I bought the gamecube version of the game today. There seems to be no difference with PS2 in loading times, but I will test. However, the clip I use for great wall early doesn't work on GC. You could still get Atun eyes and jump OOB into the water, but that's a bit slower. I'll test if capture beetle through flat walls works too.

I found a grail skip. No curse stones are required to beat this game now <3
I'll let this video talk:

As far as an explanation goes...hugging the pillar makes you climb a steeper grade, increasing your speed enough to clip into the wall where the ground slants up against it. You go left to avoid getting stuck in map loading once you fall, and you turn the camera once you get stuck to load the boss room. From there, it's pretty easy to understand. Hug the wall until you get to those rock, then platform as shown Cheesy

Edit: Tested and this does not eliminate the need for the other crowns. You absolutely must get all the crowns to beat the game. Still a great break. Next, we've gotta work on Uruk and Abydos -- after that I think the game is going to be pretty well maxed...
Hear you talking about this all the time, really looking forward to this!

Thanks, both of you. It may be a long time in coming: I have a lot of routing stuff to plan since the game is getting rather open-ended. I timed the PS2's loading screens vs. Gamecube in the Cursed Palace entrance. Gamecube gains roughly 4-5 seconds on this loading screen, and I am assuming it will follow suit on others. I'll perform more tests to make sure. Gamecube will probably end up being my console of choice for this run, from the looks of it. All the breaks work fine, except for Great Wall II Early, which only works in a gimped form involving Atun eyes that's been up on Youtube for a while. It's not a big deal; collecting the eyes is about 10 or 15 seconds.

Edit: Timed all the shit for the scale and nonscale routes. No scales + skipping the Anubis dialogue is almost definitely faster, since you can use the boat to go to Heliopolis Point for Uruk Islands. I think the best crown order is Helian, Set, Uruk, Abydos.

I've started recording test segments, which I hope will answer some routing questions and get strats lined up. It's not a speedrun, and as such it's not terribly optimized, but if you see any strats I've missed, please point them out. I may redo this one, but I'll dump it for now and edit if I find better strats.

Found a slightly easier/faster version of Pharaoh Spider Early that can be done sans Wings of Ibis. As usual, you get them regardless, but it's still cool and I'm going to have to test a bit.

I've been busy with school/family shit, but tomorrow is my last day and I should have lots of time to devote to this game now. Expect more test segs in the near future!

Actually found out something that's going to require testing. You can take your swimming state through black loading screens. When I was poking around on a Sphinx fansite, I noticed that people had been able to refight the first boss with AR by OOB swimming in the courtyard in Abydos and going through the loading zone into the palace and hitting the loading zone under the statue. This basically means that if we are able to find an OOB in the council chambers or the courtyard we have skipped the medicine bag. So if anyone with the game is reading this, look for an OOB there! It'd save lots of time.
Waiting hurts my soul...
I remember trying this game out for a bit, and realized I might have stumbled on a small time saver after watching your video two posts above. I got by the second eye without the rock (didn't see it, so I spent some time just trying to get by). I found a certain spot behind it where I could jump up the slope kind of (to the right of the gate I think), and the eye would lose sight of me long enough to drop the gate and for me to jump through it. I'll try to get a video of it tomorrow. Might not save all too much time since it really doesn't take too long to get that rock, but maybe it'll give you ideas for other places.

Any time saved is good -- I think I've done it once before, but if you want to look into it, all the better. Also, if you've ever clipped anywhere in the game, useless or not, I'd like to know about that. All the clips I've seen seem to use entirely different methods and knowing more might help in skipping the pass card/herb bag. I found a clip into one of the pillars in the water in the courtyard. You use the left  part of fence, between the last/second-to-last posts where the fence meets the wall. Basically, angle a bit off perpindicular and do a short hop so you fall onto the fence. If you do it right, you'll clip through and be inside the pillar. To my knowledge this is completely useless, as the floor extends under the pillar, but I could be wrong. Putting this here for documentation anyway.

Edit: I figured out the eye trick. It's just jumping against the wall on the right side of the gate. If you still want to video it, documentation's good though. ^^
Also, I'll still make test segs, but for now I think I'm just going to practice what I know and get a rough route going.

Test segment 2

Just to reiterate, not intended to be a run -- just a guide.
I'm not terribly happy with this, but it'll serve for now. Check the description on YT for some explanations -- if any of you know better bug strats, tell me, because I've had a lot of issues with them. As I mentioned on YT I'll probably come back and improve this, since it's pretty sloppy -- I think there are better strats to be had.

