I'd say getting through Australia without the correct key is a major skip, regardless of how you do it. I'd prefer the glitchless/zipless/whatever run look more like the run on SDA.

I know you can skip the Cypher beam attack in Japan easily. Don't know about anything else.

You can skip:

Disc 1: Meaningless dialogue
Attack Boots: Unnecessary power-up
Cypher Plasma: Unnecessary power-up (Can disarm Matic with Spark Spell)
2nd encounter with Flash Blade at Red Dragon (Jump from mid-air glitch out of the pipe to prevent spawn trigger)

You can try to skip the Aqua Boots, but I think that run is impossible (being underwater slowly drains your health) and ultimately slower than collecting them.

There might be more that don't sequence-break the game. I honestly haven't played past China1 in a long time.

Would this run be an acceptable one? (Doesn't really matter - I'm gonna try it anyway!) Or is the glitched run going to be the only NES Strider run on SDA?

That sounds good.

For disarming Matic I know you can use Fire as well, so I'd guess a variety of Tricks work. All depends on which takes the least menu time to equip.

Awesome run!  Wow.
What is a man?

That is sick.. and it's even more sick that you lose like 4-5 seconds on mistakes, the run CAN go down to 4:25, wow...

Ziplock-  any plans to upload your run to youtube or anywhere else?  The fastest that's currently online without the zip mayhem, afaik, is 31:49.

edit:  also, what do people think about this for the any% categories:
--any% w/ pause-buffer zip glitch
--any% w/out pause buffer-zip glitch

agree? disagree? apathy?

oh hai manual zip that keeps happening to me:
http://www.twitch.tv/vid3odrome/c/3916942

i've got a nice route for any% no pause buffer zip that should save a nice chunk off the current best 31:49 (which is on emulator, btw) but i have yet to complete a run of course.  frame perfect slides are a thing.

Found a faster new route. No more shitty walljumps!!

Holy crap, that changes the landscape! This might even change the TAS route!

Nice find, dxtr!
Sorry to back-to-back (didn't login - can't edit).

Can anyone think of a way to get through Australia without sliding? Disc 1 would probably be the fastest route then. Maybe damage from the spikes?

are you doing the pause buffer zip route now?  is that what you're uploading here?  Just wondering if you can answer my questions above about your 19:30 run

Sorry, took forever to encode. Here's the mistake-ridden  19:30.

With all the awesome stuff being discovered with the pause-zip, I didn't wanna interrupt. Should probably be on two threads Smiley

As for the zip, I think dxtr's route is optimal. I tried it on an emulator and Disc 1 is not really that far from Disc 2 and leaves you way too weak and unable to slide. And killing yourself makes you sit through the opening dialogue again, despite having the disc. And furthermore, I don't think there's a way to get under that wall.

Unless someone can find an immediate way to unlock Australia without getting a Disc AND a way to get past the wall you need to slide under, I'd say dxtr's route is the best and should leave runners around 4:25ish - maybe lower?

Thanks for posting it!  sorry if I came off as pushy, i was just really curious how you saved so much time.  I see you're using the australia "getting shot through the door" skip.  Now I see how you cut off all that time from the other routes people were doing.  That's obviously way more optimized than the any% routes people were doing before (without the pause-buffer zip, of course.)  Nice work!  Smiley

I've found some extra stuff that can optimize movement in that route, which I'll post here in an hour or two after I do it on stream.  I think both routes can co-exist, though the pause buffer zip route is obviously more interesting and exciting to people right now...well, it probably always will be.  and your route really closes the gap between the two.  Still, definitely keep running it if you're still interested.

as promised:
a quick way to get up the vertical jumping section in Kazakh:

a clip in Egypt that lets you bypass the platforming section with the flying shooting guys:

Absnerdity's 31:49 had this jump spell usage in the Red Dragon that saves you from having to go all the way around:
http://www.twitch.tv/vid3odrome/c/3922491

also from 2:24 in jeffrosledger's vid, shows a scary way to optimize the very first jumps in Australia (which I didn't put in my vid because I haven't practiced them and they're tough):
http://www.twitch.tv/jeffrosledger/c/3919703

hope that stuff helps!  i'm super tired, which is why i sound sedated in my vids heh
Yeah it was a great find, but a week too late though Smiley

These tricks are awesome! I'm gonna use at least the Egypt one in my next attempt. Obviously, I made my run (with mistakes) to form some kind of framework for a faster one. With enough people on it, someone's gonna get it surprisingly fast. I'm definitely gonna try for a sub 19 this week.

Here's a couple things I've learned since I recorded:

- As Satoryu pointed out, the fire spell disarms Matic. It's really tough to get him in one sequence, but it can be done. But a safer route is to equip the fire, disarm him, hit him a few times with it, disarm him again, then deactivate it and finish him off with the cypher. That's a lot faster than switching back and forth more than once.

- The jumping to avoid the floor spike enemy triggers in Africa like the new sub 5 runs is faster.

- Sliding on the first platform in Kazakh 2 with the flying enemies will keep him on the screen longer, which is ideal.

I would love to find a trick for the run killing double long jump in Egypt.

I think this run can be pretty interesting, but it's still sort of a weird glitched middle-ground between the run that doesn't sequence break run and the zip run.
I got a 4:16 any% yesterday

That so doesn't resemble the Strider I played as a kid...

THAT WAS FREAKING AWESOME! Congrats!
