And to mario mario, how about you read the whole thread, or at least the current discussion, instead of just responding to the ridiculously outdated first post?

why don't you quit assuming i have millions of hours to spend reading every single post ever made on every forum in the entire world and learn to be nicer and not such an ass all the time
I'm addicted to games
Yeah, sure millions of hours is needed.
You're the one being an ass.

The topic is over six months old, chances are the original topic has already been covered in detail and it wouldn't hurt to just breeze the last page to see what everyone's currently talking about.  Apparently you're able to check the last page to see people responding to your post...

The topic summed up from page 8
"For everyone new to this resurrected topic, here's the basic gist. We talked about how cool it would be to see runs on tv. Then Cinematech aired some runs, but didn't give credit to anyone, not the runners or the website. So now we're pissed at them for doing that. "
Now we're talking about copyrights.

Next topic of conversation: how to make the curtains match the coasters. Tongue
Visit my profile to see my runs!
Yeah, I believe the Intellectual Property point is pretty cogent.

Your best bet is proving to developers that these speedruns are a form of respect [were any to dispute said copyright legalities]..  Bungie actually made modifications to Halo 2 so that RedvsBlue could move the heads around without aiming the gun; at least, this is what Rooster Teeth claims...

Though, were there to be hordes of particularly anal developers, out there, that detested our use of their titles, then I would unfortunately doubt that we would have the resources or favor to fend them off.

In any case, if G4 claims that SDA is culpable for this entire situation, then they should consider that, even if SDA is invalid in claiming the videos are exclusive properties of the site, then they were, themselves, displaying unauthorized videos of people running through unauthroized properties of game developers; their argument only further stipulated their own, unjust actions.

I still think we should cordially apologize for so relentlessly attacking them.  Granted, what they did was asinine and inconsiderate, but I'm sure we could convince them that they could regain the viewers attracted to the runs by allowing them to again play the videos if under certain agreements [most notably, that they distribute proper credit].

Dear Nintendo Legal people:

I'd like to know your opinion on Machinima. That is, when people record gameplay, what rights do they have?

Specifically, at speeddemosarchive.com (or SDA), we record our world-record times for any game with an end point, and try to maintain the website with that content exclusively.  It is a commercial site, with advertisements to cover the server costs, although profit is a foreign term.

This was all well and good, until a while ago when G4 showed several runs without notifying the runner (the one who planned, practised, and recorded the gameplay) or the people in charge of the site (who spend several hours timing and formatting the runs).  Although we notified them of the incursion and they stopped showing our runs, G4 is not the only one to gain from taking the runs without permission.

We were surprised then, when forum members asked friends/relatives of the legal persuasion about this, that we in fact may be stealing as well.  Does a person have a right to publish a run of a Nintendo game?  Does someone else have the right to take this without contacting those involved in its creation?  Any answers would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
-name deleted-

P.S. All the runs are done on purchased copies of the game and hardware.  Runs done an emulator are not acceptable at SDA.

Hey cookie, this is Radix. It's his forum here, he can do whaterver the hell he wants. If you are not happy, get the hell out of here and give yourself an internet kick in the ass.

Anyone here insulting, arguing radix is a total moron, Radix deserve all the respect the interweb can give for working for us for free specially while he have all those problems at home (I know because Radix is not the only one with problems).

If I was him, there would be a BAN festival right here.

Even if Radix didn't like what I posted right now, it's okay, I said what I had to say and that's it.

EDIT: Oh, and one last thing..

I hope you didn't actually send that. The last thing we need is to get sued because the wrong lawyer saw something like that.

And if you think we're "stealing", you're a moron, and you've probably been swallowing all the "sharing is bad!" propaganda. Stealing involves taking something from someone who is not giving it to you.

I'm sorry for being an ass with that hotshot comment, but troll see, troll do, I guess...

Meanwhile, I wasn't asking for a lawsuit with the email.  Contrary to what the experts at lawyers.com think, the industry is unanimously approving of machinema/speedruns/whatever in some cases sponsoring events or touraments like Bungie and Nintendo have, or Valve fixing recording problems, or even NOA giggling excitedly(Google Cache...may not work) when they realize they're talking to a celebrity.

What I really wanted to do what ask NOA about the G4's of the world and see if they cared.  (And stupidly trolling back at Radix ...sorry)
ouch!

No, the current topic is whether or not speedruns can be copyrighted.
Retired
Nintendo won't sue SDA - they actually watch the speed runs and use them to aid development.

Not sure about other companies.