I've given up on trying to skip the medicine bag for the time being. The Council Chambers area is pretty much airtight from what I've seen, besides that pillar clip. I'm by no means satisfied with the current amount of sequence breaks in the game, though, and I'm going to keep looking for things until I am.

New, somewhat less shitty test seg. I found a few weird little text skips in Luxor that are gonna be good for seg'd so I'll cut the ones that didn't make it into a separate video.

I've calculated and I'm going to need exactly 20 scarabs from Mysterious Location to be able to get the frog in a timely manner.

Thanks a ton. If you want to come back to the game, any help or whatever would be very much appreciated Cheesy

All the potential breaks that aren't happening because I can't get OOB are driving me crazy. I'm going to purchase an AR Max in the next few weeks and see if I can figure out where the different map sections in Luxor etc. are to know if we have any chance of OOBing to them, and see if the Abydos amulet is actually behind that cutscene trigger near the beginning of the game...

Should get a route seg 4 cranked out by the end of the week, barring apocalypse or loss of sanity or something. My Abydos route is going to be a little subpar due to me derping and not getting 2 scarabs in Uruk, but I think I'm going to go ahead for now since I really don't feel like redoing the same shit over again.

Medicine bag skip works!!!! You can jump OOB using the railing clip. This is very hard to do, and not confirmed for GC yet either...

It appears to have some measure of consistency on PS2, but on Gamecube I straight-up cannot do it. I've only been able to even clip once. I think, at least for SS, it's going to be worth it to switch consoles.

Also, there are a few errors I made routing that I'm gonna correct right here. Any% DOES get crocodile scales, you activate the boat on the way to Uruk and the crown order is Uruk, Abydos, Heliopolis, Set.

Sword diving:

...Here we go. This works almost everywhere in Heliopolis, meaning we can surface inside Cursed Palace's wall and go wherever the hell, including Lost Temple of Heliopolis via South Beach OOB off an island... Useful for 100%, I suppose? It also provides a way to skip getting Atun eyes on GC. As it stands, there's no other real use, but it does work in electrified water, though as soon as you stop swinging you get electrocuted. If we can get into one of the holes in the terrain that exist in the Abydos canal, then that's one step towards pass card skip. Getting this to clip you in Great Wall III would save time too. It's not dependent on water or anything, just how stationary falling makes you clip through curved, sloping walls if you slide down them with enough speed.
Suss
Well, work on this stopped for a bit when I discovered just how much of a pain routing this is going to be. However, I'm back on it now and am going to drag myself through all the timing to properly figure out the crown order etc.

Found a couple glitches as well, both useless :[ (so far anyway)

Found this, which saves a second or two in seg'd and if Wings of Ibis ever become skippable makes GC viable for seg'd low%... Or something >_>

Finished timing the glyph stuff. It's fastest to substitute the courtyard glyph for the second one in Great Wall III, which takes roughly 2:00 to get. If it was possible to skip ice darts with the current route by doing the second glyph, skipping the third, and using the torches to get onto the statues (you can't get on the middle one anyway) it would still be roughly the same as just skipping glyph 2 and getting the darts, and a lot harder for SS.

More weird useless shit:

Oh my god I'm an idiot. Guess that's the end of Uruk Temple...

New clipping method, kind of:

Edit: Skipping Uruk Temple is slower than doing it, apparently. Also found this:

Here's the tentative route, finally... I forgot some stuff in my notes above, so the monster numbers are different. Route updated with equips and earth room route after several more attempts.

--------------------------------------------------

Uruk: Clear the area. Get 2 scarabs.

Luxor Palace: Clear the area.

Luxor Pyramid: Break every pot for 18 scarabs. Equip shield of osiris to R1 immediately after getting it.

Abydos 1: Left to pearl 1. Left and forward to pearl 2 and 12 scarabs. Suicide. Forward to 10 scarabs. Hit the lantern for 2 more. Jump in the well. Get 7 scarabs, pearl 3, gate key. Go out. Get the 10 scarab pot and lantern again, and hit the lantern above the trader for 2 more scarabs. Turn in your pearls. Enter the door and get the 10 scarab pot behind the house with the door you just went through. Buy a small frog and go to the museum. Hit the 10 scarab pot near the well again. Turn in your small frog. Go out and hit the same pot, zipline up to the top walkway, break the pot near the boatman for 10 scarabs. Go directly to the boatman.
Heliopolis 1: Perform Eagle Stone Skip.

