I've been looking for my copy of Star Fox Adventures to see if its worth speedrunning, but was never able to find it.  So I thought, why not dust off a copy of a similar game that's way more fun?

Has anyone heard of this game?  It's similar to BG&E, in that its a great sleeper title, except in this case, even fewer people have heard of/played it.  Gameplay is very similar to OoT/SFA, although I'm not sure if this game or SFA came out first.  Either way, it's a hell of a lot better than SFA, at least from my perspective.

The basic story of the game is a cursed mummy and warrior (two seperate characters) are trying to take down some evil king, except they're doing it without any real knowledge that the other person is trying to do so as well.  Through the adventure they end up helping each other out without even realizing it.  For example, one character might collect an item they have no use for, but the other character comes along it and it becomes a great help.  There's no switching between characters, a la Resident Evil 0, but rather once a chapter is completed, it will often switch to the other character permanently until the chapter is complete, and go back-and-forth.

Sphinx (the name of the warrior) is the equivalent to Link in this case.  Runs around towns, goes through a few dungeons/bosses here and there, etc.  The Mummy... not so much.  The mummy is 100% puzzle platform, and actually can't die.  It sounds weird, but it works extremely well.

For a game developed by THQ, it's actually a very good game.  I'm looking into speedrunning this game, and I think if none of you have heard of/played it before, you should give it a look.  Unfortunately, due to its popularity (or lackthereof), I don't know of any breaks.  I just started a runthrough, and I'm rusty since I haven't played in about 3 years or more.  It does have an in-game timer, and cutscenes can't be skipped.

Comments/suggestions?
Thread title:
Started playing through the game again today, and its almost a completely new game to me.  Not even up to the first boss yet, although the first boss doesn't occur till about 1/2 way through the game.  Will be a good and fun run.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Eh, to not completely leave you out here posting by your lonesome, I can vaguely remember this game. I remember a preview of it on a disc of PlayStation Underground years ago.

I can't provide anything meaningful, as I've never played the game. But good luck nonetheless. Wink
Just finshed the refreshment of the game.  My next runthrough is route planning.  Things that this run helped determine:

- I need a bare minimum 95 scarabs for early in the game... and a POSSIBLE additional 30 scarabs for two trips later in the game.  However, those two trips may not be necessary, as not playing this game in about 3 years made me got lost in the desert.

- There is no reason to catch any animals (which I wasn't sure about) aside from the obvious slurms and fire armadillos.

- There's no reason to return any of the stolen jewels you get from Tut's part of the game.  They only return one gold ankh a piece, and by the time you can finally convert them later in the game, that much more life is 100% unneccesary.

Things I have yet to determine:
- Like I said before, whether I'm going to need any scarabs beyond the opening 95 for trips that might cut travel time.

-There's a challenge that takes about a minute that gives you increased underwater swim speed.  You only need to go in water a few times during the game, but they tend to be somewhat long trips.  I'm pretty sure the one minute challenge will pay off by the end of the game from travelling, but I'm not 100% positive.

-If the south beach key will pay off.  It's not required, but it connects two areas that would take longer to get around otherwise.  Like I said before, my unfamiliarity with the game led me to getting lost in the desert a ton, so I don't know from just thinking the routes I need to take, and if that shortcut will be needed.  The key takes more time to get than it should... the animation from the storekeeper talking to you and opening the damn door is debatable.  10 onyx scarabs to enter, and then 10 more to buy the key.  Onyx scarabs won't be a problem, it'll probably take 10-15 seconds to get them from the Tut quests.  We'll see.

- Using the "Eyes of _____".  Chances are with my route, I won't need to activate any statues, but iuf I get two eyes early, the one pad by the cursed palace could pay off as you go by it quite a few times.  That's the onyl one I can really see is worthwhile activating.

My final save was at 7:58:xx, although I don't know if that counted after the final boss or not (I'm pretty sure it didn't, but some confirmation would be great).  The final blow came about 8 minutes after, putting it at ~8:05... which means literally nothing because I completely forgot about 85% of the game.

I'm taking a very uneducated guess that the game will take around 5-6 hours, although with how clueless I was, it could be less.

Also I'm estimating 20-25 segments.

Complete side note, if you guys remember a day r two ago I said I hadn't even reached the first boss, despite about 4-5 hours I put into the game, they just really didn't balance stuff out that well.  There's a ton of work with no bosses, then you face all three extremely late in the game and close to each other.

