well, some friends of mine wanted me to host some of the speedruns at a torrentsite, but if people dont like it I wont go and do it so I thought I would ask first Smiley
welcome to the machine
SDA doesn't own the speedruns.  If you wanted permission, you'd need to go and ask the runner of whichever run you wanted to mirror.

That said, most people here really don't care (the runs are public anyways), and so long as you properly attribute them and don't cut off the SDA info blurb (statid) at the beginning or anything, I can't see anyone bothering you about it.
Rawr!
okidoki! thx for the info Smiley
...Our little buddy just subscribed to me. How fucked up is that? =|

this guy just showed up, and he's swiped a handful of runs. some examples are two Mario 1 runs, the Melee Adventure run (which has already been mirrored on YT 20000 times), and, again, Stanski's Sonic 2 run. the statids are intact in some, but not in others.

But we can't destroy him!  His power...the scouter says it's OVER 9000!
You got a deletion wish?
TSA's Zelda 1 didn't have an statid (he encoded the run himself) and I believe the Melee Adventure run predates before we started putting them in.  Yeah, the rest do.  Doesn't even mention SDA or the runner even though they're shown in the statid.

So has anyone send him a pm yet? There is this flag button which lets you select something like 'this video infringes my copyrights' (I don't know the exact translation as YT seems determinded to only give me the Dutch interface. Where the hell is that world globe icon?) but I don't know if we have any rights on the runs we make ourselves.
Exoray
Seems like he's only doing it to be able to advertise that link that is in every description.

This means that we will probably see loads more videos as well as not be able to communicate with him (like trying to tell an ad-spammer to stop spamming).

Since it is pretty obvious that his entire channel is an ad-spam, the account would prolly be shut down pretty fast if someone tipped YT off.

He's gone now so....party?

We've got another one; http://www.youtube.com/user/UltimateSpeedRuns

Even calls himself UltimateSpeedruns.  He stole my SH1 run a long with a lot of other runs.  I started posting negative comments in the SH1 video (saying my own run sucked etc...) to see if he'd catch on.  Anyways after a while I pointed out that it was my video and that I never gave him permission upload it.  According to him "Well when you give credit there is no reason to gain permission because it's not being stolen".
Given that he's giving credit, his intentions seem good; he just wants to share runs, not to 'steal' them in the sense of getting the credit himself.

Just politely ask him to take your run down and he'll most likely agree. If he doesn't, then you've got a problem and should ask youtube to have the run removed, but until then be polite and don't attack him.

TBH, I don't really see why you have a problem with what he's doing. You're getting credit, the run is on youtube which it otherwise wouldn't be, and he's not getting anything out of it - he's uploading purely so people can see the runs, and has no spam links or other self-serving crap in the description. He even openly says that the runs he uploads are from speeddemosarchive and tasvideos in his channel description, and provides links to those sites. Of course it's your run and your right to have him take it down, but if I was in your position I wouldn't be angry that he's chosen to upload it.

Edit: Just dropped him this channel comment:
"UltimateSpeedRuns, many runners at SDA are sensitive about having their runs posted on youtube. Primarily I think this is due to people 'stealing' or claiming credit for runs, but many would rather not have their runs posted by a third party on youtube at all, even if credit is given. Can I suggest that you create an account at SDA and in future send a PM to the runner before posting their run? It's their creation and their right to choose where it's shown, after all."

For me it's personal.  The reason I stopped submitting runs to SDA was because of people taking them and putting them on youtube (I'm perfectly capable of uploading a speedrun on there if that's where I want it to be).  People who leech runs are doing it for self serving crap; he's looking to boost his e-popularity on youtube to get tons of subscribers and friends off content he didn't create.  Youtube is for people posting their own unique works; that's all it's for.