South Beach 1: Do the swimming minigame for croc scales. Dive and fastswim through the water and go in. Do mummy section 1 for Wings of Ibis. Earth room route: pull stones into place, biased toward the switch side. Pull statues, activate pressure plate. Fire from the first gas chamber.  Light the second gas chamber. Burn wood, pull rotation lever. Relight from first chamber. Light third chamber.

South Beach 2: Fastswim across, take the boat to Cursed Palace.

Heliopolis 2: Enter Anubis Tower, get the blowpipe, leave. Get 120 scarabs from the ledge on the side of Cursed Palace. Enter Cursed Palace. Do Pharaoh spider early, and the subsequent boss fight and mummy section.

SB3: Fastswim across and go out the warp to Heliopolis proper.

H3: Sword dive and swim into Bedouin Outpost trigger.

Bedouin Outpost: Use atun discs whenever possible. Buy 20 beetles. Go to Heliopolis Point.

Heliopolis Point 1: Use Atun discs whenever possible. Activate the boat but do not take it. Go into Heliopolis and into Great Wall II.

Great Wall II: Clear mostly as normal. Get ~20 scarabs. Do the fight skip.

Uruk Canyon: Equip capture beetles to L1, Blowpipe to triangle. Capture 3 slim burbles and set them to R1. Left passage first. Capture 4 fire armadillos and hit the stone for some more beetles. Do the puzzle skip and go out. Capture 3 more burbles. Equip fire armadillos to triangle. Burn the barricade and do the middle passage. If you didn't get beetles before, hit this stone. Equip shield of osiris to R1, slim burbles to triangle. Capture 3 more burbles and do the right passage. Capture 2 burbles, trigger Ketta CS.

SB4: Take the boat to Abydos.

A2: Show your ID to the guard in the passageway on the side of the bay nearest the boat. Go to the courtyard.

Courtyard: Do medicine bag skip. Kill Apocalypse.

SB5: Take the boat to Heliopolis Point.

HP2: Do Great Wall III early.

Great Wall III: Equip blowpipe to triangle. Do GWIII skip. Equip burbles to L1.

Uruk Islands: Do natural route here. Clear Uruk Temple, get key, kill Geb Queen.

SB6: Don't leave Imhotep's temple. Use the Anubis amulet.

Anubis Tower: Turn in your crowns, armadillos, etc.

Uruk: Kill Set.

Minor edits made to reflect the fact that getting croc scales saves time.

Streamed my first completed attempt at http://www.twitch.tv/zlamp today. I'm estimating it's in the 2:56:xx range (I forgot to turn on Wsplit). I think sub 2:40 will be a good goal time.

On second thought, I've actually decided to keep working on this run. It's a good game and I'm missing it.

Found a semi-consistent strat for Pharaoh Spider. Immediately hold down right and then shift into down and keep running. He should immediately drop rocks. After you get the first two throws, lead him to the area with the large skull filling the wall. Hide behind the large rock on the left side of it until he gets to you and (hopefully) gets confused and goes the other way. Immediately run out and run far away from him and stay in an open area and he should drop rocks again. Do the throws, lead him to the skull once more, and you should have him.

Also never posted this:

This is the closest I've gotten to pass card skip. The head is waaay too far away to jump over the gate from, but if we find something that only allows us to keep height instead of gain height this would be the spot it could be put to use.

Making one more post since I need input.

I've been running the game on the PS2 version. PS2 has slower loading times, but Medicine Bag Skip is, while still horribly difficult and inconsistent, much easier on it compared to Gamecube. On Gamecube it is so difficult, in fact, that at least with current strategies I don't believe I can use it in a single segment. I would very much like to include this trick in my run, since it cuts a tedious mummy section and looks quite impressive. However, there is a chance that even with the time saved by Medicine Bag Skip, GC would still be faster, simply due to loading.

As I said, I'd prefer to use PS2 regardless of this, as the run would be more interesting to watch and more fun to perform. Would all of you be okay with this as verifiers, seeing as this is a game that does not (at least currently) have a lot of competition?
I'm very much okay with it given the added entertainment value, and I will verify for sure when the time comes.

Loading times are nearly universally not counted when comparing runs (even if they do affect the time the run gets labelled with), so if the trick is easier on the PS2 version at worst it'll be considered a separate category.

Alright, awesome. Onward march with PS2 then.

I'll try to work on Pass Card Skip some more tonight...

