Hy there! I'm new to the forum (only followed/lurked the site/forum until now).

I noticed the lack of runs and discussion of the suikoden saga. Since i'm a fan, especially of 1 and 2, i started planning a low% speedrun of suikoden 1.
I already got a 6h 4mins in the last saving point with no real planning and with "alot" of mistakes. That run was basically rushing the game having in mind only a few party members: valeria (falcon rune can be pretty consistent), stallion (true holy and always getting first attack), luc(can't think of other character to do good magic damage in low%). I also used viktor and flik to do some extra physical damage which isn't a good reason at all.

In the next time i'm thinking of setting a more decent party, since luc is pretty bad in normal battles and viktor and flik may be easilly replaced. And also checking more in depth what chests i should definetly get and some exploits that might be useful (like teleporting to HQ and back to kalekka to skip it).

Any sugestions or previous speed runs are welcome Smiley

100% runs=great to watch
Good luck in doing this!  Definitely a series of games I'd like to see represented in the various applicable categories on SDA.  8)

If you need a list of mandatory characters, the non-highlighted rows are the ones. It could be helpful in planning what characters to use.

A shame that Kai isn't a mandatory Star, his unite with Tir is very helpful for large groups (if there are any forced/boss battles with large groups, that is)

I wouldn't suggest using Luc heavily simply because magic animations are very, very slow. Although there's no major rune problems like with Happiness(?) on Suikoden 2, I think you should be able to get enough damage simply by use of the Attack command and maybe a big summon to finish things off. Suikoden's bosses are a lot harder generally (gonna love your Zombie Dragon fight) so I wish you a lot of luck with this one.
Agreed that it would be cool with a Suikoden run. I was gonna do a practice run of this but gave up after hours of trying to get a holy rune from the first mosquito fight.
Well tbh i'm not trying to get the holy rune from the mosquitos (at least yet), they don't appear that much and the drop rate is very low, so for it to be useful it had to drop in the first 10 mins max.
About the magic animations, well yeah they're slow, but if they deal 3/4 times more damage than a normal attack it kinda pays off doesn't it? I usually only use soul eater's magic in normal battles and the rest in bosses.

Btw... if i recruit some non-mandatory characters it doesn't count has low%? When i first thinked about this run i assumed the bare minimum as at least the teleport and blinking mirror (and maybe some elevator :P) but both aren't mandatory...
Glad to hear someone is running this game. I love the Suikoden series, and it`d be great to see some of them on this site. I`ve been toying with the idea of running S1 myself, but I also got sick of trying to get a Holy Rune from the mosquitoes. Tongue

Is there any particular reason you`re doing low%? Since there aren`t any runs of the game up yet, wouldn`t it be better to simply go with any% to get the best possible time?

I agree about magic...it`s probably a good idea to use it for bosses, since it deals a lot more damage than attacks. It`s been a while since I played S1, though. And I guess you`re not using the bribe glitch to skip the boss battles? That`d probably make for a boring run to watch anyway...

In any case, best of luck with the project, and I`ll definitely watch it if you get it posted.

Well of course there will be some situations where Magic will be the best thing to use. In general it is slow and clunky, the main advantage being hitting more than one enemy, which is usually not applicable to bosses. Unions are generally faster and do decent damage when your attack is high, which you want to be high anyway so you can use the Attack command a lot.

I'd suggest doing an any% first, as you can optimize and not worry about if you're getting extra items or team members if it means you'll be getting an overall better time.  Just a suggestion though, it's up to you to decide what you want to run.
I'm mulling over the idea of doing an any% SS run of this game (I know that would be long, but I don't have the patience for segmented).  I don't have the means to record right now, but I figure I will at some point, and by then hopefully I'll have this game down (I've played it quite a bit, but hardly ever for speed).

Although the idea of having to get a holy rune from the mosquitoes does put a damper on that idea. :/

Well, even if you can't post videos, you can talk about the route and strategies you plan to use and those you've investigated and found not worth it. Getting the Holy Rune is probably main reason someone hasn't already completed a run of this game. I wonder what the timing difference would really be.
There's a word for that
Running from battles is pretty quick, and there are still findable/purchasable Holy Runes available reasonably early on IIRC.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I made an unfinished TAS of this a while ago, it might be useful.

The holy rune saves shitloads of time, maybe you could make an extra segment for acquiring that?

Not in a SS run, but yeah, making a segment just to get the holy rune from the mosquito is obviously the best way to start off the segmented run.

Thanks for the TAS link. Just to have it listed here, the bribe glitch as explain here allows you to bribe any monster or boss by selecting confirm twice. You need to pay the money (have the money to pay), and you don't get anything from the battle (no exp, items, or gold), so I don't know how helpful that would be; it also removes the strategy from the game if included.
The bribe glitch would be pretty handy, and if it works for every boss, a good run boils down to getting a Holy Rune and getting luck with Gaspar.

Another lynchpin with a low-level run would be the duels; you only have to fight Kwanda and Teo I believe, but you need to be strong enough to defeat both.  So probably just need some grinding on the way, nothing out of the way or anything.  (a 100% run would be even harder, though, as you'd need to grind Pahn up to defeat Teo)

The glitch works on every single encounter in the game except Golden Hydra on NA version.
So you'd only have to grind for the two duels and the final boss (as well as any bosses pre-Gaspar that you can't afford to bribe).  Not too bad.
Been doing a casual run of this; if I consider speedrunning it, I'm gonna do a 'casual' any% run to see how it is.  A few thoughts:

-with luck, I'd only have to do Gaspar once (well twice, once to recruit him and maybe a second time to get funds)
-Kai is optional but is probably a must-get if level grinding is to be done pre-Teo (Teo gives you level 3 Soul Eater, which lets you use Hell)
-Kage and Fuma are also optional but they're really easy to get and help out a ton with major battles (100% chance you see what the enemy does next)
-the mosquitoes' Holy Rune is a must for segmented runs, but for SS it MIGHT be skippable (you can buy them in Kaku, and only 5000 bits)
Really looking forward to this. Cheesy I've done several casual speed runs of Suikoden I over the last few years. I'll keep an eye on the thread to see if I can help at all.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Someone should TAS this through memory watcher and see if there really are no special flags set from choosing to kill Kraze or not. Maybe he makes a cameo in the following games if you let him live?
"Let's put a SMILE on that face!"
Apologies for the gravedigging, but does anyone know if there is any kind of a Japanese speedrun of this or a full run anywhere else?  I was thinking about doing any% or 100% routing, and I was wondering if there are any prior resources before I start planning it out.

Here is a ss run done on emu by Rezard
SDA Speedruns: 1
I don't know how much gold/gil or whatever its called you will need for the run but in Suikoden 1, there is a town east of the starting town where you can play a minigame that can net you 999999 very quickly.

"Let's put a SMILE on that face!"
There's also the dice game that you can get 999999 in rather quickly.  I'm going to do a refresher run or two and try to figure out how much money you would theoretically need.

edit: that run will probably be very helpful, thanks.  although the emulator doesn't deal with loading times, and I haven't watched the whole thing to see if it's any% or 100%