I don't like it when people take my runs, even when they give credit, because 1) first and foremost it's a slap to the face to not even ask the person for permission (you took a run from SDA and the runners contact info is in the same fucking link....are e-mails that hard to send) 2) though credit is given in the description I can't even recall how many times I've seen a speedrun put on youtube with comments being directed towards the uploader on how great a video was - a lot of people don't read comments.  3) I don't understand why anyone would upload something that doesn't belong to them...period.  If a video is already online on another site it doesn't need to be bukkaked all over the internet.  4) For myself personally my motivation to do speedruns comes from recognition of having done something (mainly from fellow speedrunners but also from random fans of a particular game); none of the comments in a youtube video that someone else uploads are directed at the runner so there is no feedback and hence no point of having created the video in the first place.

The bottom line is there is no right for someone to take something they didn't create (and something that could have taken months for someone else to create) and upload it without even sending the author a simple fucking message.  It takes hours to upload one of these videos and only minutes to send an e-mail.  Fuck them all.

On a side note this same video is currently on youtube from 2 seperate users...someone didn't even bother to search youtube before posting it or they would have saw it was already there.
The Dork Knight himself.
wow that ultimatespeedruns guy already put the clue run on his page..........he's a quick one
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I would keep talking with this guy but after the last comment he sent me (telling me people take his vids all the time and he's okay with it) he deleted all of my comments on my own fucking video.
However, he has now removed the videos. Most of these people (besides the ones who actually try to claim credit for runs they didn't do) are not evil and don't want to upset anyone.

Posted below is the exchange of messages I've had with him:

Me: "UltimateSpeedRuns, many runners at SDA are sensitive about having their runs posted on youtube. One more thought; it'd be good if you provided a link to the runner's comments on SDA in your video descriptions, rather than just the download page. I'm guessing pretty much all runners would prefer that people see the commentary they've written."

UltimateSpeedRuns: "If my channel had, like thousands of subscribers, none of the runners would not mind, I bet you anything.
I understand if people don't like it if credit is not given, but I'm giving credit to the runner, the download page, and SDA itself, so I really don't see what the problem is.

One reason why I do it is because I know of a lot of people that have slow internet speeds to download, or not able to watch MP4 or AVI (which most of the runs' formats are), or just don't know how the site works, so just easily watching it on Youtube or another streaming site helps out a lot of people.

However you do have a point about the authors' comments, I will start adding that in and adding them to the previous runs."

He didn't seem to be getting the point, so I went on and posted this:

"UltimateSpeedRuns;
I appreciate that you're doing this just to share speedruns with people and with no selfish intent, and I've defended you on the SDA forum. However, ultimately the runner has the right - legally and, in my view, morally - to decide where the runs that they've created are shown.

There are actually some sensible reasons runners object to having their runs uploaded by third parties. Some of the runs you post are already on youtube under the runner's profiles; in such cases, having the run here means many people will see the run here instead of on the video the runner uploaded, which means less people will directly congratulate the runner or be able to ask the runner questions about the run. I'm sure you can see why many runners don't appreciate this. A more respectful way to share the runs in such cases would be to create a playlist on your profile containing the videos the runner themselves uploaded from their profile; I'm pretty sure nobody would have any reason to object to this.

Another reason is that lots of idiots don't read video descriptions and congratulate the uploaders of runs even when the uploader didn't actually do the run. This is upsetting to the runner if he stumbles across it and wants credit.

Finally there's people who just don't want their runs on youtube, full stop. I can't really see why these people feel this way - maybe they think that having the run on youtube means less people will download it in mp4 format, and that this means it is less likely to be rewatched and that the run will be appreciated less due to youtube's poor quality and 10-minute video limit. It also gives stupid youtube trolls a place to abuse the runner.

I personally don't think these factors outweigh the greater exposure a run gets from being on youtube, but that's not the point - it's up to the runner to choose what gets done with their run. So please, in future, PM runners on SDA before uploading their creations, and respect their wishes if they say no, even if there's no good reason for it.

With kind regards,
ExplodingCabbage"

After this he tried to reply on my profile, but lost the message due to the message length limit. He sent me a summarised version, which is below:
"Thank you for the kind words.
There has been an individual that has been upset because I uploaded his Silent Hill run, I have no problem with taking it down (I just did) but he could at least have asked in a positive manner.