And uh, I think that's it.  If anyone is remotely familiar with this game (not a high chance), help would be greatly appreciated!
I just finished a chunk of my route planning.  I played up to when you take control of the Mummy in his prison cell for the first time, with a game timer of 1:06:20.  I posted individual segments at the top, although really just to make sure I'm crushing them when I go through my actual run, as currently I'm still making a few wrong turns, taking extra time to figure faster things out, etc.  By this same point next time, it should be sub 1-hour.

I also realize how boring parts of this game are going to be, with large amounts fo text that you CAN'T speed up or go by quickly.  Especially these first 4 segments.  Yick.  I'm not sure ont he rules of SDA, but I'm assuming all cutscenes add to the time (which the game counts towards the time), which probably comes close to doubling the actual gameplay time.
100% runs=great to watch
I remember back when a good amount of people thought this game and I-Ninja were right solid...then they both kinda just got lost in the haze.

Good luck with pulling this off!
Just beat the first boss, and got the 2nd set of Curse Stones from Anubis.  Saved outside the cursed palace with a time of 3:09:21.  I had a horrendous boss battle as well... most of my segments are horrible anyway, but the boss battle was REALLY bad.  If I'm not mistaking, I'm more than halfway done with the game... way more.  So we'll see what my target time should be pretty soon.

I may divide the 3 pillars room up into 2 segments.  One segment would be exclusively for the 4 switches room, while the other segment would be for the remaining two rooms.  Between the fighting room, and the LONG 4 switches room, there's a lot of potential for error, and those rooms are tedious and boring.  I really don't feel like doing both of them all over again if I mess up.

I'm also chaning the recovering of the glyph key to right before I enter the Mummy Cell, as opposed to after I get the medicine bag.  It makes sense since it's such a short segment, and messing up AFTER the medicine bag, the longest segment in the game, would be disastrous.
Finished the route planning, almost.  Any changes to make I can do quickly my next runthrough.

This current runthrough was 22 segments, but it's going to bumped up to 25.  The segment dividing looks kind of ugly, in that most segments won't be the "Complete this temple, then save".  You can only save at these weird totem statues that are not abundant by any means, and often you'll see me save in the middle of some quest, just because I have no other choice... which is why some of my segments are going to be slightly altered, due tot he fact that I wasn't sure how to approach them on this go-through.

Oh, before I continue, the last save before the boss was listed as 5:10:29, and using a clock, the final blow took almost exactly 6m30s, putting the final time right around 5h17m.  I can take an estimated 2-3 minutes (sometimes a TON more) off almost every single segment, so my next runthrough should be around 4h30m.  Granted, my original estimate was 5-6 hours on a perfect speedrun, and it obvious now it might be closer to the low 4-hour range, possibly sub, but I don't want to get ahead of myself quite yet.

Notes of Importance:

+The 3 "Simon"-esque patterns are always the same, so you don't need to view the patterns before inputting them.

+17-18 slurms are required for the entire game.  Originally I thought I could use them more often to take down enemies more quickly, but as it turns out, they don't do that much damage, and the time it woudl tkae to capture them, then use them, it's clearly slower.

+8 fire armadillos are required for the duration of the game.  These will all be captured early in the game, as later they are further away from your targets.

+The south Beach key that I was talking about earlier is completely unneccessary.  There goes getting ANY onyx scarabs in the Mummy levels, and that cuts off the whole damn buying sequence animation.

+There's a few segments where I make minor changes, such as chanign the saving period to before or after I use a certian item.

However, there's one part I'm REALLY having trouble with.  It runs from the completion of the Challenge Temple the dog gives to you, up until the 5th Mummy Level.  I start off on an island in the sky, and I need to warp to another one, grab a key, then use it to open the Ceb queens palace.  There's a trick I have to get teh key slightly faster, but it's incredibly difficult.  On the other hand, Ceb Queen is easy difficulty-wise, but the insects may or may not hit her fast enough for me, which I BELIEVE is not in my control and somewhat random.  I'm debating whether I should waste time after the key to warp back to the save island and use multiple segments, or if that additional time would cost me later.

