Hey we would all love to see speedruns on tv. My guess is it would probably be on G4 Tech TV if anything. So if anybody has connections or knows somebody who has connections, do you think it would be possible for them to play a speedrun from SDA? (I don’t have to mention the promotion this would entail) Just pitching an idea.

BTW did anyone know Wikipedia has an entry on Speedrun? The SDA is second on the external links (below archive.org no less)

Just do what I do:

Plug an s-video cable from your PC to your TV. No commercials or annoying hosts!

actually, just for getting the site some attention that'd be kind of neat. I'm sure there are people who watch g4 that would hit SDA if they knew about it.

whether or not we want them around is another thing, but free advertising is never a bad thing.
deet
is the s-video cable the yellow one on a scart?

Nobody watches G4 though.  The best place to get coverage would be ESPN.  They frickin do SPELLING BEES...and POKER...why not gaming?

They wouldn't show speedruns though. If they showed anything about videogames, it would be about the Madden Challenge or a FPS.

Cygnus is right. it'd be cool to get something on ESPN or some news channel, but it's just not gonna happen. the only way it could happen is if someone was running a sports game, which is obviously impossible given that they use clocks. a video game channel is probably as good as you can get, and it's better than nothing.

I wouldn't even know where to begin asking - I suppose someone could ask on the G4 forums, but who knows if anyone important is watching that stuff.

I don't see why you couldn't get on ESPN2.
I bet ESPN would feel like they're taking a big risk with with it. They might doubt anyone would watch it because nobody knows anything about speedruns. Its also not a direct competition between players.
I figured G4 would be likely to play them because they're all about video games now and THEY HELD THE WORLD'S FIRST VIDEO GAME BEAUTY PAGENT. Tell me they're not reaching for ideas.

Well if a petition signed by 10,000 people convinced FOX networking to bring back Family Guy...

Then I'm sure same can happen for speed running if we could get even a quater of that many signatures to G4 Executives.. =\
The man made of sticks
All we do is try to run video games fast.  We're not that interesting.
Last night G4 actually showed the Super Mario Bros. speed run but they showed an older one. The time for the one they showed was 5:11 I believe.

Meh, S-Video cable, then use my flashy Creative Audigy 2 ZS to hook up with my dolby 7.1 setup, I loved watching the Half Life (1) done quick video, every minute was so entertaining.

Putting a speed run on a tv show though.....no.....its like how theres commentators for major CS matches, it sounds dumb, and it is dumb  :-/

I thought it was the DVD sales that convinced Fox to resurrect the show?  I haven't seen any petition be successful yet.

I turned on the tv today and was channel surfing and saw this too! Unfortunatly, he was already at the final bowser castle

Keep in mind though that the speedrun is about 5 minutes. Most of the short games that were spedran (is that the right past tense) here would probably end up taking a slot for a tv show (30 minutes) and all the other speedruns just go up from there. 1 hour, 2 hours, some even 5! No, they are just too long Sad

"The news of Fox's cancellation in the third season was met with dismay by fans, and renewed efforts were made to convince Fox to resurrect the show. An online petition was launched, which garnered over 10,000 signatures within only a few weeks. The petition contained the following message, addressed to Gail Berman and Sandy Grushow, the President of Entertainment and Chairman of Fox at the time:

    To: FOX Broadcasting

Dear Ms. Gail Berman and Mr. Sandy Grushow,

We are avid watchers of FOX programming, especially the show "Family Guy". We have recently heard that FOX Broadcasting has cancelled this show. We are informing you of a boycott of FOX Broadcasting, FX, FOX Sports Channel, and all products shown on FOX Broadcasting, FX, and FOX Sports Channel. We are all willing to comply with the boycott and do whatever it takes to get our favorite FOX show ("Family Guy") back on the air.

We will not only be boycotting your stations, we will be boycotting every product shown on those stations. These products include, but are not limited to: Nyquil, Schick, Valvoline, Gold Bond, Subway Sandwiches, Buick Motor Vehicles, Alka-Seltzer, Monistat 7, Diflucan, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Heartguard, Frontline, any product on TimeLife.com, Ranger Bass Boats, The Xtractor, any product made by MGM, 1-800-COLLECT, Hunt's Manwich, any product made by Reeses', any product made by Walt Disney, and Gevalia coffee and coffee makers.

As you can see, we are taking this cancellation very seriously. We will contact our local newspapers, and television stations; and with that we will gain more people in our "quest" to get "Family Guy" back on television.

    Sincerely,

    The Undersigned [1]

The petition gained over 100,000 signatures, but this along with mass e-mailing and letter writing to Fox executives and organized street protests failed to save Family Guy. Later efforts to get other networks, particularly UPN, to buy Family Guy also failed.

In 2003, reruns of the series found a permanent home at Cartoon Network and its late-night Adult Swim block, where, as of 2005, it continues to play. According to a Cartoon Network press release, "FAMILY GUY ranks #1 in its time period on cable among Adults and Men 18–34 and Adults and Men 18–24, and also beats both The Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in head-to-head competition among Men 18–34 and Men 18–24." (This was only an occasional ratings outcome[2].)

The series found further success on the DVD market. Divided into two volumes, Family Guy sold 2.2 million DVD units in the first year[3], reportedly surpassing every other TV-based DVD released in 2003, including Sex and the City and Friends compilations. The significant Cartoon Network ratings, combined with the unprecedented DVD sales, led to widespread rumors that Fox was in talks to revive the series."

I would expect that TV stations wouldn't want anything more than a few minutes because they'd think people would get bored. 30 minutes would be the absolute max.

GTA:SA, sucks for you!
Oh cool, so they did show a run.
Yeah, longer speedruns wouldn’t make the cut for sure. But they could at least show runs of newer games, because all people have heard about is mario bros. and mario 3. How about an hour of something like the half life run, or an hour and a half to the mario 64 70 stars run (1.01 of speedrun, 29 minutes of commercials, ouch). G4 could replace their Anime Unleashed with it, because they show the worst anime shows ever (unlike adult swim, go Samurai Champloo! ... and Family Guy!). Even if it isn’t very likely, still cool to think about.
Ben Goldberg
Remember, if runs were to be shown on TV, they would have to have the right resolution for it.

I think you'd need something under an hour - zelda 1, super metroid any% maybe, something like that. it's obviously gotta be something that's well-known, cause they aren't showing arc the lad speedruns.
Tiberian Dawn Modder
Even 1 hour is too much, the audience will get bored because there arent many people enough willing to sit through a speedrun that long, I've seen the zelda : oot one before, watched it from the start to the end in one sitting, now tell me, how many people will actually sit down and watch something like that?

(Now i need to re-download the zelda oot run...stupid dialup)
^ ya, the zelda OoT run is a great run, but people who channel surf are most likely not going to simply sit down and waste 5 hours of the day watching a speedrun unless they are absolutly bored to death

For christsakes, it takes a good 3 hours to show 2 hour movies on tv, and we all know how annoying it is with commercials!

That's another thing too, there'd be commercials :/ But it'd be interesting to see where they make the cuts!
trust the fungus
segmented runs would be great for that, metroid in particular. I don't know what other games have nice and neat 10 minute segments, but those would be great too.
Ben Goldberg
They could have it like a TV show with episodes. You watch half an hour every day of a run, and you tune back in the next day for the next half hour. I know it has it's flaws in it, like how to cut up a run into half an hour segments.

I'm sure G4 would show the 1:04 Metroid Prime run. With commercials, you boost it out to an hour and a half. Not primetime, but maybe 4 in the morning?
