I know of racing games like Nitronic Rush, SSX3/Tricky, Mario Kart, and F-Zero being "more friendly" towards speedrunning. But are there more traditional racing games like Forza, Gran Turismo, or GRID that people run? I use the term "more friendly" very loosely. I mean it in the sense that some of the games mentioned have a noticeably different way of playing when you speedrun it as opposed to casual play. Any game can be speedran, but I like it when the strategy to do so is very unique compared to it's intended method of completion. I feel like the traditional racing game lacks this unique way to speedrun through it. So here's to hoping I'm full of shit and there actually being some really cool racing game speedruns Smiley
Thread title:
There is a Gran Turismo 5 run here: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/gran_turismo_5_career_mode_speedrun_in_1_hour.html

Using the search engine, some people seemingly considered running GT or Forza. Same with some Need for Speed games (https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/need_for_speed_speed_runs.html), but it didn't result in much thread activity.
A lot of racing games abuse checkpoint placement. An extreme example of this is Lego Racers, where you just drive back and forth over a small portion of the track to win.

Whenever I think about a racing game to speed run, I ask myself what qualifies for a start and end time. Especially, if there's a story line involved.

For Sonic Riders, which I've thought about speed running, I could consider the story mode to be the speed running portion of the game.

Racing games feel like games that are fundementally designed for time attacks. It doesn't necesarily have to involve abuse or exploit, sometimes its about getting the right vehicle and the best approach to turn ad execution

Id love to see more racing games be run/time attacked personally

Then unfortunately we're not on the same page :/. I'm just trying to find racing games that have an interesting way to complete quickly through its story or career modes (defying the fundamental design if you will). Something unexpected that would make you think "I would never think completing objectives/races in that order would make it faster to beat". I feel like individual track time trials would be too expected of a racing game for speedruns. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Waiting hurts my soul...
I'd enjoy seeing more racing games. I wonder what WMJ is working on currently.

Last I heard he was working on Wip3out PS1, one of The most hardcore games out there.

I remember playing Rage Racer on PS1 not very long compared to other racing games. I'd love to give it a try but unfortunately mine is damaged. I can't find a hard copy and there is no digital copy on PSN Sad