Of course, it seems like I'm ranting to myself since no one can give me any help on this.  Army of one.
Well with TP officially being hit with a wrecking ball, this will probably get next to no attention, but here goes:

Just finished my slightly speedier playthrough.  My last time was 5:17:00, and I just came in with a 4:43:09 Final Blow.  Essentially, a 35 minute improvement.  I slightly miscalculated how much faster I would be.  This game won't come close to being sub 4, but I believe sub 4:30 is when I will submit this game.  I improved in every segment but two: one segment I was 7 seconds slower on (viewing the 5 obelisks, 7m20s), and one segment I was 1 minute slower on, but that was only due to the fact that I added an extra quest from later in the game into that segment, so in reality, it wasn't slower.  Also, the game officially is divided into a nice round number of 25 segments.

The biggest part I can improve on is the Geb (Ceb?  The text is ambiguous) Queen.  The boss herself is easy to beat, it's a matter of making it faster.  I can't seem to nail down a strategy to get those damn bugs to hit her.  Walking far away from her TENDS to get her to spin less, but the further away you are, the harder it is to lure the bugs to her when she's still.

Also, I would appreciate if anyone who has played this game would post here, just so I know what the chances of it getting verified are.  Thanks!

I'll update the segments in the first post later.
I'm currently working on a way to skip the Shield of Osiris, as it's only required once in the entire game, in the very temple you obtain it in.  I'm trying to work on the timing on the Eye of Ra laser.  First, I've found the exact trigger point for when it fires.  Second, it can't fire past the tirgger point.  If you just touch the trigger point, then run back, it will make the fire sound, but not fire.  If you wait a split second before heading back, you'll see it fire at you, but hit an invisible wall right in front of you.  My idea is that if you wait long enough to trigger it, then run back, and have it fire, you might be able to run past it.  What's unclear is if there's a reloading time for it (as being hit by it once warps you back to the entrance of the room, so there's no way to tell), and if there's a limit as to how CLOSE to it it can fire.

For those of you wondering, the only item I have at that point in the game is my sword, and the area I need to get through is a VERY narrow hallway.  There's no items to pick up and move anywhere, so it's really a matter of seeing if its possible to trick the EoR.
After lots of experimentation, it appears that, for now, that stupid Shield can't be skipped.  The damn eye of ra actually only has about a .1 of a second delay between firing, and it follows you.  That means it firing at AND following you (quickly, I might add) for about 2.4 of every 2.5 seconds.  Not happening.

I did manage to get sub-1hour up to the 1st Mummy Quest, and while I'm losing time on segments, it's only averaging out to about 15 seconds per 8-10 minute segment.  So sub 4:30 is the ultimate goal of this, I'm doing one more runthrough of the game, and then recording comes into play.  My segments are almost perfect, so it's really close.
My latest runthrough:

Just got past the skeleton bird boss.  Unfortuanately, I'm only about 3 minutes ahead of my last pace, and everything is damn near optimized.  Now with the discovery that SDA might time it not by the final blow, but by the text ending I have to scroll through, this game, without some sort of break, won't quite cut the 4h30m mark.  Sad
Found a small "break" in the game that's going to save some time.

After you bring the Heliopolis lady her three dogs, you become the Mummy, and grab the key for the little creature.  If you release him from his cage, then save, then quit, when you load the game back up, the door will already be open, and you save the 1+ minute it takes for him to hit the three switches for you.  Oddly enough, there is an additional key sitting in its original place, but it has no purpose.
Seems like this thread is dead; I suppose the run is stopped?

I'm playing back through this and thinking about running it. A few initial thoughts after playing through to Heliopolis.

-Using the sword attack (pre wings of ibis) gives you some extra height/distance to your jump, which allows for a few small skips.
-If you grab and then release any object as the mummy, (or tut) you can for an instant jump off of the 'grab box'. Its a weird bug and the only use I've found so far is that its slightly faster to use this to get behind the golden bird statues in the palace, letting you get the amulets a tiny bit faster.

If my PS3 gets fixed, this run will fall backwards in the queue, but otherwise I should be able to plan/record this sometime, it is a pretty simple game and there aren't many chances to glitch or so on.
I have a couple breaks you all should probably be aware of, but due to my lack of experience with the game I'm not entirely sure how viable they are... Links below and such.

F*ckin' sanity effects...
I am turning over in my mind the thought of running this game (probably at least a couple dozen segments if I were to go through with it).  I haven't played it in a couple years, and have only played it twice, but I think it's awesome and should have a place on the site.  I'm a little uncomfortable thinking of all the glitches I'll have to learn (the only run I've ever done had basically no useful glitches I could discover), and I think even if I were to start tonight, it would take literally years to get this run completed (learning the game, route-planning, practice...)...but I'm thinking about it.  Just thinking about it...

