My feelings on The Demon Rush
Shadowjacky: There's still a million mirror links for downloading the game, like what Rakuen said. Good thing too, because the official site has exceeded its bandwidth. Tongue

I downloaded this game the moment it came out, but I didn't start playing it until two days ago.

The game is a lot of fun and captures the feel of Streets of Rage very well. It's like playing the third one, but you can actually hurt the enemies!

I'm just gonna write a big long list of notes about the game, because I feel like it.

Overall

The game is obviously based on the Sor3 engine. Everything from hit stun to dashing is based on Sor3 mechanics. I know you can change a lot of this in the options (maybe that's what the collision mechanics option is for, hit stun?), but given how mobile the enemies are, I wouldn't change around the options. I guess you could disable running and rolling, if you really hated yourself.

Speaking of Sor3 engine, the game also has the "special ok" gauge, which is best used for the special to get enemies off of you. In general your dash specials will do more damage than the forward specials.

Dash attacks are SO GOOD in this game. You will be using a lot of dash attack, whether you like it or not. If there's a big weakness to the game it's that dash attacking is too good, and you'll be using it a lot.

Neutral jump kicks are nowhere near as good as in Sor2, they have limited use at best. The only exception is Max, who was lifted straight out of Sor2. Tongue Even against Jets there are usually better options, like forward jump kicks. Speaking of forward jump kicks, they're pretty handy in this game, especially since the game defaults to Sor3-style jumping, which lets you move forward and back as you jump.

Higher difficulties don't add more enemies, they just make enemies faster, give them bigger life bars, and they employ more hit and run tactics. I would have liked a couple more enemies on Mania, oh well.

Unlike Sor2, all bosses that have an invincible wake up, even if they're not the main boss of the stage. :-/ This also includes Electras, but only if they're the Sor2-style ones. Speaking of bosses, any boss ported from Sor2 doesn't keep all of the little ai quirks, and some have new moves. Jet attacks almost without warning when he does the rocket punch. Abedede is now a stupid fight because his running charge is completely invincible, he moves really fast, and even if you roll out of the way of his attacks, some characters have trouble retaliating.

The balance in the game is flat-out awful. Any character or enemy that was added for Remake really sticks out. Especially Rudra, who I'm thinking is just an excuse to fit another ninja in the game. She's definitely not a balanced (or fun) boss fight, since it's nearly impossible to touch her, and she can kill you very easily. The shirtless ninjas are also kind of dumb, because if they're far away, they can just decide to sword slash, and it will out-prioritize anything you can do. If you manage to land a hit on the shirtless ninjas, it might not go through because the ninjas love blocking your hits.

The character balance is also terrible. Roo still sucks, and Shiva is still ridiculously overpowered (doesn't have an infinite anymore though). It's also obvious the programmers didn't adjust Max for an Sor3-style engine, because he does way more damage than any of the other default characters.

The most annoying enemies? NINJAS, I don't know what bomberteam did, but they made the ninjas even more annoying than the ones in Sor2. Half the time you try to attack them, they outprioritize you, and the other half, your attack just whiffs. Sad

Characters

I'm still missing two characters, so I think for now I'll just comment on the default six.

Axel - Based on Sor3 Axel, which means grand upper has no invincibility, does 10 hits, and each hit is about a pixel's worth of damage. I know grand upper was overpowered in Sor2, but come on. :-/ He might the be worst of the default six characters - his mobility isn't great, his damage is underwhelming, and his 3-star dash attack leaves him vulnerable.

Blaze - Her default dash attack isn't that great, but that's easily fixed by simply using the input command for level 2 and 3 dash attacks (until she gets some stars). Her combo damage is a bit low, but aside from that, she's a really solid character - fast movement, decent reach on her punches, good 2 and 3-star dash attack, and good throws (damage and versatility). Also, as a bonus, when she swings a pipe, the very beginning back bit of her animation can hit enemies.

Max - This is Sor2 Max, but with a dash. And yes, he still hits really really hard, and double yes, he is still the best with swords/pipes. Also, his 2-star special is better than his 3-star. I have no idea how you're supposed to hit with the shoulder part of the 3-star and still land the tackle grab. In fact, his tackle grab is an infinite on walls. If you're you fighting the Blaze twins at a place with a wall (right before Mr. X or at the waterfall), then you can just tackle grab repeatedly because they have no wake-up invincibility. Really good based on the fact that he's Max, but with even more mobility and damaging options.

