If you don't use the Kindness thing you will actually have to plan out the entire run. It's more effort but I would certainly find it more entertaining.

The run will probably feature Lightning/Fury runes heavily. They tend to kill bosses fast, on the right characters. And because you won't be levelling, you need all the damage you can get in fewer turns so the bosses won't slaughter you.
I'm thinking I'll play through it over the weekend again as a refresher on the game, maybe with a guide so a lot of the thinking goes away.  I'll see how I do without leveling up and cutting corners.  I'm not entirely sure on the rules just yet but if I decide to do a run I'll get up to speed(pun intended) on them.

Is it pratical to do a 1 segment run without saving on a game like this?
Waiting hurts my soul...

You're probably best qualified to decide that since you have the game in front of you.  Consider though, that the game will be very random, most likely, and hours long.
Quote from Mishrak:
Well if it would make it a less attractive run, wouldn't it be better to do a run without it?

No. It's called a speed run.
Alright.  I'll see what I come up with.  Thanks for the info.
SDA Speedruns: 1
Reviving this thread because I have interest in speed running it after the CrystalsForLife marathon.  I would probably practice on emulator til I can get my hands on a disc, but am wondering if someone could explain these glitches (other than the Matilda glitch) so that I can see and understand how they work/what they do?
"Let's put a SMILE on that face!"
I'm also thinking about speedrunning this (currently working on Suikoden 1 and Final Fantasy Tactics, so sometime after that).

I'm going to copy-paste the glitches that I can find writeups about, let me know if there are other referenced glitches you want research into.

Armor Shop Glitch
You must have already recruited the armor shop owner to your armies cause for this trick to work. Once this has been done, go to his shop. This glitch involves some simple calculations, use the following example as a guide to see how it is done. Equip one character with Dragon Armor (23,000 potch), and make sure that at least two other characters have no armor equipped, but can wear Dragon Armor. You should also have 23,000 to 30,000 potch. Talk to the armorer, go to buy, then choose to purchase Dragon Armor. When prompted to place it in the bag or to equip it, choose to equip it on the character already wearing Dragon Armor. When prompted to sell the old armor or put it in the bag, cancel the action. You should still be in buying mode for the armor. Simply purchase and equip the two armorless characters Dragon Armor. The potch meter will reset to somewhere around 999,999.

Level 99
When a character is at Lv. 39 (Lv. 49 with a Fortune rune), go to L'Renouille. Fight a group of Highland x6. Kill off all party members but him, then defeat the enemy. His level should shoot up to 99.

wow people reusing my old topic Tongue

Kindness Rune
Gives more damage the more 'liked' the character is. You can underflow this number and their attack damage will go crazy high.

Let's Dance!
I found a webpage detailing some interesting bugs that may be useful.

http://suikodenbugfixes.wikispaces.com/Suikoden+II+Join+at+99+Bug
- Affects a couple characters, but I'm not sure how precisely it's triggered
Edit:  Looks like the value reads some garbage data when checking the hero's level that is usually zero, but sometimes NOT, so figuring out how to manipulate that would be the key to this.  "When it subsequently loads the value given back by MP_Level_Sub, as 32-bits, it will get the byte stored, along with three bytes that will contain whatever values were left in them. "

http://suikodenbugfixes.wikispaces.com/Suikoden+II+Rune+Unite+Bug
- This one has huge potential, if you set up the formation/characters right, it lets you get off 5 megamagic Unites for only 1 MP each on all characters.  Which is friggin ridiculous.  Basically one person does a Unite with everyone else in the party.

http://suikodenbugfixes.wikispaces.com/Suikoden+II+Luca+Battle+Bug
- This may or may not be useful, it would make the fight slower, but near impossible to lose.  You trick the game into putting Riou into the back row, and NO ONE in the front row.  Luca can't attack back row, so he's unable to attack the hero.  Maybe good for low-level strats?

Edit:  And here's more details on the Kindness Rune glitch Lag just mentioned: http://suikodenbugfixes.wikispaces.com/Suikoden+II+Kindness+Rune+Bug
"Let's put a SMILE on that face!"
The Kindness Rune thing intrigues me more than the other glitches.  I always enjoyed Suikoden 1 more, but there's no real glitches to try and exploit like Suikoden 2 seems to have.  I'll definitely look into this more.

As I mentioned a few years ago, Kindness Rune makes the entire game from Lakewest trivial as long as you manage their friendship value appropriately.

New Game+ would make the run slightly easier because you could import a slightly-more-broken-than-usual Humphrey, Flik, etc.
"Let's put a SMILE on that face!"
I imagine that if you underflow it, then the clock ticks over, it un-underflows.  Would that be the only necessary management?
sda loyalist
Yeah pretty much. If you make them hate you enough then you will get 999 ATK until the end of the run.
Let's Dance!
So kill them off five times and you should be good to go?
"Let's put a SMILE on that face!"
I'll definitely play around with this in the near future.  Finding glitches like this will make the game a lot more runnable for me.
sda loyalist
Something like that, yeah. AFAIK nothing else changes friendship value, so you could do it early to Riou then reap the rewards once you roll around to Lakewest.
All the things
That is an incredibly useful site/project. I really wish such things existed for more games.

But yes, the Kindness Rune bug sounds pretty game-breaking. I seem to remember having the "recruit at lvl 99" bug happen to me a few times, but IIRC it is not a useful bug as the level is merely 99 while the stats remained low. Unless it was another bug that I'm thinking of.
Let's Dance!
Yeah, my jaw dropped when I found that site via googling, haha.  It's pretty fantastic.
SDA Speedruns: 1
I remember recruiting members into my party at level 99 on emulator, but thought it was an emulator bug only. Is it possible on console too?
"Let's put a SMILE on that face!"
I'm fairly sure it is, but I'm not sure what triggers it, or if it's just dumb luck.
All the things
From reading the site it's a matter of putting more stuff on the stack before having the recruiting subroutine play. Shouldn't be too hard to find a consistent setup for.
All the things
So uh, I seem to have acquired a copy of this game. Expect me to start a casual replay of it, followed by maybe some routing/glitch testing?
"Let's put a SMILE on that face!"
Awesome.  I think the only questionable glitch at this point is the "join at level 99" glitch and if there's a way to trigger it, so if you happen to find anything about that, it's worth looking into.

These chars could be recruited at 99 with the bug: Georg, Hoi, Mazus, Pesmerga, Vincent, Anita, L.C.Chan. It's not very predictable so I can't give you a recipe for it. Like Omnigamer said, it probably depends on what happened recently. Note that all these chars are optional, though certainly they take different amounts of time to recruit.

I've had this happen with Hoi more often than him actually turning up at a sane level. :p
SDA Speedruns: 1
I remember that when I played casually years ago, I ended up getting multiple 99s on the same playthrough. May be a connecting thing.