If anyone knows of any glitches besides the ones typed out or youtubed above, please let me/us know!  Also if you'd have any interest in seeing it.
I recently found an OOB in the Bedouin Outpost gate area that leads to OOB water, enabling airswimming. This might mean skipping the mummy's first appearance entirely by meeting Anubis early, but for one thing: You have a drowning timer as long as you are in the swimming state. I will record a video later today showing the OOB spot, and maybe further progress can be made.

As to additional useful glitches, I know of none as of right now.
I've managed to circumvent pretty much every issue I had with the airswim. As long as the warp is still there with the door closed, I think it is safe to say we have Anubis Early.

I've encountered a very worrying problem. Anubis seems to duslike having his dialogue chopped up and skipped, and refuses to say anything to me when I get the Crown of Uruk. Maybe the Abydosian Crown would fix it...?
F*ckin' sanity effects...
Keep us informed; this is awesome work you're doing.  Maybe you're the guy for the job, really...but yeah, as I do not really have much time right now, I'd love to hear of any progress you make.
I don't know the game a great deal, so I might be overlooking something as far as triggers to get Anubis's dialogue working. Once I have a little more time I will test getting the Crown of Abydos; it's possible that could fix it. Feel free to test on your own time -- I am happy to provide explanations for any of my tricks if need be.
Another small note: I noticed that there is a second or two when you are falling before you enter the falling animation. I tried pulling out the blowpipe during this. The falling animation canceled it, and when I landed my item menu was replaced by the dart menu. I was able to equip the bouncing dart icon to R1/L1 in this state, but it appears to have no effects. I suspect if there is anything else in the game that brings up a new item menu like this, it may have similar effects. Another thing I am wondering is if it might be possible to somehow overwrite the dart icon with something else, OOT style. I'll do more extensive testing on this as I have time.

Finally tested the crowns stuff. Turning in the Abydosian Crown lets you turn in the Crown of Uruk. You can get them in any order. This means both the breaks are useful.

Wings of Ibis "Skip" can't be used to skip them entirely, mainly because of the requirements for getting the Abydosian Crown. Talking to Anubis actually screws you out of ever getting them, rendering the game unwinnable. However, the OOB swimming spot can be used to get into the Great Wall without going around through the south desert as per my first break or doing the mummy section for the statue.  This is the third and definitely the fastest way to get into the Great Wall without doing the mummy section.

List of useful skips I can think of that are left to find:
1. Getting past the gates in Abydos. (May skip Wings of Ibis if the Uruk trial thing doesn't require it -- I can't remember whether it does)
2. Going OOB in the Abydosian Palace and falling into the trigger under the statue? (would skip my least favorite mummy section)
3. Going OOB in the cursed palace and falling into the passage to Pharaoh Spider (Skip a mummy section)
4. Getting to the Geb Queen without unlocking the Ka post (probably not happening, but would skip a big part of Uruk Islands and combined with 1 would pretty much ensure skipping Wings)

Edit: Apparently there's some kind of title screen glitch that allows you to select a file just as you hit back. No use so far, but it freezes if you do Load Game again...

Great Wall Early:

A small side effect:

Another thing of note. When you jump out of bounds and adjust the camera in certain situations, it appears to change what area is loaded, sometimes putting you in a completely unloaded area with an invisible character. Sadly, you can't move in this state at all. If we can find some way to move, then it might allow us to skip the Abydos gates...

I think my description for this video about covers it. Seriously, if you hide all your strats for your run after the fact... You're shit.

Edit: Few new things and I don't want to be annoying and bump.

Capture Beetle through flat walls

This will hopefully let us sneak a Slim Burble through the gate to blow up one of the obelisks sans puzzle when rescuing the man's wife in Uruk Canyon.

Zombie Sphinx

Happens if you drown with low health as you enter a loading zone, methinks. No use so far, but I've barely had time to test.

Once I get time I'll confirm the puzzle skip and test some more with the health glitch. I'll probably upload a miscellaneous glitch video to cover smaller stuff, in addition.

Think last post got big enough a new one's warranted. Two new skips, pretty easy to understand them both:

Thanks to Surreal for pointing me towards the last one with a video he showed me a while back.
