First thing you should do is use your alias/name as your character name if possible. I do that on all my runs (though if your name doesn't show up in-game, they can cut it out at the start).
TSA, I imagine they'd be too busy showing the gameplay in these runs and wouldn't stop at cutscenes and dialog boxes. The only way you'd see this, is if you did a speed run on an RPG or some other game that CONSTANTLY showed the user's name entirely in gameplay and such. Games like platformers, action adventure games and first person shooters (you know, the stuff they're likely to show due to the speed and look of gameplay and such) rarely do that in the first place, let alone name your character.
There's not really any way you can brand your run that any hackeyed editting can work around, unless you brand every frame with your name much like this video from stuckgamer. If they do actually go ahead and make a concious effort to edit that out, then you can REALLY complain. ^^;
Since the games being used are the intellectual properties of specific Publishing companies (Konami for Castlevania for example), then all the speed runners are doing is playing that game(s)--there is no plagiarism.
Speed runs are derivative works and the intellectual property belongs to the publisher, and no one else.
Cinematech never took credit for the speed runs (though it could be argued that not giving credit is akin to ownership.) Many viewers were interested in seeing speed runs and they requested them quite often. When they aired, the Cinematech team recieved a lot of positive feedback. Whenever anyone asked where a specific run originated, we would always direct them to the appropriate speed run website. Interest was created, and positive attention was brought to speed running and the community.
From this point forward though, we will no longer air any speed runs.
Those little bastards. The idiots literally avoided the question, and locked the thread.
They said the wont air speedruns, and made up some lame excuse that since the game is owned by Konami (for example) they are not plagarising our run.
They completely ignore my question, and go ahead and lock the whole thread.
Should I send the mod a PM? Asking him to answer my question?
I actually want them to air speedruns IFF (if and only if) they give SDA and the runner credit. It does generate publicity.
Oh yeah, in that "how did you get introduced to this site" did anyone mention G4TV?
I'm getting even more pissed off now.
Ok, here's the PM I'm going to send to the mod who locked the thread:
Quote:
Regarding the speed-run thread titled "Speed run credits in episodes"
I see you locked the topic, and just avoided the issue. I would like for you to answer my question:
[Q]And what about the episodes where the runners weren't credited? Can you maybe have a note in one of your newer episodes that you guys forgot to give us credit? It's the least you can do for us.[/Q]
As you have seemed to avoid it. We never told you to stop airing speedruns, but to just credit the maker, and the site that hosts them. Is that too much trouble to ask? Or is it too much "work" to credit someone whenever you want to air a speedrun? You obviously have the runner and site at hand based on this quote:
[Q]When they aired, the Cinematech team recieved a lot of positive feedback. Whenever anyone asked where a specific run originated, we would always direct them to the appropriate speed run website. Interest was created, and positive attention was brought to speed running and the community.[/Q]
So why not take 2 seconds to recite that.
We want you to air speedruns, if you credit the maker and site. Don't take the childish way out by avoiding the issue, please. The least you can do is provide some closure. Right now you haven't cleared up anything.
Made a new thread. Does anyone watch this channel? I only ever saw one show, where they made counter-strike into a game show type thing with sports-type commentary. It was really terrible. No wonder they have to steal content.
If he responds to your PM, I bet you it will say this:
Quote:
Speed runs cannot be copyrited since they are derivative works from the intellectual property of the publishers of those games. We will not air anymore speed runs.
Personally it doesn't make any sense at all...*arg*
On a random note: I guess some nice troll individual attempted to send me this: W32.Sober.X@mm is a mass-mailing worm that uses its own SMTP engine to spread and lowers security settings. It sends itself as an email attachment to addresses gathered from the compromised computer. The email may be in either English or German. Perhaps this should be our new pic for whenever we see trolls? Assuming that he doesn't go on his word.
If you read the newest posts it sounds like they sucked it up and at least will lead whoever to sda.
The whole thing about copyright and crap is bunk. We all know that a person can copyright a picture of a car...even though someone else owns the car. I almost know that there will be some court thing about this in '06.
If he responds to your PM, I bet you it will say this:
I wouldn't be surprised. I also have a suspicion that he's been reading our forums (not to hard to track us down, right?).
He hasn't responded yet, and no doubt he's been reading our forums, shitting in his pants.
We've put him in an awkward position. All I wanted was a yes or no answer to my question. I won't give a flying fuck if he says no to it if he explains himself (like money costs, or the shows have already been made). I'll leave the cursing to Radix for now (I'm tuckered out).
He's acting like a baby, and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it.
I'm thinking of making a post that says:
"Look, if you keep on locking all the Speedrun posts, how can we have an intelligent discussion about it. I bet you are going to lock this post too. Just because you think a topic is over, doesn't mean we have more to say. And we'll keep on making new topics if we have something more to say. So please, answer my question from the previous thread. I've sent you a PM about it too. If you don't have an answer, please say something. Don't leave things unanswered."
Maybe I should report him for abusing his mod powers? Although he hasn't done "too" much, except avoid numerous question directed at him, and locked a bunch of topics that he has no answer to.
Honestly, these type of pompous, spoiled idiots annoy me to no end. Yes, even more than Sandbag, or ProveYourself...
they'll stop airing speedruns? that's pretty sad. they should have responded on the issue before it got so heated. if they simply apologized and gave credit in the future, things would be better. people can be surprisingly forgiving.
Speed runs cannot be copyrited since they are derivative works from the intellectual property of the publishers of those games. We will not air anymore speed runs.
So if a painter paints a house that's not his, the painting cannot be copyrighted because the house does not belong to the artist?
Seriously, this is really pointless. These people don't know what the hell they are talking about.

Pride.
We gave them plenty of chances. Hell, we are still giving them a chance. They just want to be fuckfaces about it, and not compromise.
Ok, hold up. Lets look at some perspectives. I think I see a failure to communicate. We came in there with the expectation that it would take an army of runners to change the minds of G4 people. While they, on the other hand, seemed to be more willing to give credit after only a few of us posted. Changing previous episodes wasn't discussed beforehand, so when we brought it up, it probably seemed like we were some unruly mob trying to force our endless demands (which no show producer has been inclined to give in to) and it seems he freaked and the only course of action to make us happy was to say "we won't air them". I think both sides (us and them) have been a bit hasty. We were hasty in bringing up past episodes after he said he would credit us, and they were hasty in dropping speedruns (which doesn't seem reasonable, because if the runs bring in money to the show, why would any rational producer drop it because of a small group such as ourselves?). "Can't be copyrighted" sounds like a defense mechanism, not an opinion.

While that may be true, I think they are in a deep pile of shit, once they found out that we were "on to them" and want to get rid of the issue ASAP. Thus the "derivitave of published games" exuse.
I have to agree with Soteos. Things went well but then it just became one big misunderstanding. The guy's not an asshole. He did make a sticky about speedruns and then even complimented the runners. We just need to ask instead of demand.
Comprimise is better attained through understanding, not force.

I hadn't seen the sticky beforehand. But I bet he only put it up because he was obilged to. It was put up after the second topic was locked. I'll just wait and see what happens. I'm kind of pissed off that he hasn't replied to my PM, though.