To be honest, the reason why I haven't contacted anyone is because what if that person doesn't sign onto SDA for a long time, or doesn't even go there anymore? What if they don't use the email they provided anymore? I wouldn't get permission although I have no problem at all if I ask and they say no.

I'll try the contacting method, but I've only had one complaint out of all the runs so far, so I'll keep uploading, but if the owner sees it and wants it taken down, I will gladly do it with no problems or questions asked."

This negotiation seems to be close to reaching a compromise acceptable to all parties. What I propose is that I now send him a final message laying out the terms on which we are willing for him to continue posting runs. If it were up to me, those terms would be these:

* If a run has already been uploaded onto youtube under the runner's account, he should not upload the run to his own channel without first obtaining the runner's explicit permission (which in those circumstances is unlikely to be provided). He may, however, create playlists on his account containing the runners' videos on their accounts - indeed this is something that we actively encourage him to do, since it brings more exposure to the runs and the runner's profiles.

* If a run is uploaded on youtube by what appears to be a third party, he should message the runner to tell them about this and to ask permission, and not upload the run until such permission is granted. Note that what appears to be a third party may simply be the runner's account under a different name. Also, if the third party is a genuine speedrun thief, he is likely to earn the runner's goodwill by bringing it to their attention, which can only be good for him.

* If a run is not yet on youtube, he may upload it. However, he must message each runner either before or immediately after uploading a speedrun, politely telling them that he intends to upload their run and offering to remove it immediately should the runner object to this. Giving the runner a few days to see the message and reply to it prior to uploading the run would be the preferred method.

* If the run is not on youtube already, he messages the runner and no response is gained from the runner and they appear to have disappeared from SDA and the internets, then he may operate on a presumption that keeping the run on his channel is okay - after all, most runners are happy to get their run out to a wider audience, and having runs in more than one place means they will live longer if SDA someday explodes and nate is kidnapped by aliens. Naturally, if the runner should return and ask that UltimateSpeedRuns takes down the videos, UltimateSpeedRuns must do so.

However, of course I don't want to send him these terms without checking with people here first, since I'm not in a position to represent SDA. They seem perfectly acceptable and fair on everyone to me, but are there any objections from everyone else?

this comment blew my mind. runners would be even more upset in that case.

Imo, this needs to be changed to "However, he must message each runner before uploading a speedrun...." The concept here is about obtaining permission, and that's something you need before you borrow something. I don't know about you, but if someone asks me to borrow something I own irl, I give them permission, and then they say "Oh good cause I already have it," it seems disrespectful. That may not be the general consensus here but it's how I would handle this.

However since both of my runs are on YouTube already (one of which WAS technically "stolen," but in his description he gave me credit right off the bat and explicitly put "I DID NOT DO THIS SPEEDRUN!!" so I let it slide) and I'm personally planning to post any runs hereafter, it doesn't bother me if permission is allowed to be asked immediately after uploading if that's what everyone agrees upon. This may need some kind of loose time frame of a few days or something? If he expects everyone on SDA to be active at least once a day, then after one day with no response he'll be like "welp guess it's fine" (since this is his attitude already) and assume it falls under the aforementioned clause without this whole contract thing accomplishing much of anything. I doubt he's really going to go through any research to see if the runner has really disappeared from SDA.

Other than that the principles seem fine by me.

So when did you ask the game developers if you could upload footage of their game?
As long as they leave the ids intact, I don't have a problem with anyone uploading speedruns to youtube. You don't need permission for that.

I don't know if he is affiliated with SDA in any way, because he states in his member description "I upload videos from the Speed Demos Archive".  But there is also a youtube member called "speeddemosarchiveSDA", I discovered him because he uploaded my SB64 run.  But again, he gave proper credit and clearly puts that the runs are from this site, fast, verified, etc.