The gates are very very well-protected and you can't fool the spawn points by going under them. Also, if by some miracle you were able to kill all the exo-piranhas in the canal, this wouldn't trick the guard into opening the gate, or even giving you the Heliopolis Amulet. It appears that the possible ways this could happen are:

-Height gain to get on top of either the bird statue by the right gate, assuming you can jump far enough forward after getting over the wall; or over the left gate itself.
-Some way to glitch Ketta and her husband into giving you the pass card early
-Ketta's sprite being stored OOB?? (probably not happening but I haven't quite disproved it yet so w/e)
-Getting OOB in the well, assuming all inside areas are connected. If you got OOB, you could hit water, surface, swim out into the blackness, load Tefnut's Target Tavern and leave via the door or the loading zone attached to it.

Also probably making a little glitch comp video. I've found a lot of small useless things that I think need documenting, both for completeness and just in case I've overlooked something.

Just gonna leave this here...

Got a 2:43:35 today. This can come down WAY lower than I thought. The run had copious mistakes and a disc loading error at one point in GWII. Sub 2:40 is looking like my goal time atm, but we'll see...

A couple notes, also... You should be able to do a double jump + pound past the monkeybars with the spider in Uruk Temple. This will save a couple seconds. Second, when you drop with sword diving you are really and truly in a standing state. You can do a full double jump whenever you want during a sword dive. Maybe useful for pass card skip?
I've been working pretty much daily on Pass Card skip and tested about everything I can, but no dice so far. Not a bad seam or speed increase in sight. I feel like I'm missing something huge and if anyone reading this thread has the game I encourage them to try as well...

I should be back doing runs within a couple weeks once school calms down.

Came close to beating my 2:43 if medicine bag skip had cooperated. Made a small change to the Abydos scarab route upon realizing that you get 10 scarabs consistently from the pot on the dock where you leave. Re-evaluating Lost Temple vs. Uruk Temple, but the problem of the sword dive out being horribly inconsistent persists. If anyone wants to help with this game, finding a setup for that would be one very helpful thing they could do. I've tried and been completely unable.

Tech #2: Swim Through 90 Degree Corners

This takes the teeth out of Medicine Bag Skip and makes GC version viable. The way the setup works is very simple: Jump while at rest on the surface of the water, angled the way you want to be for the clip. When Sphinx stabilizes underwater and begins rising, do two or three swim strokes and you will clip if your angle is correct.

It also lets me skip all of Great Wall III and the courtyard glyph.

Upon further examination, swimming through 90 degree angles is really just an easy/consistent version of a more universal glitch - swim through vertical walls. If you align yourself in such a way that the movement produced by each swim stroke is completely perpendicular in direction to the wall (i.e. you are not moving left, right, up or down on the wall at all with each stroke) after a few strokes you should clip through the wall. It's a little bewildering that this has eluded me for almost a year -- it seems as if it should have been one of my first discoveries.

The route's updated to reflect the new shit. Tefnut's Target Tavern is on its own map, sadly, so there's no hope of loading it from OOB in the well room. Pass card skip is looking more and more elusive. What with the number of things this game seems to be hiding I'm not going to rule it out, but the only way to do it would be to get past the gate directly, either by clipping or by height gain. However, the GWIII skip does remove a barrier to double jump skip, another trick that seemed very far away. There are currently two points in the route that require double jump to progress:

-The first room of Great Wall II: There are two solutions here. The first would be some feat of platforming or a height gain trick to get onto the platform at the beginning. After this I believe double jump is not needed again. The other solution would be pass card skip, as it eliminates the need to go to GWII at all.

-The Ka post glyph in Uruk Islands: There are also multiple solutions for this. The B glyph (The bird-shaped glyph key called glyph key b in the game's AR codes) for the Ka post can come either from Uruk Temple or Lost Temple of Heliopolis. Uruk Temple requires double jump at the lattice with the spider on the way to the first symbol and, I believe, at the pull-out platforms in the second symbol's room. Lost Temple requires double jump at the first block that slides out after the skeleton puzzle in the right passage, and at the block to get to the top level in the left. These are the only two appearances of the B glyph in Sphinx's portion of the game to my knowledge. If there are more I would be delighted to know of them.

I'll try to confirm where double jump is and is not needed tonight -- I may be mistaken on some of these.

Right, new PB! 2:38:18. It's pretty horrible, honestly... I need to do some serious testing in the final Uruk section before Set -- it wasted me several minutes this time. I may try to do a catch-all testing playthrough later this week. Sub 2:30 is looking very very possible, especially if I can get used to GC controls. There seems to be a rather annoying difference on GC involving the slim burbles -- they have a very marked tendency to explode when they come in contact with any kind of wall. This wastes a good 15 seconds at the large rock in the starting area when the third burble needed for the ropes explodes on the way out of its burrow because of my positioning.
