have much experience with it, would have to raise that estimate by probably 5+ minutes.
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/12005103 Here is a sample recording of one of his 2:10:xx runs. I think his best is 2:07 or 2:08, but you get a general idea of route/strats that can lead to a really good time.
also, for irc just use something like trillian or pidgin if you can't get mirc for whatever reason. i use pidgin (mostly cuz i'm too lazy to log into/use a gazillion different programs) and it works fine for irc.

Yes. You can get to their website at www.southwest.com They fly out of Terminal 2 in MSP, just so you know. And there's a Park & Fly there that didn't cost me much money for my week long trip to DC (it's less if you have AAA), even in the covered building. And no baggage fees from Southwest either (up to 2 bags at no more then 50lbs each, I believe), which is awesome if you're having to bring several consoles like I had to.
Upgrading to a probably as well, money is the only debate at this point, but if I save any snow-shoveling money I get I should be able to come no problem.
After having talked with coworkers about summer days off, the other night auditor asked for that weekend off, so I'm going to have to work. So I've gone from "probably" to "definitely not". Sorry guys, but I'll come to the winter marathon.
I wouldn't be able to make it down there, but I could do regular commentary on the games for some more consistent talks on it. I love doing commentary I may not know everything about sequence breaks but I'm sure between now and then I could get filled in on a bunch of them, and I very VERY much know my games and what's going on... I also have a strong Commentating voice and a decent microphone and a great Internet connection.
If you'd like something like that, I can totally do that for you guys... Or I could remote stream a MMX speed run, or my LTTP Alphabetical run.
Another note, I can send some SNES controllers your way w/ Extension cables if you guys ABSOLUTELY need them, i remember hearing early in the stream that you guys were having issues with busted controllers.

If I'm not mistaken, it was just romscout who was having that problem and as a result could not run SMW. There'll be plenty of SNES equipment to go around, so you can knock that worry off your list.
Just saying again, I'm definitely coming and bringing some gifts for the stream to donate for. Guess I'd need to commission a few things from MercuryZelda as well to be safe. Looking forward to it!
After experiencing the previous 2 marathons, I realized how much I enjoy this community and participating in it. Put me down as a maybe, but I'm fairly certain I can get the time off.
My main game is Mega Man 10, which is about 45 minutes. With a little bit of work, I can also run Mega Man 2, Mega Man 9, and Super Metroid (any %). The next game I'm going to work on is Secret of Evermore, but I don't know if I'll have it optimized enough by then.
I'd also bring some stuff to give away for donation. This will be fun!

Well, Seth Glass posted a couple months ago saying he was coming. Would definitely give us a good Mega Man block of games.
I'm new here but have been lurking for a few years now :-p. I don't speed run anything at a level that I'd be willing to put on camera, but I do live in downtown SLC and would love to help withthis marathon. I can give people rides too and from airports, move equipment, and I have room on the floors/couches of my apartment for about 6 extra people. I'm a huge fan of your marathons and seeing this one in my backyard has got me excited!

I don't accept payment for the stuff I make for marathons. I'd be glad to donate some prizes to this marathon and mail them to Essentia before it starts so she can show them off on stream. I just need a firmed up game list so I can decide what to make.
I'll make it official now: put me down as Probably Coming (The -only- reason I'm not saying Definitely now is because I may be in the Provo MTC when the marathon starts I'll update once I get my call).
The only games I feel I'll be confident enough to run by then are (given with real-time estimates): Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - approx. 2 hours Riven: The Sequel to Myst (PC) - 15 minutes IMPORTANT: I do not have a computer that can stream games with any degree even approaching mediocrity. Every attempt has resulted in unbearable lag. I would be very grateful to any who would volunteer their own computer use and allow me to install and stream Riven on it.
Though it's still up in the air, if the user Raen (not Rane) decides to come, we may try and run 1 or more games co-op. Very unsure on what, or even if we will, but I thought I would mention it.
If needed, I can also bring a SNES + 1 3rd party controller.
Will not need a bed. However, if possible, it would be more convenient for me to do my runs during the day (approx. 10 am - 10 pm)
One last thing, it appears that the first post of this topic still contains the old date of late July.