Also, I'm pretty sure you can use the special command to perform special grabs too. I think I performed a piledriver that way.

Skate - In a fight for worst starting character with Axel. His biggest problem is that his punch-range is too short, meaning you have to rely on dash attacks, a lot. His dash attacks are really good, which is what saves him. Even with dash attacks, Skate's damage is really underwhelming. :-/

Adam - Hits hard, has a great dash attack (doesn't matter how many stars, they're all good), and has a nice, long-range jab. The third attack in his combo sometimes doesn't recover fast enough to hit the enemy for a knockdown, but aside from that, he's just a really strong character.

Zan - Really really really really stupid good. Two words: Electro arm (2 or 3-star dash attack). Electro arm has a stupid amount of priority, and better yet, you can move up and down while doing it. Moving up and down might not sound like a big deal, but when most of the bosses in this game barely stay above or below you, using their superior mobility to dance around you, then moving up and down while having a big fatass arm of priority means a lot.  I know Abedede (wrestler), Souther (the sor1 version), and Bear all succumb to repeated electro arms. Oh yeah, his range is long enough to screw with the other way bosses and enemies try to dodge you, by barely staying out of range. I don't play Zan too much simply because I know I'll be abusing way too much dash attack for my own good. Sad

I'll talk about the unlockable characters when I get all of them. I have all but two now. I'll say this much though, Elle is a lot of fun to play, even if she's not the best.

I dislike the fact that Roo's normals deals 1 hit per punch and not 3 mini hits like SoR 3.
He does has a back throw now which is pretty much the most deadly grab based move.

Strangely as Roo, going near to SoR 1 Souther, wiggling Left to Right while Souther wakes up enables him to grab before the boss attacks.

Skate's SOR 2 variant has a killer Blitz attack (0 and 1 star) that deals pretty good damage and hits hard on Jet based bosses.

Abedede is way overpowered, much more threatening than his SoR 2 counterpart. I noticed that his damage output was much better on his 'counter' and flying body slam.

The SoR 3 mobsters (pistol guys) has less invinciblity frames, especially the crouching punches.
SoR 3 Bongo has been slightly nerfed that you can damage him during his forward roll attack,
Robot X has a longer reaction time when you grab him before it counters with his electric shock,

SoR 3 Jet has been buffed because I noticed that most of the time he is considered be 'airborne' so it's only a one hit combo followed by falling down towards the ground and not a simple stun. Zan's Down Air attack was tweaked so that you can no longer do an infinite on this boss.

Mr X's bullets are a bit too strong,

Zan - Really really really really stupid good

He was much better on 2007's Version 4 where all of the weapons had no hp limit and his dash special (energy ball) actually dealt some decent damage.

The Special OK bars are based on Bare Knuckle 3 and not Streets of Rage 3 because the health penalty is much greater.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
Greenalink: I haven't played Sor1 and 2 variants of characters yet.

Does that Roo grab trick work with anyone else? I'd expect it to work with anyone who has decent movement speed.

I agree, Abedede is way too powerful. It's too hard for most characters to hit him reliably, and if he hits you, he takes off a third of your life. It's stupidly easy for Zan to kill him though. :p

Mr. X's bullets? Everything about Mr. X is too strong.

Not familiar with SoR3 properties, though this game is tempting me to replay SoR3. D:

BTW, not familiar with previous versions. I played one version years ago for maybe half an hour, and I haven't really touched the game until now.

Oh some miscellaneous stuff.

The fat guy bosses (the sor1 guys) can be infinited classic style. That's right, jab, pause, jab, pause, etc.

Another infinite that works against way more enemies than it should is grab, do knee combo, flipover twice (jump), do punch combo but stop before knockdown, grab, repeat until done, or bored. Tongue

It pretty much depends on their absolute BS wake up attacks (hello SoR 1/2 bosses).
Edit: The grab tricks works when playing as Max, so I think this tricks works as anyone really.

I've been playing through SoR3 recently and the Signals are absolute dicks, their slide attacks last a tad too long and have long invinciblity frames, not to mention it's deals 30% damage as well >:(. All of those cheap features removed on SoRR.

Also on SoRR, the SoR 2 Robots don't seem to be as annoying as I remembered but Adam's Dash Straight Punch dominates them.

The SoR3 Characters are like 'Handicapped' versions after you try out the SoR 1/2 versions.
