what exactly is it that defines a players quake style? after watching about a zillion quake demos in the last couple of years I think I can usually pick who a demo is by, but I don't really know why...? Can anyone describe their own/ anyone else's style?

and who has the best/most unique style?

Hmm..

Mouse rate has to be high, otherwise demos look sloppy. Sensitivity is a key thing as well, it has to be pretty low to make demos look good. It's also important that you don't swing your mouse all around and make too quick movements with it, in other case the demo looks like you don't know what you're doing.

Of course it's not good if you get stuck in places or miss shots.

Well there were some points..

Earlier not many people had a good style, nowadays almost anyone can make a good-looking demo. Still, the best styles imo: Markus, Daniel Lindberg and maybe now you. But as I said, many people have a good style nowadays.
it would be fun to put connor to the test Smiley
you up for it connor?

Good style seems to come automatically with good knowledge of your own bunnies and control.

A demo in good style is a demo where it's obvious that every bunny has been planned in advance, and performed the way it was planned. At least for short(ish) runs. That's a highly enjoyable, and easily understandable 'style' that can impress anyone. Beautifulness of execution also counts for style.

A more subtle 'style' is the ability to survive a 8:58 or 11:31 minute run under heavy fire... That's enjoyable once you learn to appreciate the skill it takes.

Smoothness and aim is what does it for me. Taipale used to be king of smoothness, but as Timo already pointed out, nearly anyone can make a good looking demo nowadays. Lindberg, Taipale, Bergendorff, Kurkela and Yonatan Donner (of course), are some of the oldtimers that spring to mind. What's enjoyable about their demos, are also the ability to keep a steady aim. Aim is just as important as smoothness if you ask me. Having a steady aim can really help a lot, even in runs where you have to shoot certain things in order to progress through the level.

Nowadays we have runners like Fitzgerald, Nieminen, Thore, Maglic, Berntsen, plus all the oldtimers I mentioned above of course.

But there's also the style of Peter Horvath, it's unique and I can't really put my finger on what it is that does it, but you can always tell a Horvath demo from others. Maybe using sv_aim 0.93 is the key  Wink

You could also argue that persistance and patience is important, but you can hardly call it style. Having a good mouse + mousepad also adds to the style. (Logitech MX500 mouse + a black IceMat owns!)
Connor's demos are the top of smoothness. It's almost as if he uses a very low mouse sensitivity.

I have to say the same thing as everyone else. Low sens is probably the key to smooth runs. And of course a good mouse and mousepad doesnt hurt

If I see a demo I usually cant pick the player. Maybe thats because I havent watched a lot of demos.
There is however one player that I think has a unique style and thats Jozsef Szalontai. His 'twitching' bunnies are easily detected, by me anyway Wink

I have to name a couple of guys that havent been mentioned. Carl Tholin and Thomas Bergendorff. I have tremendous respect for the 100% runs they do. They do it fast, but it looks so relaxed. Truely a joy to watch.

I can name one more guy that I can usually pick out. Basil De Vries. Can you believe that madman is playing quake with a trackerball!! I mean, how crazy can you get =D
